Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthony Minghella: Interviews is an illuminating anthology of in-depth conversations with this important contemporary film director and producer. The collection explores Minghella's ideas on every aspect of the cinematic creative process including screenwriting, acting, editing, the use of music in film, and other topics concerning the role of the film director. Minghella (1954-2008) was a highly regarded British playwright (Made in Bangkok), and television writer (Inspector Morse) before turning to film directing with his quirky, highly regarded first film, Truly, Madly, Deeply, in 1990. He went on to direct an extraordinary trilogy of large-scale films, all adapted from significant works of contemporary literature. Minghella's 1996 adaptation of Michael Ondaatje's poetic novel The English Patient was the director's most critically and commercially successful film and went on to win dozens of awards around the world, including nine academy awards. Minghella followed this film with his entertaining, elegant adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's The Talented Mr. Ripley, a film that enjoyed great critical and commercial success and featured some of the best acting of the 1990s by its talented cast of young, rising stars, Jude Law, Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Minghella's ambitious adaptation of Charles Frazier's American Civil War romance, Cold Mountain, was released in 2003, and firmly marked Minghella as a director of intimate, yet large-scale epic cinema worthy of David Lean. Although Minghella was a successful film director and producer, he was also an important part of the cultural life of the U.K. He was awarded a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) in 2001 for his contributions to culture, and he was Chairman of the Board of Governors of the British Film institute from 2004 to 2007.

Book excerpt: Director Anthony Minghella (The English Patient, The Talented Mr Ripley) has produced a powerful adaptation for film of the bestselling debut novel by Charles Frazier. Set in the waning days of the American Civil War, Cold Mountain is the story of Inman, a wounded Confederate soldier (played by Jude Law) who struggles on a perilous journey to get back home to Cold Mountain, North Carolina - and to Ada (Nicole Kidman), the woman he left behind in going off to fight. In the course of his journey, Inman encounters a succession of extraordinary characters, while back at home, Ada is learning the ropes of managing her late father's farm with the assistance of a drifter named Ruby (Renee Zellweger), who teaches her a few things in turn. Translating Frazier's novel into the language of cinema, Minghella imparts to Cold Mountain the same level of emotional intensity that he conjured in his celebrated adaptation of The English Patient.

Book What s the Story The Director Meets Their Screenplay

Download or read book What s the Story The Director Meets Their Screenplay written by Peter Markham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-07 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A structured perspective on the crucial interface of director and screenplay, this book encompasses twenty-two seminal aspects of the approach to story and script that a director needs to understand before embarking on all other facets of the director’s craft. Drawing on seventeen years of teaching filmmaking at a graduate level and on his prior career as a director and in production at the BBC, Markham shows how the filmmaker can apply rigorous analysis of the elements of dramatic narrative in a screenplay to their creative vision, whether of a short or feature, TV episode or season. Combining examination of such fundamental topics as story, premise, theme, genre, world and setting, tone, structure, and key images with the introduction of less familiar concepts such as cultural, social, and moral canvas, narrative point of view, and the journey of the audience, What’s The Story? The Director Meets Their Screenplay applies the insights of each chapter to a case study—the screenplay of the short film Contrapelo, nominated for the Jury Award at Tribeca in 2014. This book is an essential resource for any aspiring director who wants to understand exactly how to approach a screenplay in order to get the very best from it, and an invaluable resource for any filmmaker who wants to understand the important creative interplay between the director and screenplay in bringing a story to life.
