These true stories center around the author's experiences growing up on a ranch and raising and training her horses. Their goal is to allow the reader to experience ranch life in western America. These non-fiction books are enjoyed by readers from two to eighty-two. Along with being high interest/low vocab, they are ESL books. The first three books, 'Chick-The Beginning', 'Chick-The Saddle Horse', and 'Chick-The Mom' center around the matriarch in this line of horses. The rest of the titles in this series (13 so far) go into Chick's offspring and friends. The book 'Appaloosa-The State Horse' centers around some of Chick's friends of a different breed, the Appaloosa. This book talks about seven different beautiful, wise, and talented appaloosa horses that have many interesting stories to tell. The first chapter of the book talks about how the appaloosa breed began. These books have had many very positive reviews from the top reviewers (students, teachers, librarians, adults, and elderly). The author-written AR tests are free. Rennaissance has tested the books for their reading level, 3.5 - 4.2. 'Appaloosa-The State Horse' was tested at 3.9. Book excerpt: Frosty is an Appaloosa colt who undergoes a life changing event the summer he turns two that triggers a strange out of body experience. Is he only having bad dreams or is his strange haunting a result of the collective memories of Appaloosas from a long ago past? Follow Frosty through the twilight between space and time where you will meet the Nightstalker. Author web site: http: //talesbyjackie.com Early Reviews "This book starts as an interesting tale, and moves to a very competent historical review of the late 19th century in our country. Little known facts from history, and from modern geography are combined to make this book quite compelling. Teenagers will be introduced to a factual history of our west, and adults will have their eyes opened by this author. It is recommended that everyone read this book because it is a very good adventure story, and it corrects many of the inaccuracies that we have learned about our history. Definitely, one book that needs to be read." - Reynold Bowen "In Frosty and the Nightstalker the reader will definitely be taking a journey through space and time. One doesn't have to be a horse lover to get pleasure out of its story. The book will give enjoyment to all who reads its tale. Personally, I could visualize this book being housed on every school shelf - to be read during scheduled "story time" periods. The structure is well-written, and does put one in the moment. A great job for both the Author, and the Illustrator." - Nina N. for The Book Reviewers Club

Book excerpt: Crystal is fascinated by all the horses near her Granmama's. They belong to Gramama's neighbour, who lives across the creek. Crystal's favourite horse is the Appaloosa—and she pays special attention to her, too. She would love to ride the Appaloosa, but Gramama says, "We do not ride other people's horses. Unless they offer." One Saturday when they reach the horses, they can't find the Appaloosa—until Crystal spots the horse, caught up in the barbed wire at the far corner of the field. While her grandmother wades across the river to get the owner, Crystal puts aside her own fear and softly pets the Appy so it won't be frightened. Gramama and the horse woman return to free the Appy, and Crystal's kindness is rewarded in a way she never expected. Thelma Sharp's poetic tale of a young girl's love for a horse will resonate with all children who have similar yearnings, and award—winning illustrator Georgia Graham brings to life the majesty of rural landscapes with her pastel and pencil illustrations.

Frontier historian Ken Mather is known for his fascinating, in-depth profiles of the men and women who established a distinctive ranching culture in Western Canada over a hundred years ago. Now, in this concise collection of stories—based on Mather’s column in the Vernon Morning Star—readers will meet even more colourful characters, gain insightful tidbits on cowboy culture, and read about little-known cattle drives that stagger the imagination. Ranch Tales highlights the achievements, hardships, and exploits of Newman “King of the Range” Squires, “lady rancher” Elizabeth Greenbow, cow boss Joe Coutlee, the gold-seeking Jeffries brothers who came all the way from Alabama, and many more. This delightful book is a perfect companion to Mather’s other ranching histories and will appeal to anyone interested in the early days of the western frontier.
