Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents the results of an investigation into the issues raised by the development of a compiler for APL, a very high level computer programming language. APL presents a number of novel problems for a compiler writer: weak variable typing, run time changes in variable shape, and a host of primitive operations. Through the integration of several recently developed compiler construction techniques, such as data flow analysis, and a novel and space efficient demand driven or lazy evaluation approach to code generation, the author has been able to produce a true compiler for the language while still maintaining the felxibility and ease that are the hallmarks of APL.

Book APL and the Bilingual Learner

Download or read book APL and the Bilingual Learner written by Meena Wood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-04 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessment and Accreditation of Prior Learning systems are now widely used in colleges to open up access for potential students by harnessing their prior learning, knowledge and skills. But one major issue, language and literacy, has not yet been adequately addressed, and our education system still presents many barriers for non-native speakers of English. This book focuses on practical and pro-active ways of approaching these problems using case studies and examples throughout. The various chapters cover: * Ways of resourcing and implementing APL systems * The implications this has for staff development * Methods for assessing prior linguistic ability and accrediting qualifications gained overseas * The role of the guidance advocate worker * The TDLB APL assessor and advisors award * Recent developments within Europe and how these affect National Vocational Qualifications and the current APL systems

Book APL Developing more flexible colleges

Download or read book APL Developing more flexible colleges written by Michael Field and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-04 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The keystones for provision in the new era of Further Education will be flexibility of response, open access, equality of opportunity, and valuing and accrediting alternative ways of learning - all linked together within the concepts of providing life-long learning opportunities. The provision of APL, along with the support services needed to ensure its success, can be used as the `acid test' of whether a college is truly open and accessible to a variety of learners. Written by an experienced manager, this book offers invaluable advice for other managers and senior staff engaged in transforming their colleges to meet students' needs.

Book Computing in Statistical Science through APL

Download or read book Computing in Statistical Science through APL written by Francis John Anscombe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A t the terminal seated, the answering tone: pond and temple bell. ODAY as in the past, statistical method is profoundly affected by T resources for numerical calculation and visual display. The main line of development of statistical methodology during the first half of this century was conditioned by, and attuned to, the mechanical desk calculator. Now statisticians may use electronic computers of various kinds in various modes, and the character of statistical science has changed accordingly. Some, but not all, modes of modern computation have a flexibility and immediacy reminiscent of the desk calculator. They preserve the virtues of the desk calculator, while immensely exceeding its scope. Prominent among these is the computer language and conversational computing system known by the initials APL. This book is addressed to statisticians. Its first aim is to interest them in using APL in their work-for statistical analysis of data, for numerical support of theoretical studies, for simulation of random processes. In Part A the language is described and illustrated with short examples of statistical calculations. Part B, presenting some more extended examples of statistical analysis of data, has also the further aim of suggesting the interplay of computing and theory that must surely henceforth be typical of the develop ment of statistical science.

Book Applying APL Principles in Flexible Assessment

Download or read book Applying APL Principles in Flexible Assessment written by Cook, Cathy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accreditation of prior learning (APL) is a key component of the current drive towards competence-based education and training. The author, in this edition, emphasizes that APL is part of the continuum of learning, not a stand-alone assessment service.

Book APL Equal Opportunities for All

Download or read book APL Equal Opportunities for All written by Cecilia McKelvey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-04 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, the authors explore practical ways of implementing APL for the benefit of individuals, employers and the community as a whole, showing how it can make a real contribution to equality of opportunity. Chapters look at the particular needs of various sectors of the community, and how APL can be used to meet those needs. For ethnic communities, those whose first language is not English, and those who arrive in Britain with qualifications from overseas, the APL process can be a vital stage in the search for education, employment and equality of experience. People with disabilities find that APL can help break through barriers and offer new breadth of opportunity, whilst for women it can lead to greater recognition and improved career progression. Through the use of case studies and practical examples the authors offer detailed guidance on methods of implementation, staff development and continuing support to help tutors, managers and senior staff make effective use of APL.

Book APL Programs for the Mathematics Classroom

Download or read book APL Programs for the Mathematics Classroom written by Norman D. Thomson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for this book grew out of proposals at the APL86 con ference in Manchester which led to the initiation of the I-APL (International APL) project, and through it to the availability of an interpreter which would bring the advantages of APL within the means of vast numbers of school children and their teachers. The motivation is that once school teachers have glimpsed the possibilities, there will be a place for an "ideas" book of short programs which will enable useful algorithms to be brought rapidly into classroom use, and perhaps even to be written and developed in front of the class. A scan of the contents will show how the conciseness of APL makes it possible to address a huge range of topics in a small number of pages. There is naturally a degree of idiosyncrasy in the choice of topics - the selection I have made reflects algo rithms which have either proved useful in real work, or which have caught my imagination as candidates for demonstrating the value of APL as a mathematical notation. Where appropriate, notes on the programs are intended to show the naturalness with which APL deals with the mathematics concerned, and to estab lish that APL is not, as is often supposed, an unreadable lan guage written in a bizarre character set.

Additionally, the book summarizes historical, current, and future treatment strategies in both adults and children, while highlighting the most recent therapeutic recommendations for relapsed disease and the evolving indications for autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplant. This volume also features chapters focusing on secondary APL and therapy, late effects, rare presentations such as APL in the elderly and during pregnancy, and rare APL variants that may represent therapeutic challenges. Written by top experts in the field, Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia: A Clinical Guide is a valuable resource for clinicians and researchers who treat and investigate this disease in children and adults.
