Book Environmental and Water Quality Operational Studies Application of a Two Dimensional Model of Hydrodynamics and Water Quality CE QUAL W2 to DeGray Lake Arkansas

Download or read book Environmental and Water Quality Operational Studies Application of a Two Dimensional Model of Hydrodynamics and Water Quality CE QUAL W2 to DeGray Lake Arkansas written by James L. Martin and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the application of a two-dimensional, laterally averaged, hydrodynamic and water quality model (CE-QUAL-W2) to DeGray Lake, Arkansas. The model successfully predicted spatial and temporal variations in dissolved oxygen concentrations and other water quality variables over the stratification cycle. The application and testing of the model are described. Keywords: Reservoir stratification; Lake hydrodynamics; Computer programs; Water quality.

Book Application of a Two dimensional Model of Hydrodynamics and Water Quality CE QUAL W2 to Cordell Hull Reservoir Tennessee

Download or read book Application of a Two dimensional Model of Hydrodynamics and Water Quality CE QUAL W2 to Cordell Hull Reservoir Tennessee written by Stacy E. Howington and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although not problematic within this reservoir, unacceptably low dissolved oxygen concentrations farther downstream in the system of reservoirs in the Cumberland River Basin have caused concern. This model study was undertaken to evaluate the water quality (specifically temperature and dissolved oxygen) impacts of operational changes at individual reservoir outlet structures. The study was also designed to reveal the interactions between hydrodynamics and stratification within the reservoir. Unstable stratification is thought to be responsible for additional problems in the reservoir: absence of an anticipated substantial fishery and a less than desirable amount of contact recreation. The concept of installing submerged weirs at the mouths of two of the reservoir's embayments within an established recreational site was proposed to help alleviate these 2 problems. As Cordell Hull Lock and Dam operates as a run-of-the-river navigation project on the main-stem Cumberland River, no significant operational changes at this site are possible. The reservoir is characterized by high flows, intermittent moderate to weak thermal stratification, and a relatively shallow pool. These factors combine, as was demonstrated by the model testing results, to preclude significant control over the release quality characteristics. However, the advective nature of the reservoir presents an advantage. Any changes to the quality of incoming water of Cordell Hull Reservoir will be propagated downstream, largely intact. (EDC).

Book Hydrodynamics and Transport for Water Quality Modeling

Download or read book Hydrodynamics and Transport for Water Quality Modeling written by James L. Martin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 820 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrodynamics and Transport for Water Quality Modeling presents a complete overview of current methods used to describe or predict transport in aquatic systems, with special emphasis on water quality modeling. The book features detailed descriptions of each method, supported by sample applications and case studies drawn from the authors' years of experience in the field. Each chapter examines a variety of modeling approaches, from simple to complex. This unique text/reference offers a wealth of information previously unavailable from a single source. The book begins with an overview of basic principles, and an introduction to the measurement and analysis of flow. The following section focuses on rivers and streams, including model complexity and data requirements, methods for estimating mixing, hydrologic routing methods, and unsteady flow modeling. The third section considers lakes and reservoirs, and discusses stratification and temperature modeling, mixing methods, reservoir routing and water balances, and dynamic modeling using one-, two-, and three-dimensional models. The book concludes with a section on estuaries, containing topics such as origins and classification, tides, mixing methods, tidally averaged estuary models, and dynamic modeling. Over 250 figures support the text. This is a valuable guide for students and practicing modelers who do not have extensive backgrounds in fluid dynamics.

Book CE QUAL W2 A Numerical Two Dimensional Laterally Averaged Model of Hydrodynamics and Water Quality User s Manual

Download or read book CE QUAL W2 A Numerical Two Dimensional Laterally Averaged Model of Hydrodynamics and Water Quality User s Manual written by ARMY ENGINEER WATERWAYS EXPERIMENT STATION VICKSBURG MS ENVIRONMENTAL LAB. and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual describes the two-dimensional, laterally averaged hydrodynamic and water quality model CE-QUAL-W2 and provides guidance in its use. The model was developed primarily for use in reservoirs but has applicability to lakes, rivers, and estuaries. The manual is organized into four major parts with several appendixes. In Part I, CE-QUAL-W2 is introduced to the reader by summarizing its major usages, attributes, and historical development. Part II addresses model capabilities, assumptions, and limitations and supplies the basic information required to use the model. Part III outlines in detail the structure of CE-QUAL-W2, including the basic model equations and solution procedures. Part IV provides additional details of data assembly, presents literature values of various coefficients and constants, and discusses how to calibrate the model and interpret output. The appendixes include: Appendix A, a description of various programming aspects; Appendix B, a glossary of variables and coefficients used in CE-QUAL-W2; and Appendix C, a description of the statistical and graphics routines.

Book Alternatives in Regulated River Management

Download or read book Alternatives in Regulated River Management written by James A. Gore and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers and managers of regulated river systems will find this volume useful in acquiring information for deciding an integrated management plan for regulated river operations. Rather than the ecological theory of impacts of flow regulation, emphasis has been placed on methods to predict water quality and habitat alterations, as well as techniques to mitigate impacts from various operational scenarios. Although most chapters refer to impacts of riverine impoundments, these alternatives apply to any regulated situation in which changes in water quality or flow pattern occur. The predictive modeling techniques are explained primarily from a theoretical background. However, extensive bibliographies can guide the uninitiated to specific texts and software. Where controversial techniques have been presented, alternate methods are also described. Major topic areas include water quality problems, channel modification and management, ecological modeling and management, as well as a section on perspectives for ecological management and special problems in developing nations.
