Download or read book Gardner s Commercially Important Chemicals written by G. W. A. Milne and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-09-02 with total page 1205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exhaustive resource for the industrial chemical community Through eleven editions, Gardner's Chemical Synonyms and Trade Names has become the best-known and most widely used source of information on chemicals in commerce. This companion book reflects the continuing research underlying Gardner's and presents a major expansion of the information provided for individual chemical compounds. Gardner's Commercially Important Chemicals: Synonyms, Trade Names, and Properties: * Contains 4,174 chemical entries and information such as structure, molecular formula, and chemical name * Includes synonyms for each chemical, including other identifiers, chemical names, trade names, and trivial names, in English and other languages * Provides chemical properties of the compounds, information concerning known uses of the chemical and biological data-in particular, acute toxicity in various species, where available * Lists the companies that manufacture or supply the listed chemicals * Describes bulk inorganic chemicals, major pesticides (herbicides, insecticides, antifungal agents, etc.), and many dyestuffs, surfactants, and metals, along with the most commonly used drugs * Contains indexes by chemical name and synonym, Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry Numbers, and EINECS (European Inventory of Existing Commercial Substances) numbers One useful feature of this database is the inclusion of physical properties and use data for pure chemicals. Properties that have been provided, when available, include: the melting point, boiling point, density or specific gravity, optical rotation, ultraviolet absorption, solubility, and acute toxicity. The major uses of most of the chemicals are indicated and, where appropriate, regulatory information is also provided.

Book Toxicological Risks of Selected Flame Retardant Chemicals

Download or read book Toxicological Risks of Selected Flame Retardant Chemicals written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-07-06 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ignition of upholstered furniture by small open flames from matches, cigarette lighters, and candles is one of the leading causes of residential-fire deaths in the United States. These fires accounted for about 16% of civilian fire deaths in 1996. On average, each year since 1990, about 90 deaths (primarily of children), 440 injuries, and property losses amounting to 50 million dollars have resulted from fires caused by the ignition of upholstered furniture by small open flames. Certain commercial seating products (such as aircraft and bus seats) are subject to flammability standards and sometimes incorporate FR-treated upholstery cover materials, but there is no federal-government requirement for residential upholstered furniture, and it is generally not treated with FR chemicals. It is estimated that less than 0.2% of all U.S. residential upholstery fabric is treated with flame-retardant (FR) chemicals. The Consumer Product Safety Act of 1972 created the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) as an independent federal regulatory agency whose mission is to protect the public from unreasonable risks of injury and death associated with consumer products. CPSC also administers the Flammable Fabrics Act, under which it regulates flammability hazards and the Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA), which regulates hazardous substances including chemicals. In 1993, the National Association of State Fire Marshals petitioned CPSC to issue a performance-based flammability standard for upholstered furniture to reduce the risk of residential fires. The Commission granted that portion of the petition relating to small open flame ignition risks. In response to concerns regarding the safety of FR chemicals, Congress, in the fiscal year 1999 appropriations report for CPSC, requested that the National Research Council conduct an independent study of the health risks to consumers posed by exposure to FR chemicals that are likely to be used in residential upholstered furniture to meet a CPSC standard. The National Research Council assigned the project to the Committee on Toxicology (COT) of the Commission on Life Sciences' Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology. COT convened the Subcommittee on Flame-Retardant Chemicals, which prepared this report. Subcommittee members were chosen for their recognized expertise in toxicology, pharmacology, epidemiology, chemistry, exposure assessment, risk assessment, and biostatistics. Toxicological Risks of Selected Flame-Retardant Chemicals is organized into 18 chapters and two appendices. Chapter 2 describes the risk assessment process used by the subcommittee in determining the risk associated with potential exposure to the various FR chemicals. Chapter 3 describes the method the subcommittee used to measure and estimate the intensity, frequency, extent, and duration of human exposure to FR chemicals. Chapters 4-19 provide the subcommittee's review and assessment of health risks posed by exposure to each of the 16 FR chemicals. Data gaps and research needs are provided at the end of these chapters.

Book Engineered Tribological Composites

Download or read book Engineered Tribological Composites written by Roy Cox and published by SAE International. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roy Cox provides readers with a thorough presentation of the topic, beginning with the earliest work on brakes by Frood in the early 1900s and friction studies by daVinci in the 1400s. From there, details about the processes of wear and the components of tribological systems are presented. Methods of manufacturing friction materials are described, and the elements of friction material are detailed—binders, fibers, abrasives, and lubricants. A large portion of the book delves deeply into materials for binders, resins, fibers, abrasives, lubricants, and fillers, providing background on the various materials, their pros and cons, and numerous ways they can be applied to friction systems. Much of this discussion focuses on the compositional makeup and effects of ingredients as they relate to the wear and friction performance of the final product. Readers will gain a solid background about tribology, as well as a solid understanding of matrices, fibers and additives that make up engineered tribological composites. They will learn how manufacturing affects these composites, along with how friction and wear affect those materials. They will gain a better understanding of which materials provide the optimum balance of cost, friction and wear for various applications, enabling them to better create and apply engineered tribological composites for whatever application is at hand.

Book Biological Monitoring of Toxic Metals

Download or read book Biological Monitoring of Toxic Metals written by Thomas W. Clarkson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is the result of a conference on "Biological Monitoring of Metals" held in Rochester, June 2-6, 1986, organized jointly by the Environmental Health Sciences Center of the School of Medicine and Dentistry of the University of Rochester, NY, and the Scientific Committee on the Toxicology of Metals within the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH) at the Karolinska Institute and the National (Swedish) Institute of Environmental Medicine and the University of Umea, Sweden. The aim of the Conference was to define and evaluate the scientific basis for the biological monitoring of metals. The conference was co-sponsored by the World Health Organization through its International Program on Chemical Safety and received substantial encouragement and support from the Swedish Work Environmental Fund and the United States Environmental Protection Agency. This was the second conference organized jointly by the Scientific Committee on the Toxicology of Metals and The Toxicology Division of the University of Rochester. The previous joint conference was held in 1982 on the Reproductive and Developmental Toxicity of Metals. In addition, conferences have been organized by each group (see Appendices A and B). Several of these conferences are specially relevant to the topic of the current conference. These include the joint conference mentioned above and the conferences on dose-effect and dose-response relationship held in Tokyo in 1974 and on accumulation of metals held in Buenos Aires in 1972.
