Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aphasia and Associated Speech Problems It is not without much hesitancy that one approaches any of the problems related to speech, whether this be its purely linguistic phase or the complex mechanism of its produc tion and defects. As a field of physiological investigation, it has had its noted pioneers followed by many skilled craftsmen. It has also been especially fertile in its crops of Spirited controversy. Yet the larger part of this develop ment has been well Within the last half century; indeed, the first serious attention to the subject had its inception in a notable contribution by Broca in 1861. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aphasia: And the Cerebral Speech Mechanism The greater part of this work consists of my Edinburgh University M.D. Thesis. I put it before the Medical Profession as an attempt to elucidate a very difficult but very interesting subject-a subject which, if we thoroughly understood it, would, I believe, give us the key to a knowledge of a great part of the mechanism of cerebral functions. The work does not aim at a description of all the disorders of speech; its scope has been confined to the central mechanism concerned in speech written and spoken, the disturbances of that mechanism, and the localisation of the lesions which produce those disturbances. Special attention has been devoted to the differential diagnosis of the clinical varieties of aphasia, and wherever possible the varieties have been illustrated by cases of my own observation. Book The Genesis and Dissolution of the Faculty of Speech

Download or read book The Genesis and Dissolution of the Faculty of Speech written by Joseph Collins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genesis and Dissolution of the Faculty of Speech: A Clinical and Psychological Study of Aphasia Aphasia has gone through many evolutionary stages. After the first wave of its universal recognition had sub sided, it came to be looked upon as a symptom with an established seat and an accompaniment of definite lesions. I As the literature of the subject grew and the cases with anomalfius symptom complexes became more numerous, it was seen that they did not fit in with the simple con ceptions Of those who stood sponsors for its original recognition. This, coupled with the apparent ambition of almost every one who wrote on the subject to adopt a new nomenclature, soon robbed the symptom of its attributed pristine simplicity, and showed it to be in reality one Of the most complex subjects with which the physician and psychologist had to deal. Book On Aphasia Or Loss of Speech

Download or read book On Aphasia Or Loss of Speech written by Frederick Bateman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Aphasia, or Loss of Speech: And the Localisation of the Faculty of Articulate Language The purpose of this little treatise is to bring together, in a convenient form, all the information I could obtain relative to a subject which has of late years engrossed so large a share of the attention, not only of the medical profession, but of scientific men generally, in all parts of the world - the localization of speech, and the causes which interfere with the proper manifestation of that faculty. The different parts of this essay have already appeared, at certain intervals, in the pages of the Journal of Mental Science, and it is in deference to the opinion of those whose judgment I am bound to respect, that I now venture to publish them in a collected form. If I have failed to contribute anything towards bridging the chasm which separates matter from mind, my researches will, at all events, tend to shew how little we really know about that wonderful piece of mechanism - the human brain. Download or read book Aphasia Therapy written by David Howard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, Aphasia Therapy surveys the approaches to aphasia treatment from throughout the world that have been taken both in the past and in the present day. The authors critically examine the assumptions underlying different approaches, and show their effects on modern clinical practices. Finally, the book offers new perspectives on some contemporary issues in aphasia therapy, the effectiveness of treatment, and the relationship between an analysis of a patient’s problems and the processes of treatment. Aphasia Therapy is divided into three parts: Part 1 illustrates some approaches to treatment in the period up to World War II – for instance, a didactic approach which emphasised the importance of repetition; the second part considers the different kinds of approaches to therapy that have developed since then – seven "schools" of treatment are identified; Part 3 considers whether there is evidence that treatment of aphasia is effective: the authors argue that in future, aphasia treatment must involve the development and evaluation of specific treatment methods that are theoretically motivated by a coherent analysis of the individual patient’s problems. Students, postgraduates, and practising clinicians in speech therapy will find this volume of great interest, as will neuropsychologists and clinical psychologists.

Book Aphasia and Its Therapy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Anna Basso
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2003-01-09
  • ISBN : 019803105X
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Aphasia and Its Therapy written by Anna Basso and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-09 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first single-authored book to attempt to bridge the gap between aphasia research and the rehabilitation of patients with this language disorder. Studies of the deficits underlying aphasia and the practice of aphasia rehabilitation have often diverged, and the relationship between theory and practice in aphasiology is loose. The goal of this book is to help close this gap by making explicit the relationship between what is to be rehabilitated and how to rehabilitate it. Early chapters cover the history of aphasia and its therapy from Broca's discoveries to the 1970s, and provide a description of the classic aphasia syndromes. The middle section describes the contribution of cognitive neuropsychology and the treatment models it has inspired. It includes discussion of the relationship between the treatment approach and the functional model upon which it is based. The final chapters deal with aphasia therapy. After providing a sketch of a working theory of aphasia, Basso describes intervention procedures for disorders resulting from damage at the lexical and sentence levels as well as a more general conversation-based intervention for severe aphasics. Anna Basso has run an aphasia rehabilitation unit for more than thirty years. In this book she draws on her considerable experience to provide researchers, clinicians, and their students and trainees in speech-language pathology and therapy, aphasiology, and neuropsychology with comprehensive coverage of the evolution and state of the art of aphasia research and therapy.
