Book Writings on the Apocalypse

Download or read book Writings on the Apocalypse written by and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2022-04-15 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Apocalypse or Book of Revelation is one of the most frequently discussed books of the biblical canon and arguably one of the most difficult to interpret. This volume contains three texts as examples of late ancient Christian interpretation of its intriguing visions. It also includes a comprehensive introduction to each text by its respective translator. Brief Explanations of the Apocalypse by Cassiodorus (c. 580), translated by Francis X. Gumerlock from Latin and published in English for the first time in this volume, served as an introduction to the Book of Revelation for Cassiodorus’s students at the Vivarium, a monastery in southern Italy. Cassiodorus divided the Apocalypse into 33 sections, corresponding to the age of Jesus at his Passion, and expressed his belief that John’s visions were revelations of the end of the world, including the Second Coming of Christ for judgment, the defeat of the Antichrist, the general resurrection, and the arrival of the heavenly Kingdom. Testimonies of Gregory the Great on the Apocalypse, translated from Latin by Mark DelCogliano and also published here for the first time in English, is a collection of 55 excerpts on the Apocalypse from the writings of St. Gregory the Great (d. 604) compiled by an anonymous author. Drawn mainly from Gregory’s Moralia, but also from his Book on Pastoral Care and homilies, the excerpts, which are arranged from Revelation 1.4 to 22.17, illustrate Gregory’s grammatical exegesis of the Apocalypse, his interpretation of various figures in the Apocalypse, and his attempt to reconcile certain passages in the Apocalypse with seemingly contradictory texts from other parts of Scripture. The anonymous Greek Scholia on the Apocalypse contains 39 exegetical notes on chapters 1-14 of the Apocalypse, which reveal influences of Origen and Didymus the Blind, among others. The notes provide “spiritual” interpretations of the various passages and give attention to the interpretation of certain words that appear in the Book of Revelation. This new translation from the Greek by T. C. Schmidt utilizes all the Greek editions. Furthermore, its introductory matter contains updates on the Scholia from the latest scholarship and compares each scholion with interpretations found in various patristic authors, mainly of Alexandrian heritage.

Book excerpt: The second epistle to the Thessalonians by Paul, as translated by the Holman Christian Standard Bible, states: "Therefore, we ourselves boast about you among God's churches - about your endurance and faith in all the persecutions and afflictions you endure. It is a clear evidence of God's righteous judgement that you will be counted worthy of God's kingdom, for which you also are suffering, since it is righteous for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you and to reward with rest you who are afflicted, along with us. This will take place at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with His powerful angels, taking vengeance with flaming fire on those who don't know God and on those who don't obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus."

Download or read book Apocalypse Now Volume 5 written by Matthew A. Petti and published by Two Sense Publications. This book was released on 2013-02-24 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apocalypse, translated literally from Greek, is a disclosure of knowledge, hidden from humanity in an era dominated by falsehood and misconception, i.e., a lifting of the veil or revelation, although this sense did not enter English until the 14th century. In religious contexts it is usually a disclosure of something hidden. In the Revelation of John, the last book of the New Testament, the revelation which John receives is that of the ultimate victory of good over evil and the end of the present age, and that is the primary meaning. Today, it is commonly (and erroneously) used in reference to any prophetic End Time scenario or to the end of the world in general. The key to the cryptic message in the book of Revelation is in the Metaphysics of Truth -- THE TRUTH IS ALWAYS TRYING TO REVEAL ITSELF TO US. Once we understand our world as a reflection of the delicate metaphysical balance between Truth's incessant Will to be made manifest and the errant choices of human will, we will see the book of Revelation for what it really is - an unveiling of Truth through the harsh experiences that enlighten us. In the final volume of the Apocalypse Now series, we examine Revelation's Sixth seal. Revelation's Sixth seal marks the day in humanity's future when the delicate balance between Truth and belief will become askew on a COLOSSAL scale. The event will be significant enough to inspire everyone to change their priorities. Just as a near brush with death inspired many towards understanding Truth and the internal nature of our being, so too would humanity be inclined by a world-changing catastrophe. Not a single person can tell us WHEN it will occur, but the event can be demonstrated as Revelation's looming harbinger or warning event. It is a prelude to doom, deception and long-awaited redemption for those who have departed. It earmarks the swift escalation towards the final battle between Truth and our perceptions of it. Discover the mysteries of Revelation's prophecy as the secrets unfold in Volume 5 of the Apocalypse Now Series.
