Download or read book Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion OTEC written by Albert S. Kim and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-05-13 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 21st century is characterized as an era of natural resource depletion, and humanity is faced with several threats due to the lack of food, energy, and water. Climate change and sea-level rise are at unprecedented levels, being phenomena that make predicting the future of ocean resources more complicated. Oceans contain a limitless amount of water with small (but finite) temperature differences from their surfaces to their floors. To advance the utilization of ocean resources, this book readdresses the past achievements, present developments, and future progress of ocean thermal energy, from basic sciences to sociology and cultural aspects.

Book Regional Growth in Mexico

Download or read book Regional Growth in Mexico written by Mr.V. Hugo Juan-Ramon and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1996-08-01 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper finds convergence of real per capita GDP in Mexico’s states and regions during the period of higher average national per capita growth (1970-85), and divergence during the lower-growth period (1985-93). These results hold across states and regions and within regions. The poorest states and regions grew more than twice as fast as the rest during the first period and experienced absolute and relative decline during the second period. The growth performance of a poor state in relation to the group of poor states was more erratic than the growth performance of a richer state in relation to its group.

Book Stuck with Tourism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Matilde Córdoba Azcárate
  • Publisher : University of California Press
  • Release : 2020-10-20
  • ISBN : 0520344499
  • Pages : 297 pages

Download or read book Stuck with Tourism written by Matilde Córdoba Azcárate and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism has become one of the most powerful forces organizing the predatory geographies of late capitalism. It creates entangled futures of exploitation and dependence, extracting resources and labor, and eclipsing other ways of doing, living, and imagining life. And yet, tourism also creates jobs, encourages infrastructure development, and in many places inspires the only possibility of hope and well-being. Stuck with Tourism explores the ambivalent nature of tourism by drawing on ethnographic evidence from the Mexican Yucatán Peninsula, a region voraciously transformed by tourism development over the past forty years. Contrasting labor and lived experiences at the beach resorts of Cancún, protected natural enclaves along the Gulf coast, historical buildings of the colonial past, and maquilas for souvenir production in the Maya heartland, this book explores the moral, political, ecological, and everyday dilemmas that emerge when, as Yucatán’s inhabitants put it, people get stuck in tourism’s grip.

Book Elite Mobilities

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas Birtchnell
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2013-08-22
  • ISBN : 1136155422
  • Pages : 284 pages

Download or read book Elite Mobilities written by Thomas Birtchnell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-22 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small in number but great in influence, mobile elites have shaped the contours of global capitalism. Today these elites continue to flourish globally but in a changing landscape. The current economic crisis—and rising concerns about the moral legitimacy of extreme wealth—coincides with stern warnings over the risks posed by climate change and the unsustainable use of resources. Often an out-of-bounds topic in critical social science, elites are thought of as too inaccessible a group to interview and too variable a minority to measure. This groundbreaking collection sets out to challenge this perception. Through the careful examination of the movements of the one per cent through the everyday spaces of the ninety-nine per cent, Elite Mobilities investigates the shared zones elites inhabit alongside the commons: the executive lounge in the airport, the penthouse in the hotel, or the gated community next to the slum. Bringing together the pioneer scholars in critical sociology today, this collection explores how social scientists can research, map, and ‘track’ the flows and residues of objects, wealth and power surrounding the hypermobile. Elite Mobilities sets a new benchmark in social science efforts to research the powerful and the privileged. It will appeal to students and scholars interested in mobilities, transport, tourism, social stratification, class, inequality, consumption, and global environmental change.

  • Pages : 333 pages

Download or read book Landscape Ethnoecology written by Leslie Main Johnson and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although anthropologists and cultural geographers have explored "place" in various senses, little cross-cultural examination of "kinds of place," or ecotopes, has been presented from an ethno-ecological perspective. In this volume, indigenous and local understandings of landscape are investigated in order to better understand how human communities relate to their terrestrial and aquatic resources. The contributors go beyond the traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) literature and offer valuable insights on ecology and on land and resources management, emphasizing the perception of landscape above the level of species and their folk classification. Focusing on the ways traditional people perceive and manage land and biotic resources within diverse regional and cultural settings, the contributors address theoretical issues and present case studies from North America, Mexico, Amazonia, tropical Asia, Africa and Europe.

  • Author : Tania Islas Weinstein
  • Publisher : Amherst College Press
  • Release : 2024-04-30

Download or read book Beyond Mestizaje written by Tania Islas Weinstein and published by Amherst College Press. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Racism has historically been a taboo topic in Mexico. This is largely due to the nationalist project of mestizaje which contends that because all Mexicans are racially mixed, race is not a salient political issue. In recent years, however, race and racism have become important topics of debate in the country’s public sphere and academia. This book introduces readers to a sample of these diverse and sometimes conflicting views that also intersect with discussions of class. The activists and scholars included in the volume come from fields such as anthropology, linguistics, history, sociology, and political science. Through these diverse epistemological frameworks, the authors show how people in contemporary Mexico interpret the world in racial terms and denounce racism.
