Book Competitive Strategy and Business Performance A Case in the German Clothing Industry

This book was released on 2015-06-03 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 1999 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 1,0, Berlin School of Economics, course: Competitive Strategy and Business Perfomance, language: English, abstract: The clothing market environment is characterised by strong competition, low demand and declining margins. As prices deflate, many manufacturers are producing premium products. The present paper analyses the German clothing company JIL SANDER AG, which is then compared to BOSS AG and ESCADA AG. Despite their different size they all pursue a similar strategy to survive in a highly competitive surrounding: they built up a strong brand, diversify in other lifestyle segments and distribute their products through own mono-brand shops as well as through franchise partners. The main task is to assess the performance of a company like Jil Sander in pursuing this strategy, especially considering its size constraints. This is done by qualitative as well as quantitative analysis in view of a environmental analysis, a financial analysis and a scenario analysis Implementing this strategy, it should be kept in mind that it means less control over franchise partners and factories. The push is on to answer the 'management question' by strengthening the second management level, as a tight control over sales channels will not be possible by the person Jil Sander itself.

Book excerpt: Broken Threads tells the story of the destruction of the Jewish fashion industry under the Nazis.Jewish designers were very prominent in the fashion industry of 1930s Germany and Austria. The emergence of Konfektion, or ready-to-wear, and the development of the modern department store, with its innovative merchandising and lavish interior design, only emphasized this prominence. The Nazis came to see German high fashion as too heavily influenced by Jewish designers, manufacturers and merchandisers. These groups were targeted with a campaign of propaganda, boycotts, humiliation and Aryanization.Broken Threads chronicles this moment of cultural loss, detailing the rise of Jewish design and its destruction at the hands of the Nazis. Superbly illustrated with photographs and fashion plates from the collection of Claus Jahnke, Broken Threads explores this little-known part of fashion and of Nazi history.

Book The Clothes on Our Backs

Download or read book The Clothes on Our Backs written by Anna Nyburg and published by Vallentine Mitchell. This book was released on 2021-10-20 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jews had long been active in the clothing trade in Europe, developing new production and retail methods and excelling as designers. However, in the UK clothes production was mostly conservative and design was not a concept. What happened to these Jews in the clothing industry after the Nazis came to power in 1933, bent on ridding Germany of Jews? Many found asylum in Britain, where soon the refugee owners of Kangol and other firms were employing thousands of British workers at a time of dreadfully high unemployment. And when war broke out, it was Kangol who made the berets for the British army and other forces. British companies started to recognise what the refugees could offer: Pringle of Scotland for one could see the benefits of hiring an Austrian refugee designer, their first. It was he who thought up the twinset which became a huge commercial success. The refugees brought new technology, new display methods, a different attitude to export and much more. It was no wonder then that by the end of the war the refugee clothiers were recognised as having made a disproportionate contribution to the economy Just one who was honoured was Miki Sekers, who was made an MBE in 1955 for services to the fashion industry. Additionally, to show their gratitude to the land that had saved their lives and given them hope, several became major patrons to the British arts scene. Harry Djanogly, supplier of clothing to M &S and a major donor to medical and educational projects also, was knighted for his services to philanthropy in 1993. Here Anna Nyburg tells their stories.
