Book excerpt: This international and illustrated work challenges current writings focussing on the problems of urban public space to present a more nuanced and dialectical conception of urban life. Detailed and extensive international urban case studies show how urban open spaces are used for play, which is defined and discussed using Caillois' four-part definition – competition, chance, simulation and vertigo. Stevens explores and analyzes these case studies according to locations where play has been observed: paths, intersections, thresholds, boundaries and props. Applicable to a wide-range of countries and city forms, The Ludic City is a fascinating and stimulating read for all who are involved or interested in the design of urban spaces.

Book Australian Film Festivals

Download or read book Australian Film Festivals written by Kirsten Stevens and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to offer an in-depth examination of the history, operation, and growth of film festivals as a cultural phenomenon within Australia. Tracing the birth of film festivals in Australia in the 1950s through to their present abundance, it asks why film festivals have prospered as audience-driven spectacles throughout Australia, while never developing the same industry and market foci of their international fellows. Drawing on over sixty-years of archival records, festival commentary, interviews with festival insiders and ephemera, this book opens up a largely uncharted history of film culture activity in Australia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than two decades, le hip hop has shown another face of France: danced by minorities associated with immigration and the suburbs, it has channeled rage against racism and unequal opportunity and offered a movement vocabulary for the expression of the multicultural difference that challenges the universalist discourse of the Republic. French hip-hoppers subscribe to U.S. black culture to articulate their own difference, but in France hip-hop was championed by a Socialist cultural policy, subsumed into the cultural heritage, and instituted as a pedagogy. France supported hip-hop dance as an art of the suburbs: a multicultural mix of North African, African and Asian forms that circulate with classical and contemporary dance performance. French hip-hop develops into concert dance, becoming a civic discourse and legitimate employment, not through the familiar model of a culture industry, but within a Republic of Culture. It nuances an Anglo-Saxon model of identity politics with a francophone identity poetics and grants its dancers a national profile as artists who develop dance techniques and transmit body-based knowledge. This book, the first in English to introduce readers to the French hip-hop movement, analyzes the choreographic development of hip-hop into la danse urbaine, touring on national and international stages, as hip-hoppers move beyond the suburbs, figuring new forms within the mobility brought by new media and global migration.

Book The Macedonian Conflict

Download or read book The Macedonian Conflict written by Loring M. Danforth and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greeks and Macedonians are presently engaged in an often heated dispute involving competing claims to a single identity. Each group asserts that they, and they alone, have the right to identify themselves as Macedonians. The Greek government denies the existence of a Macedonian nation and insists that all Macedonians are Greeks, while Macedonians vehemently assert their existence as a unique people. Here Loring Danforth examines the Macedonian conflict in light of contemporary theoretical work on ethnic nationalism, the construction of national identities and cultures, the invention of tradition, and the role of the state in the process of building a nation. The conflict is set in the broader context of Balkan history and in the more narrow context of the recent disintegration of Yugoslavia. Danforth focuses on the transnational dimension of the "global cultural war" taking place between Greeks and Macedonians both in the Balkans and in the diaspora. He analyzes two issues in particular: the struggle for human rights of the Macedonian minority in northern Greece and the campaign for international recognition of the newly independent Republic of Macedonia. The book concludes with a detailed analysis of the construction of identity at an individual level among immigrants from northern Greece who have settled in Australia, where multiculturalism is an official policy. People from the same villages, members of the same families, living in the northern suburbs of Melbourne have adopted different national identities.

Book Theatre Australia Un limited

Download or read book Theatre Australia Un limited written by Geoffrey Milne and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-28 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theatre Australia (Un)limited tells a truly national story of the structures of post-war Australian theatre: its artists, companies, financial and policy underpinnings. It gives an inclusive analysis of three ‘waves’ of Australian theatrical activity after 1953, and the types of organisations which grew up to support and maintain them. Subsidy, repertoire patterns, finances and administration, theatre buildings, companies, festivals and notable productions of the commercial, mainstream and alternative Australian theatre are examined state by state, and changes to governmental policy analysed. Theatrical forms comprise not only spoken-word drama, but also music theatre, comedy, theatre-restaurant, circus, puppetry, community theatre in several forms and new mixed-media genres: physical theatre, circus, visual theatre and contemporary performance. Theatre Australia (Un)limited is the first comprehensive overview of the fortunes of Australian theatre as a national enterprise, providing the industrial analysis of the ‘three waves’ essential for the understanding of the New Wave and of contemporary drama.

Book Her Voice

    Book Details:
  • Author : Varvara Athanasiou-Ioannou
  • Publisher : Kerr Publishing
  • Release : 2021-11-01
  • ISBN : 1875703411
  • Pages : 467 pages

Download or read book Her Voice written by Varvara Athanasiou-Ioannou and published by Kerr Publishing. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book's introduction is clear about where culturally diverse women stand in the 2020s: 'while we have made some meaningful inroads towards equality, we are nowhere near enough to where we need to be.' Such women face the glass ceiling of their gender, and a cultural ceiling as well. It assembles the voices of over 40 women from many walks of life, many of them high achievers, who detail the difficulties and the triumphs they have met within their lives. Their stories, strength and resilience inspire. Her Voice arose from the Food for Thought network, founded 20 years ago in Melbourne, made up of Greek Australian women originally, but quickly drawing in other migrant women and daughters of migrants through friendship, love and the recognition of how much they had in common. ----------------------- "...a beautiful book! it's such a triumph - the content, the design, the intent." - Maggie Hamilton, Sydney "...A monumental book, a gift not only to Greek women but to multicultural Australia, a historical reference point for future generations ... it should be read by all men and women ... Touching, and inspiring" - Bill Papastergiadis OAM, Melbourne "...Narrated with an authentic voice, this book is a treasure trove of life journeys." - Zografina Kopanidis, Melbourne "Varvara's story and her book is beautiful and inspiring, a true display of intelligence, determination and empowerment ... These small windows into other womens choices reminds me how important relatable role models and mentors are for our girls." - Dora Kordakis, Melbourne "I couldn't put the book down because literally and metaphorically I heard their voices. I cried. I giggled. I rejoiced. I connected with all of them. A brilliant book of historic importance." - Maria Makris, Melbourne "Many thanks to Varvara for introducing me to so many wonderful and inspirational women. In particular, I found the key events that shaped and assisted each woman in her journey, to be very interesting! There is certainly valuable advice for younger women who read "Her Voice: Greek Women and their friends". - Sandra Keown "...Amazing book ... a valuable resource for anyone who seeks to understand the role of women within our community and beyond and Varvara Ioannou deserves our heartfelt gratitude ... she is a national treasure ... many of the achievements of women are glossed over, effaced or obscured. This volume allows Greek women of all ages and others connected to our community to speak for themselves. What they choose to say about themselves and their worldview is significant." - Dean Kalimniou, Melbourne "It is a wonderful book with a lot to offer and Varvara should be very proud of having brought it all to us women from all backgrounds but especially for women of Greek origin." - Marina Marangos, Brisbane

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this epic history-cum-anthology, Megan Vaughan tells the story of the theatre blogosphere from the dawn of the carefully crafted longform post to today's digital newsletters and social media threads. Contextualising the key debates of fifteen years of theatre history, and featuring the writings of over 40 theatre bloggers, Theatre Blogging brings past and present practitioners into conversation with one another. Starting with Encore Theatre Magazine and Chris Goode in London, George Hunka and Laura Axelrod in New York, Jill Dolan at Princeton University, and Alison Croggon in Melbourne, the work of these influential early adopters is considered alongside those who followed them. Vaughan explores issues that have affected both arts journalism and the theatre industry, profiling the activist bloggers arguing for broader representation and better working conditions, highlighting the innovative dramaturgical practices that have been developed and piloted by bloggers, and offering powerful insights into the precarious systems of labour and economics in which these writers exist. She concludes by considering current threats to the theatre blogosphere, and how the form continues to evolve in response to them.
