Book Anatomy of an Orogen The Apennines and Adjacent Mediterranean Basins

Download or read book Anatomy of an Orogen The Apennines and Adjacent Mediterranean Basins written by F. Vai and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-21 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book in English reviewing and updating the geology of the whole Apennines, one of the recent most uplifted mountains in the world. The Apennines are the place from which Steno (1669) first stated the principles of geology. The Apennines also represent amongst others, the finding/testing sites of processes and products like volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, olistostromes and mélanges (argille scagliose), salinity crisis, geothermal fluids, thrust-top basins, and turbidites (first represented in a famous Leonardo's painting). As such, the Apennines are a testing and learning ground readily accessible and rich of any type of field data. A growing literature is available most of which is not published in widely available journals. The objective of the book is to provide a synthesis of current data and ideas on the Apennines, for the most part simply written and suitable for an international audience. However, sufficient details and in-depth analyses of the various complex settings have been presented to make this material useful to professional scholars and to students of senior university courses.

Book Styles of Continental Contraction

Download or read book Styles of Continental Contraction written by Stefano Mazzoli and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2006 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This Special Paper includes a selection of material on the various contractional styles and modes of deformation in internal and external zones, and in deep and shallow parts of orogens. The collection of case studies discusses a broad range of processes and phenomena, including thrust tectonic styles (detachment-dominated vs. thick-skinned, or crustal ramp-dominated) in different subduction and collision orogens; modes and timing of thrust-fold and fabric development; the role of tectonic inversion processes and of strain localization vs. distributed deformation; and syn-convergence extensional deformation (and related tectonic exhumation) in orogens. Case studies are from the Zagros, the Apennines, the Appalachians, the Tasmanides of Eastern Australia, and the Moine Thrust Belt. A review of the main subduction- and collision-related orogens of the world is also provided, including the Alps, the Himalayas, the North American Cordillera, the Andes, the Caledonides of Scotland, the Appalachians, the Alice Springs orogeny in Australia, and the Aleutian and Makran accretionary wedges."--Publisher's website.

Book Trekking in the Apennines

Download or read book Trekking in the Apennines written by Gillian Price and published by Cicerone Press Limited. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidebook describes the Grande Escursione Appenninica (GEA), a nearly 400km long, three week trek crossing the Apennines in 23 stages, from Bocca Trabaria to Passo Due Santi on the edge of Liguria. The route dips in and out of Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna, never dropping below 400 metres. Best walked between spring and autumn, it is suitable for any reasonably fit walker, and this guidebook provides step-by-step route descriptions, accompanied by detailed mapping. There are transport options for joining and leaving the walk at a number of points, making it perfect for undertaking in small sections or single-day walks. There are suggestions for accommodation en route in comfortable guest houses and alpine-style huts, making it essential reading for anyone undertaking the GEA. The Apennines are Italy's best-kept secret. Forming the rugged spine of the Italian peninsula, this range provides thousands of kilometres of marked trails over rocky crests and ridges and explores extensive forests and meadows, following routes established long ago by traders, pilgrims and shepherds and little affected by mass tourism.

Book The Adria Microplate GPS Geodesy Tectonics and Hazards

Download or read book The Adria Microplate GPS Geodesy Tectonics and Hazards written by Nicholas Pinter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-05 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tectonic motion of the Adria microplate exerts a first-order control on the tectonics, geology, seismology, resource distribution, and the geological hazards across a broad zone of south-central Europe and the north-central Mediterranean. Since its first application to geodynamical problems, GPS geodesy has gradually revealed the nature of motion and deformation for most active areas of deformation across the Earth. One of the last remaining regional-scale problems on the planet is the motion and associated deformation in the peri-Adriatic region. Selected local-scale studies have examined aspects of this motion, but to date no truly regional analysis or regional team has systematically attacked the full breadth of this problem. A NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) was held in Veszprém, Hungary from April 4-7, 2004. This workshop brought together a distinguished international group of scientists working in the peri-Adriatic region to: (1) review research activities and results, (2) share technical expertise, and (3) provide a springboard for future collaborative research on Adria geodynamics. Areas of agreement were identified, as well as remaining areas of debate. In addition, attention focused on important scientific questions and the potential for international and interdisciplinary research in the future.
