Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Thugs or Phansigars of India: Comprising a History of the Rise and Progress of That Extraordinary Fraternity of Assassin's From this repository of undigested materials, the compiler of the volume now offered to the public, has endeavoured to form a clear and suc cinct account of the Thugs, their peculiar super stitions, their methods of proceeding in robbing and murdering travellers, and the operations of the British government in India for the extirpation of this singular and unparalled system of assassination and plunder. To this he has added an Appendix, containing the vocabulary of their language, the disclosures made to Captain Sleeman by Thug informers, and a specimen of the trials of some of the criminals; which serves to exhibit the careful and impartial system pursued by the British autho rities in bringing these atrocious criminals to jusiicc. Book A Voyage to Modernism

Download or read book A Voyage to Modernism written by Sir Sayyid Aḥmad K̲h̲ān̲ and published by Primus Books. This book was released on 2011 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of Muslim knowledge concerning the West through travel accounts makes for fascinating reading. The eighteenth-century encounters of Munshi Ihtisamuddin and Mirza Abu Taleb Khan, embedded in their travelogues, however, seem very distant and less urgent. With Syed Ahmed, however, begins an entirely new phase with his interplay between Muslims and the West, on the one hand, and between Islam and Christianity, on the other. Even though his portrait of England is sometimes facile, his account of his travels opens the door to new questions, particularly because this was the period when the relations between Europeans and Indians were at the centre of many debates. Consequently, passages in the Musafiran-i Landan introducing 'Europe' and 'England' are historically important enough to merit attention, since they are not used merely as fulsome descriptions of Western society's advances, but also contain the germ of the justification for an Anglo-Muslim rapprochement. This makes the Musafiran-i Landan an important source for the construction of the history of an era. Its English translation, the first ever to be undertaken in full, makes it accessible to those who have no knowledge of Urdu. Although several accounts of 'India and West' are available, A Voyage to Modernism is of special significance. Set apart from his later endeavours like the Tahzibul Akhlaq and Asar-al Sanadid, it is the Syed's impressions caught in A Voyage to Modernism that mattered to all those who knew anything about his standing in public life and his stature as an enlightened reformer in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. This eminently readable translation is enriched by editorial interventions by translators and editors of the work, and supported by rare archival photographs

Book excerpt: This book is for those readers who want to know the truth about Oudh and the past ofNawabi Lucknow. In the eyes of East India Company, the Nawab Wazirs, Kings andBegums of Lucknow were much maligned persons in the history of Oudh. Of all thepersons the last deposed King Wajid Ali Shah was charged with infamy. Not many Indiansare aware that interested parties to dethrone him, spread canards judiciously. Few of theyounger generation of India care to remember the heroic effort of Begum Hazrat Mahalwho led from the front and fought to liberate the country from the British. She refused toaccept not once but many times, offers of security and due privileges from the East IndiaCompany. She wanted to live with independence, dignity and honor and not on crumbsthrown by a foreign power. She died unsung in Kathmandu, Nepal. Her equally brave sonBirjis Qadr spent his precious childhood and youth in fighting against the British and thendied under mysterious circumstances when he returned to Calcutta. Some new found factsabout Birjis Qadr and his descendants are included. Some special photos feature in thebook.
