This study is a first-step toward enhancing the safety of our ships at sea.

Book Harpoon Missile vs Surface Ships

Download or read book Harpoon Missile vs Surface Ships written by Lon Nordeen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-18 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illustrated study of premier US anti-ship missile, the AGM/RGM-84 Harpoon, and its 1986 and '88 uses against Libyan and Iranian naval vessels. In this study, defence technology expert Lon Nordeen details the role played by the Harpoon missile in two Cold War flare-ups in the 1980s. The Harpoon was the first tactical anti-ship missile developed by the US Navy to provide a counter to the anti-ship missiles exported around the world by the Soviet Union and China. It was deployed on ships, aircraft, submarines and land vehicles and soon became the most widely used anti-ship missile system in the West, with 7,000+ having been produced since 1977, operated by the military forces of more than 30 nations. This exciting book explores the engagements of the Harpoon by the US Navy against its Libyan and Iranian adversaries, using original photographs and specially commissioned artwork to examine the naval systems and weapons employed by both counterparts. Drawing upon interviews with the US Navy A-6 Intruder crews that deployed the AGM084 variant of the Harpoon in 1986 and 1988, the author brings unique insight to his examination of these fascinating duels.

Book Chinese Anti Ship Ballistic Missile ASBM Development

Download or read book Chinese Anti Ship Ballistic Missile ASBM Development written by Andrew S. Erickson and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM), the DF-21D, has reached the equivalent of Initial Operational Capability. Although it probably has been deployed in small numbers, additional challenges and tests remain. This study examines the ASBM’s capability and history, showing how the DF-21D meets multiple priorities in Chinese defense modernization and in the national security bureaucracy, as well its implications for the United States. The ASBM’s physical threat to U.S. Navy ships will be determined by the development of associated systems and organizations, which currently limit data fusion and coordination in the complex task of identifying a U.S. aircraft carrier in the open ocean. Still, the ASBM poses a direct threat to the foundations of U.S. power project in Asia and will undermine the U.S. position, unless efforts to counter its political-military effects are taken.

Excerpt: BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft or land. It is a joint venture between Republic of India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO-Bangalore) and Russian Federation's NPO Mashinostroeyenia who have together formed BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited. It is the world's fastest cruise missile in operation. The name BrahMos is a portmanteau formed from the names of two rivers, the Brahmaputra of India and the Moskva of Russia. The missile travels at speeds of Mach 2.8 to 3.0. It is about three-and-a-half times faster than the USA's subsonic Harpoon cruise missile. An Air launched variant is also planned which is expected to come out in 2012 and will make India the only country with supersonic missiles in all the defence forces. A hypersonic version of the missile is also presently under development with speed of Mach 6 to boost aerial fast strike capability. It is expected to be ready by 2016. Though India had wanted the BrahMos to be based on a mid range cruise missile, namely P-700 Granit, instead Russia opted for the shorter range sister...

Book Defense of Surface Ships Against Anti Ship Missiles

Download or read book Defense of Surface Ships Against Anti Ship Missiles written by Ramesh Kamar and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis discusses the Anti-Ship Missile problem and explores the various options available for countering the Anti-Ship Missile. Special emphasis has been given to the chaff solution for defeating the Anti-Ship Missile. A program has been written to enable the testing of the effectiveness of the medium range and close range chaff deployed in conjunction with various conditions of wind and various ship's courses. The program can be used to determine the best solution for deploying the medium range chaff given the known parameters such as detection ranges and probable wind conditions. The program was run with medium range chaff deployed in the default position and the wind's course was varied through 180 degrees. For each of the courses of the wind 3 wind speeds were tried. The ship's course was also varied through 360 degrees for each of the winds courses in 45 degree steps. The seduction chaff was automatically deployed by the program.

Book Cruise Missiles and Modern War

Download or read book Cruise Missiles and Modern War written by David J. Nichols and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study examines how the proliferation of technologies has remedied the historical shortcomings of cruise missiles to produce a weapon that has significant military capabilities. The argument in this study is that cruise missiles are more cost-effective weapons than manned aircraft and ballistic missiles. It argues, furthermore, that the proliferation of cruise missile systems and technologies will transform cruise missiles into important and perhaps decisive weapons in the twenty-first century. The second theme of this study is that the United States must develop the ability to defend itself against a cruise missile attack. For a number of reasons, it is unlikely that U.S. defenses could entirely defeat such an attack in view of the difficulties of detecting and engaging a mass attack with cruise missiles that a determined enemy could use to overwhelm the defenses. Bearing in mind reasonable estimates of the numbers of cruise missiles that states could possess, this study concludes with the argument that the optimal strategy for an adversary against which the United States must defend itself is an attack against U.S. logistics and supply centers. This represents the nature of the asymmetric attacks that the United States will confront in the twenty-first century."--Page

Book Anti Ship Missile Defense and the Free Electron Laser

Download or read book Anti Ship Missile Defense and the Free Electron Laser written by Paul Herbert and published by . This book was released on 1998-12-01 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to improve ship self-defense against sea-skimming missiles, several concepts, such as the free electron laser, high-power microwaves, and the Phalanx gun system are reviewed and evaluated in this thesis. Phalanx computer simulations show that Phalanx is an inadequate means of protection. High-power microwaves are found to damage electronics, but calculations show limitations due to diffraction and the possibility of shielding. This thesis evaluates several damage mechanisms caused by the free electron laser's ultra- short picosecond pulse. Theories and experiments predicting the laser damage from short picosecond pulses are reviewed and applied to the fel weapon design. It is found that there may be a significant advantage to the ultra-short pulse format of an FEL weapon; as a result, new experiments are planned. As MW FELs are not yet a reality, this thesis uses computer simulations to explore FEL operation for many values of the electron pulse length, peak current and cavity desynchronism in order to explain recent Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (TJNAF) experimental observations of high average power.
