This book was released on 2012-11-20 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the attacks on 11 September 2001, Apache units made significant contributions to the Coalition campaign against Taliban and al-Qaeda forces in Afghanistan. Functioning as the 'killer' part of US Army Hunter-killer teams, Apaches sought out and brought overwhelming firepower to bear on Taliban and al-Qaeda forces, as well as providing direct support to Coalition troops on the ground. Apaches spearheaded the advance of the 3rd Infantry and the 101st airborne divisions into Iraq, engaging in some of the heaviest fighting along the western axis of advance. Weather and enemy fire took a heavy toll on Apaches operating in Western Iraq, but the resilience and flexibility of the Apache was central to the success of this campaign.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Boeing AH-64 Apache is an attack helicopter developed in the United States of America since the early seventies. Use a main rotor and one tail, both with four blades. The helicopter is designed as a twin-engine two-seater in tandem, for use in anti-tank missions, assault, escort and fighter anti-helicopter, to be carried out in all weather conditions and light. The main armament consists of an automatic cannon M230 chain gun caliber 30 mm. It can be equipped with a combination of anti-tank missiles, rockets and air-to-air attached to the side flaps. The Apache is the primary attack helicopter of the US Army and the successor to the Bell AH-1 Cobra. It was designed by Hughes Helicopters to meet the requirements of the program "Helicopter Attack Advanced" (AAH) launched by the US Army in 1972. Later, the McDonnell Douglas acquired Hughes Helicopters and continued the development of the AH-64, AH-64D Apache getting the Longbow. After various corporate events, the project was awarded to Boeing Defense, Space & Security that continued production for the US requirements and for export to other countries. Apaches saw the first operational deployment in battle during the commitment of the US Army during the invasion of Panama in 1989. Other uses of war helicopter from the US Army were the 1991 Gulf War, the Kosovo war in 1999, the war in Afghanistan in 2001 and the war in Iraq 2003. The AH-64 Israelis have participated in all major military operations in his country since the nineties.

Book AH 64 Apache

Download or read book AH 64 Apache written by Jonathan Bernstein and published by MMD-Squadron. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Boeing AH-64 Apache, considered by many to be the world's premier armed helicopter, has been in service with the US Army for more than two decades. Designed principally as an antitank helicopter to combat large Soviet armored formations invading Western Europe, the Apache has had a major renaissance in recent years. Its stunning victories over Iraqi armor during Operation Desert Storm gave the Apache a well-deserved reputation as a tank killer second only to the A-10 in lethality. Yet again, in the mountains of Afghanistan, the Apache has returned to its roots, performing deep attack missions, convoy escort, and close combat attack in support of US troops on the ground, proving its versatility and effectiveness. A detailed look illustrated with more than 200 color photographs, color profiles and detailed line drawings.

Download or read book Adaptation under Fire written by Lt. General David Barno and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-03 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every military must prepare for future wars despite not really knowing the shape such wars will ultimately take. As former U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates once noted: "We have a perfect record in predicting the next war. We have never once gotten it right." In the face of such great uncertainty, militaries must be able to adapt rapidly in order to win. Adaptation under Fire identifies the characteristics that make militaries more adaptable, illustrated through historical examples and the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Authors David Barno and Nora Bensahel argue that militaries facing unknown future conflicts must nevertheless make choices about the type of doctrine that their units will use, the weapons and equipment they will purchase, and the kind of leaders they will select and develop to guide the force to victory. Yet after a war begins, many of these choices will prove flawed in the unpredictable crucible of the battlefield. For a U.S. military facing diverse global threats, its ability to adapt quickly and effectively to those unforeseen circumstances may spell the difference between victory and defeat. Barno and Bensahel start by providing a framework for understanding adaptation and include historical cases of success and failure. Next, they examine U.S. military adaptation during the nation's recent wars, and explain why certain forms of adaptation have proven problematic. In the final section, Barno and Bensahel conclude that the U.S. military must become much more adaptable in order to address the fast-changing security challenges of the future, and they offer recommendations on how to do so before it is too late.

Book Deadly Metal Rain The Legality of Flechette Weapons in International Law

Download or read book Deadly Metal Rain The Legality of Flechette Weapons in International Law written by Eitan Barak and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-10-28 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking the April 2003 rejection by Israel's Supreme Court of a petition to ban flechette use rounds in the densely populated Gaza Strip as its point of departure, this innovative and interdisciplinary book offers the only in-depth study on flechette weapons conducted to date. Its timeliness is demonstrated in the 2009 Goldstone Report’s call for an urgent UNGA discussion on such weapons’ future legality. The book's first part reviews flechette weapon development and use during the Vietnam War as well as the consequent efforts to ban them. It then turns to the Israeli case: the use in Lebanon, the Gaza Strip and the resulting Supreme Court petition. The book's third and main part dissects the prolonged debate over banning flechettes while resting on unique primary sources such as Israeli post mortem reports together with an ample legal and military-medical literature. The book thus provides one of the most comprehensive explorations available of the distinctions separating legal from illegal conventional weapons.

Book Air Defence Artillery in Combat 1972 to the Present

Download or read book Air Defence Artillery in Combat 1972 to the Present written by Mandeep Singh and published by Air World. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “It covers, chapter by chapter the anti-air battle in wars from Yom Kippur (1973) onwards . . . a readable, well researched and well-presented book.” —Army Rumour Service (ARRSE) Anti-aircraft artillery truly came into prominence during the Second World War, shooting down more aircraft than any other weapon and seriously affecting the conduct of air operations. Development continued into the Cold War, resulting in the extensive introduction of surface-to-air missiles, or SAMs. Though the first combat success of such weapons was during the Vietnam War, when a Soviet-designed S-75 Dvina missile shot down a USAF F-4C Phantom on 24 July 1965, it was the Yom Kippur War of 1973 which brought surface-to-air missiles to the center stage. During this short but bitter conflict, Egyptian and Syrian air defenses shot down nearly fifty Israeli aircraft in the first three days alone—almost a fourth of Israel’s entire combat aircraft fleet. In all, Israel lost 104 aircraft during the war and, for the first time, more aircraft were lost to SAMs than any other cause. The age of surface-to-air missiles had dawned. In this unique examination, the author details the development of not just surface-to-air missiles, but all anti-aircraft artillery, since 1972. The part that such equipment played in all of the major conflicts since then is explored, including the Soviet Afghan War, the Falklands War, in which Rapier was deployed, the conflict in Lebanon, Kosovo and Bosnia, the Gulf War, Operation Desert Storm in 1991, and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 1993. The investigation is brought right up to date by a study of the weapons, tactics and engagements seen in the conflicts in Syria and Yemen.
