Download or read book Lyric Powers written by Robert von Hallberg and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-05-15 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authority of poetry varies from one period to another, from one culture to another. For Robert von Hallberg, the authority of lyric poetry has three sources: religious affirmation, the social institutions of those who speak the idioms from which particular poems are made, and the extraordinary cognition generated by the formal and musical resources of poems. Lyric Powers helps students, poets, and general readers to recognize the pleasures and understand the ambitions of lyric poetry. To explain why a reader might prefer one kind of poem to another, von Hallberg analyzes—beyond the political and intellectual significance of poems—the musicality of both lyric poetry and popular song, including that of Tin Pan Alley and doo-wop. He shows that poets have distinctive intellectual resources—not just rhetorical resources—for examining their subjects, and that the power of poetic language to generalize, not particularize, is what justly deserves a critic’s attention. The first book in more than a decade from this respected critic, Lyric Powers will be celebrated as a genuine event by readers of poetry and literary criticism.

Book John Lennon Yoko Ono and the Year Canada Was Cool

Download or read book John Lennon Yoko Ono and the Year Canada Was Cool written by Greg Marquis and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Lennon was the world's biggest rock star in the late Sixties. With his new wife Yoko Ono, the duo were icons of the peace movement denouncing the Vietnam War. In 1969, at the height of their popularity, they headed to Canada. Canada was already a politically charged place. In 1968, Pierre Elliott Trudeau rode a wave of popularity dubbed Trudeaumania for its similarities to the Beatlemania of the era. The sexual revolution, hippie culture, the New Left and the peace movement were challenging norms, frightening the authorities and provoking backlash. Quebec nationalism was putting the power of the English-speaking minority running the province on the defensive, and threatening the breakup of the country. John Lennon and Yoko Ono staged a "bed-in for peace?" at an upscale downtown Montreal hotel. The couple, aided by the CBC, saw a steady stream of journalists, musicians and activists arriving for interviews, political discussions, singing and art-making. The classic "Give Peace A Chance" was recorded there with the help of local Quebecois musicians. Three months later they were back in Canada with Eric Clapton and other friends to play a concert festival in Toronto arranged by local promoters. American acts like Little Richard, The Doors, Bo Diddley and Alice Cooper, along with many Canadian pop musicians of the time, played at the festival. At year's end, the duo met with Prime Minister Trudeau in Ottawa. By this time Trudeau was cracking down on dissent, mainly in Quebec, and falling out of favour with the counterculture crowd. Recounting the story of these events, historian Greg Marquis offers a unique portrayal of Canadian society in the late Sixties, recounting how politicians, activists, police, artists, musicians and businesses across Canada reacted to John and Yoko's presence and message.

Book Sublime Physick

Download or read book Sublime Physick written by Patrick Madden and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2016-02 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A follow-up to Patrick Madden’s award-winning debut, this introspective and exuberant collection of essays is wide-ranging and wild, following bifurcating paths of thought to surprising connections. In Sublime Physick, Madden seeks what is common and ennobling among seemingly disparate, even divisive, subjects, ruminating on midlife, time, family, forgiveness, loss, originality, a Canadian rock band, and much more, discerning the ways in which the natural world (fisica) transcends and joins the realm of ideas (sublime) through the application of a meditative mind. In twelve essays that straddle the classical and the contemporary, Madden transmutes the ruder world into a finer one, articulating with subtle humor and playfulness how science and experience abut and intersect with spirituality and everyday life. For teachers who'd like to adopt this book for their classes, Madden has provided a number of helpful teaching resources, including a 40-minute lecture on his writing process and writing prompts for each of the book's essays. Book Ibsen A Portrait of the Artist

Download or read book Ibsen A Portrait of the Artist written by Hans Heiberg and published by Plunkett Lake Press. This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The least pretentious and in its impact the most popular of Henrik Ibsen biographies” according to the National Library of Norway. Hans Heiberg writes in the preface “I have always wanted to read a biography of Henrik Ibsen as a human being — a portrait of the man before he became a mask” and “Let it be said emphatically that this book is not intended for academics [...] It is meant for the enjoyment of people who are interested in Ibsen himself.” Measured in circulation, it seems that Heiberg achieved his goal: the book was published in three editions in Norwegian, and was translated into Swedish, Danish, English, Russian and French — into more languages than any other Ibsen biography. “Brief and thoroughly readable... this biography is frankly offered ‘for the enjoyment of people who are interested in Ibsen himself.’ Nonetheless, all the basic areas are covered.” — Rolf Fjelde, The New York Times “In spite of [the biography's] economy, all the essentials are there... Ibsen's quirks of temperament — the violent contrasts in his nature, the combination of troll and moralist, of ancient prophet and shrewd businessman — do not surprise Mr. Heiberg, perhaps because he is himself Norwegian.” — Eva Le Gallienne, Saturday Review “[Heiberg’s] portrait of Ibsen is crystal clear, the style simple, while every sentence is meaningful... Heiberg is... an outstanding storyteller, in the descriptions of Ibsen’s family and environment, his childhood and youth, in adversity, development and achievement.” — Farmand “Hans Heiberg’s portrait... has a fresh and personal angle... it is wisely crafted in the details, honest and straightforward... the individual Ibsen stands at its core — with his personal fallibilities and ridiculous characteristics, and precisely therefore also in all his greatness.” — Drammens Tidende and Buskerud’s Magazine “In Ibsen: A Portrait of the Artist, [Heiberg] has intended to draw a portrait of the man behind the artwork. What was he like? And how did he become the way he was?... One can call Ibsen: A Portrait of the Artist a novel, a relation of André Maurois’ well-known biographies of famous men and women, but... Heiberg never invents things which may or may not have happened. He sticks to what he knows or what he is fully justified in believing.” — Arbeiderbladet

But in the process, she finds herself facing misgivings about her role in an interracial relationship. Captivated by the stories of her ancestors and other Asian Americans in history, she must confront a question at the core of her identity: What does it mean to exist in a society that does not notice or understand you?
