Book Bone Health and Osteoporosis

Download or read book Bone Health and Osteoporosis written by United States Public Health Service and published by . This book was released on 2004-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first-ever Surgeon General's Report on bone health and osteoporosis illustrates the large burden that bone disease places on our Nation and its citizens. Like other chronic diseases that disproportionately affect the elderly, the prevalence of bone disease and fractures is projected to increase markedly as the population ages. If these predictions come true, bone disease and fractures will have a tremendous negative impact on the future well-being of Americans. But as this report makes clear, they need not come true: by working together we can change the picture of aging in America. Osteoporosis, fractures, and other chronic diseases no longer should be thought of as an inevitable part of growing old. By focusing on prevention and lifestyle changes, including physical activity and nutrition, as well as early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, Americans can avoid much of the damaging impact of bone disease and other chronic diseases. This Surgeon General's Report brings together for the first time the scientific evidence related to the prevention, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of bone disease. More importantly, it provides a framework for moving forward. The report will be another effective tool in educating Americans about how they can promote bone health throughout their lives. This first-ever Surgeon General's Report on bone health and osteoporosis provides much needed information on bone health, an often overlooked aspect of physical health. This report follows in the tradition of previous Surgeon Generals' reports by identifying the relevant scientific data, rigorously evaluating and summarizing the evidence, and determining conclusions.

Book Medicinal Chemistry of Anticancer Drugs

Download or read book Medicinal Chemistry of Anticancer Drugs written by Carmen Avendaño and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 767 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medicinal Chemistry of Anticancer Drugs, Second Edition, provides an updated treatment from the point of view of medicinal chemistry and drug design, focusing on the mechanism of action of antitumor drugs from the molecular level, and on the relationship between chemical structure and chemical and biochemical reactivity of antitumor agents. Antitumor chemotherapy is a very active field of research, and a huge amount of information on the topic is generated every year. Cytotoxic chemotherapy is gradually being supplemented by a new generation of drugs that recognize specific targets on the surface or inside cancer cells, and resistance to antitumor drugs continues to be investigated. While these therapies are in their infancy, they hold promise of more effective therapies with fewer side effects. Although many books are available that deal with clinical aspects of cancer chemotherapy, this book provides a sorely needed update from the point of view of medicinal chemistry and drug design. Presents information in a clear and concise way using a large number of figures Historical background provides insights on how the process of drug discovery in the anticancer field has evolved Extensive references to primary literature

Book Human Pharmaceuticals Hormones and Fragrances

Download or read book Human Pharmaceuticals Hormones and Fragrances written by Thomas Ternes and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-30 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The observed concentrations of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in raw wastewater confirm that municipal wastewater represents the main disposal pathway for the PPCPs consumed in households, hospitals and industry. In sewage treatment plant effluents most PPCPs are still present, since many of these polar and persistent compounds are being removed only partially or, in some cases, not at all. Treated wastewater therefore represents an important point source for PPCPs into the environment. After passing a sewage treatment plant the treated wastewater is mostly discharged into rivers and streams or sometimes used to irrigate fields. If drinking water is produced using resources containing a substantial proportion of treated wastewater (e.g. from river water downstream of communities) the water cycle is closed and indirect potable reuse occurs. Human Pharmaceuticals, Hormones and Fragrances provides an overview of the occurrence, analytics, removal and environmental risk of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in wastewater, surface water and drinking water. The book covers all aspects of the fate and removal of PPCPs in the whole water cycle: consumption and occurrence, analytical methods, the legal background, environmental risk assessment, human and animal toxicology, source control options, wastewater and drinking water treatment as well as indirect reuse. The book presents a summary of the results obtained during the EU project "Poseidon", combined with further expert knowledge on the field, and is written at a level appropriate for professionals involved in management of water resource quality. Professionals in the field including decision makers, engineers and scientists, as well as students entering the field, will find this an invaluable source of information. First comprehensive study on the assessment, fate and removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in wastewater and drinking water treatment. Emphasises the importance of micropollutants in the water cycle, provides methods for quantifying their fate and technologies for their removal.

Book The Juvenile Hormones

    Book Details:
  • Author : L. Gilbert
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1468479474
  • Pages : 582 pages

Download or read book The Juvenile Hormones written by L. Gilbert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The juvenile hormones of insects are unique molecules in terms of their chemical nature (methyl esters of sesquiterpene epoxides) and action (both as modulators of morphogenesis during the larval life of insects and as a gonadotropic agent in many female adults). Although a symposium dedicated to the chemistry, metabolism and effects of juvenile hormone at a number of levels would be merited on the basis of its interest to the chemist, physiologist, endo crinologist, developmental biologist and entomologist, the juvenile hormones are special in the sense that juvenile hormone mimics (juvenoids, insect growth regulators, analogs) are currently being utilized to control various insec. t pests. Indeed, a number of commercial firms are currently developing new compounds with juven ile hormone activity that might possess a narrow spectrum of acti vity and which would be relatively biodegradable. Thus, a symposium on the juvenile hormones is also merited on a practical basis since juvenoids are already becoming constituents of our environment and it is apparent that in order to design effective mimics of the natural juvenile hormones, o~e should understand the means by which juvenile hormone elicits its effects. As will become evident to the reader, the great majority of data presented at this symposium have not been published previously and the symposium itself was organized along natural divisions dealing with the chemistry, metaoolism and multi-level modes of action of the juvenile hormones. Special lectures were presented by Professors C. M. Williams, B. W. O'Malley and W. S.

Book Clinical Applications of Mifepristone RU486 and Other Antiprogestins

Download or read book Clinical Applications of Mifepristone RU486 and Other Antiprogestins written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1993-02-01 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mifepristone (RU486), the first clinically available antiprogestin, has generated great interest since its discovery in the early 1980s. Today, it is recognized that mifepristone, along with other antiprogestins, has a potentially significant therapeutic role in human health and disease, with likely applicability to a variety of pregnancy-related conditions (e.g., management of labor) and to contraception, endometriosis, and cancer, among others. But because mifepristone has been studied and used most widely as a means of nonsurgical abortion, political issues have thus far limited research on the drug and prevented its introduction into the U.S. market. This book provides an unbiased evaluation of current knowledge about both the fundamental nature of antiprogestins as well as their possible use in treating numerous diseases and conditions, and it contains recommendations for future research.
