Download or read book Pueblo Chico written by Lucy R. Lippard and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her second book on Galisteo, New Mexico, cultural historian Lucy R. Lippard writes about the place she has lived for a quarter century. The history of a place she refers to as Pueblo Chico (little town) is based largely on other people's memories--those of the descendants of the original settlers in the early 1800s, heirs of the Spanish colonizers and the indigenous colonized who courageously settled this isolated valley despite official neglect and threats of Indian raids. The memories of those who came later--Hispano and Anglo--also echo through this book. But too many lives have already receded into the land, and few remain to tell the stories. The land itself has the longest memory, harboring traces of towns, trails, agriculture, and other land use that goes back thousands of years. The Galisteo Basin is a cultural landscape that has become familiar to Lippard, simultaneously enriched with the stories she has been told by longtime residents and veiled by those she has not been told. From its inception, Galisteo has been about the vortex of land and lives, about the way the land reveals its coexistence with humans, the ways people have changed it, and the ways the land has in turn changed the people who lived here long enough to become part of it. Complementing the history are two hundred historical and contemporary images, many provided by Galisteo's citizens and heirs.

Book Decoding the Osirian Myth

    Book Details:
  • Author : Panagiota Sarischouli
  • Publisher : Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
  • Release : 2024-09-23
  • ISBN : 311143513X
  • Pages : 554 pages

Download or read book Decoding the Osirian Myth written by Panagiota Sarischouli and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-09-23 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earliest written references to the Osirian myth-complex appeared already in the Pyramid Text spells (c. 2400–2300 BCE). The most complete exposition of this ancient Egyptian myth is, however, found in the Greek treatise On Isis and Osiris, in which the 2nd-century CE Platonist Plutarch utilises Egyptian mythology to advocate his philosophical ideas concerning the divine and the nature of the cosmos. This book aims at “decoding” Plutarch’s narrative of the Osirian myth, linking his claims to the existing Egyptian and Greek parallels. It thus analyses a multitude of mythic and religious traditions from a transcultural perspective, exploring the relation of the Pharaonic features of the Osirian divinities to the features they had acquired in Ptolemaic and Roman times, interpreting the Egyptian myth within the overall framework of parallel mythologies from other cultures, and examining whether the brief mythic stories (historiolae) recited in Late Egyptian ritual texts can be deployed to enrich the context of certain obscure episodes in Plutarch’s account of the myth. The book will be of great interest not only to scholars and students of Plutarch and later Middle Platonism, but also to Egyptologists. Due to its thematic variety and scope, this publication will also appeal to a wider array of readers (specialists and non-specialists alike) interested in religious syncretism, interreligious connections, and the challenge of multiculturalism from Hellenistic times until Late Antiquity.

Book Latin Literatures of Medieval and Early Modern Times in Europe and Beyond

Download or read book Latin Literatures of Medieval and Early Modern Times in Europe and Beyond written by Francesco Stella and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2024-07-15 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The textual heritage of Medieval Latin is one of the greatest reservoirs of human culture. Repertories list more than 16,000 authors from about 20 modern countries. Until now, there has been no introduction to this world in its full geographical extension. Forty contributors fill this gap by adopting a new perspective, making available to specialists (but also to the interested public) new materials and insights. The project presents an overview of Medieval (and post-medieval) Latin Literatures as a global phenomenon including both Europe and extra-European regions. It serves as an introduction to medieval Latin's complex and multi-layered culture, whose attraction has been underestimated until now. Traditional overviews mostly flatten specificities, yet in many countries medieval Latin literature is still studied with reference to the local history. Thus the first section presents 20 regional surveys, including chapters on authors and works of Latin Literature in Eastern, Central and Northern Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas. Subsequent chapters highlight shared patterns of circulation, adaptation, and exchange, and underline the appeal of medieval intermediality, as evidenced in manuscripts, maps, scientific treatises and iconotexts, and its performativity in narrations, theatre, sermons and music. The last section deals with literary “interfaces,” that is motifs or characters that exemplify the double-sided or the long-term transformations of medieval Latin mythologemes in vernacular culture, both early modern and modern, such as the legends about King Arthur, Faust, and Hamlet.

Book McCain s Navy Class of 82

Download or read book McCain s Navy Class of 82 written by Marla Sheiner and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2024-06-28 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What They’re Saying About McCain’s Navy Class of ’82 “Preserving the legacy of Arizona’s John McCain as one of the country’s most iconic statesmen is important work for the public trust and annals of history. As McCain’s first press secretary, Marla Sheiner, brings to historians and chroniclers a collection of rare documents from his first Congressional campaign and testaments to his leadership. A memoir and tribute to McCain making us feel closer to his flame as an ardent protector and defender of democracies throughout the world.” – Greg Barr, Editor In Chief, Phoenix Business Journal “Where would we be without our mentors who show us the way? In Marla Sheiner’s memoir, McCain’s Navy* Class of ‘82, we time travel back to McCain’s first campaign when a fiery start-up staff helped him put down the shoe leather to become elected to Congress representing Arizona’s CD#1. We see in vivid detail the leadership principles that propelled them to victory. This is testament that McCain, who would later be known as The Maverick in his storied US Senate career, accepted the role as mentor to many of us–a role he accepted with duty, honor and love of country. A book for all seasons, all start-ups, candidates, and staff contemplating a run for a cause greater than themselves.” - Dr. Bill Pepicello, Former President, University of Phoenix
