Book Apple Growing Classic Reprint

Download or read book Apple Growing Classic Reprint written by Massachusetts State Board o Agriculture and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apple Growing Apple growing in Massachusetts has received a great stimulus within the past five years, largely due to a sudden realization that good apples could be grown here as well as in other parts of the country, and also to the relatively high prices of western apples. Early in the history of Massachusetts, and up to the time of the civil war, apple growing was considered very profitable, but soon after that period insect and fungous pests made their appearance in such numbers that many orchards were either destroyed or allowed to run out. Apple growing thus became an adjunct to general farm ing, and has so remained until the stimulus of western competition began to make itself felt. Apples Should be grown in our State in sufficient quantities to at least supply our own demand, for certainly no spot on this earth was ever more favored for growing this fruit. Soils and climatic conditions are of the best; markets are near and good; and success is assured, provided the grower will exert a reasonable effort. There have been many new orchards planted in the last few years, and many old trees have been renovated and are now bearing good fruit. The young orchards are now supplying some of the very highest quality apples in our markets. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The American Apple Orchard

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Apple Orchard: A Sketch of the Practice of Apple, Growing in North America at the Beginning of the Twentieth Century The apple is the most widely grown of tree fruits; and though it cannot cover quite so great a range of latitude as the plum, it is, after all, more generally known and prized than any other fruit of any longitude or zone. Nevertheless the extreme northern and southern agricultural regions of our continent are practically outside the apple country. Even within the apple country there are great inequalities of distribution. Certain regions are not well adapted to apple culture, while in others this fruit has become the basis of a great industry. Book Apple Growing in California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Apple Growing in California Classic Reprint written by Frank Wisdom Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apple Growing in California With the large crop of 1926 in practically all sections, prices received for California apples were extremely low. However, the eight-year averages of total value, when compared with comparable figures of other deciduous fruits during the same period, show the value of California's apple crop to have been approximately three times that of either cherries or shipping plums, three times the almond crop, about one million and a half dollars in excess of the pear crop, and almost as great as that of apricot crop. In 1920 and 1921 rather extensive new plantings were made in Sonoma, Butte, San Bernardino, Kern, and Inyo counties. During the past five years new plantings have not been so extensive except in Sonoma and Tuolumne counties. The total number of non-bearing trees for the state now shows a slight decline, while the bearing acreage shows a gradual and consistent increase. With the exception of 1923, a heavy crop year, production has been relatively uniform. Yields on the Whole are dependable, not being so seriously affected by frosts and drought as are the orchards of the eastern states. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apples of New York, Vol. 1 General. - I have the honor to transmit herewith Part II of the Annual Report of the New York Agricultural Experiment Station for 1903, to be known as "The Apples of New York." The period of the collection of the data which from the subject-matter of this publication is coincident with the life of the Station, having been begun over twenty years ago by the late Professor Emmet S. Goff, who was the Station's first horticulturist. In 1891 this work passed into the hands of Professor Spencer A. Beach, who is now, fortunately, charged with the presentation to the public of the results of this long-continued and costly effort. In the collection and organization of the information contained in this volume, Professor Beach has had the valued assistance of Professors Wendell Paddock, Charles P. Close, Heinrich Hasselbring and Vinton A. Clark, who have been associated with him in the horticultural department of the Station. Professor Nathaniel O Booth and Mr. Orrin M. Taylor have not only assisted in the collection of original data, but they have rendered efficient service in the immediate preparation of the text. The publication of this volume, which is confined to the writer varieties of apples, to be followed by a second volume covering the early and fall varieties, is made possible by the generous action of the New York legislature of 1904, and should be regarded as an occasion of justifiable pride on the part of the state, the Station management and the individuals chiefly concerned in the work on its professional side. There is every reason to believe that these two volumes will take their place as part of the standard literature of pomology, and will be useful and stimulating to one of the most important industries of the state. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apple-Tree: The Open Country Books No; 1 The wind is snapping in the bamboos, knocking together the resonant canes and weaving the myriad flexile wreaths above them. The palm heads rustle with a brisk crinkling music. Great ferns stand in the edge of the forest, and giant arums cling their arms about the trunks of trees and rear their dim jacks-in-the-pulpit far in the branches; and in the greater distance I know that green parrots are flying in twos from tree to tree. The plant forms are strange and various, making mosaic of contrasting range of leaf-size and leaf-shape, palm and grass and fern, epiphyte and liana and clumpy mistletoe, of grace and clumsiness and even misproportion, a tall thick landscape all mingled into a symmetry of disorder that charms the attention and fascinates the eye. It is a soft and delicious air wherein I sit. A torrid drowse is in the receding landscape. The people move leisurely, as befits the world where there is no preparation for frost and no urgent need of laborious apparel. There are tardy bullock-carts, unconscious donkeys, and men pushing vehicles. There are odd products and unaccustomed cakes and cookies on little stands by the roadside, where the turbaned vendor sits on the ground unconcernedly. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apple Culturist The apple that vies with the peach and the grape. - edwards. From early boyhood the writer of this little treatise has been practically engaged, more or less every year, in the propagation of apple-trees and the management of orchards. As there is no little manual on Apple Orchards in all our agricultural and pomolog ical literature which a beginner may study as a reliable guide in every branch of apple culture, and as the author in early life was obliged to advance from one step to another, in the rearing and management of apple-trees, by the slow and often uncertain way of determining the better practices by experiments, he feels war ranted in preparing a small volume, in which are embodied the successful results of the experience of more than forty years. Most of the works on pomology are either too voluminous and expensive to meet all the requirements of men who need a cheap book containing brief directions for beginners, or the writers have assumed that their readers already possess a pretty correct under standing of that branch of pomology which treats of the correct mode of propagating apple-trees, and the most satisfactory manner of managing apple orchards in order to produce profitable crops of fruit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apple: A Practical Treatise Dealing With the Latest Modern Practices of Apple Culture Much has been published on apple-growing. Growers and others have written many books dealing with the subject; experiment stations have carried on various kinds of investigations to deter mine conclusively the most efficient methods in all the subdivisions of the culture of this king of fruits bulletins have been issued in large numbers, until fruit growers are overwhelmed with the mass of information that has been collected about apples. After a careful perusal of all the available writings on apple growing, the author of this book became deeply convinced of the need of a single volume that would present in a logical manner the most essential of the recent practical ideas and methods. Such a book he has endeavored to prepare. While he has drawn on his own experience in the subject, he has also culled largely from the writings of others, and particularly from the experimental evidence they have offered. In presenting this work the author hopes that the investigator will gain easier access to much that will aid him in a study of the question; that the farmer or fruit specialist will find just the up to-date information and directions needed; that the amateur will feel confidence in basing his cultural requirements on the matter herein contained and, particularly, that the student may find here the subject matter and the arrangement required for a systematic course in apple-growing. The field covered has been made broad enough to include the practices of a large number of the typical apple-producing regions of North America. In so highly specialized an industry as this, a somewhat comprehensive treatment is felt to be decidedly im portant. Otherwise the special practices followed in limited areas are likely to be mistaken for rules of general application. Book How to Establish and Maintain an Apple Orchard Classic Reprint

Download or read book How to Establish and Maintain an Apple Orchard Classic Reprint written by George T. Powell and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Establish and Maintain an Apple Orchard The Apple is the great standard fruit and is in universal demand. It is no longer a luxury, but like bread, has become a necessity throughout the months in which it may now be readily obtained. It is not only beautiful in appearance and in its many food-forms luscious in taste, but it contributes much to the tone and health of the body. There is no other fruit at the present time that commands such widespread interest, and that is being so extensively planted. While the apple will grow throughout a large territory and in a wide diversity of soils and under differing climatic conditions, good and high-flavored fruit may be produced only in soils and at elevations that are well adapted to its requirements. In establishing an orchard that is to be productive (as it should be), for more than a century, the elevation should be in a range of from 400 feet to 2,000 feet above sea level. The land should be rolling or sloping in character, while the soil should be a strong deep loam of limestone formation. The elevation is important, for upon this is dependent the health and longevity of the trees. They thrive best in a pure atmosphere where there is always a good air circulation and good soil drainage. On high and sloping land, good natural water-drainage is assured. This is as essential to trees as is pure air. On elevated sites, furthermore, there is less danger from late spring frosts, for when the temperature runs low, cold air moves down to lower levels, just as water flows from springs, to brooks and streams below, which in turn run on to still lower levels. A difference of fifty feet greater elevation will often save blossoms from destruction by frosts. Good water-drainage is very important. The roots of trees must have good air about them in the soil the same as do their bodies above the ground. Book Handling Apples From Tree to Table Classic Reprint

Download or read book Handling Apples From Tree to Table Classic Reprint written by D. F. Fisher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handling Apples From Tree to Table The blush, or red color, of an apple is not a reliable index of maturity. The ground color (underlying green or yellow), however, can be used as an index. The quality of a'red apple can be judged ordinarily by the proportion of red to green; the 'more red, the better the eating quality. As most varieties of apples become mature the ground color changes from a green very much like that of the leaves to a lighter shade and eventually to yellowish. The time to pick most varieties is when the first'signs of yellowing appear This is not always true with some varieties - Grimes Golden, J onathan, and Yellow Newtown, for example - when grown under certain conditions. The red sp orts of some varieties usually become fully red before they are mature, with no underlying ground color left for observation. As a result, they have frequently been picked too soon and have suffered in popular esteem because they were judged to have poorer quality than the parent variety. Although ground color cannot be used as an index of maturity for red bud sports, the ground color of the parent varieties growing in the same Vicinity can be so used, as their seasons of maturity are ordinarily about the same.
