With technology disruptions and the transformation of industry landscapes, top-performing organizations constantly evolve to gain or maintain a competitive advantage in their industries; organizations rely on their workforce commitment to a shared mission. As industries evolve and increasingly become more competitive globally, specifically in the US, organizations must invest in HR personnel and allocate budgets to identify effective strategies to maintain worker satisfaction which in some identified industries directly correlates to workplace performance. Singh defines the job satisfaction phenomenon as an emotional response closely related to an individual's sense of contribution in his/her workplace (Singh et al., 2019). To measure the antecedence of job satisfaction, the constructs of leadership empowerment and organizational culture are used to set the perimeters of this research. This paper reviews the literature regarding the confines of the phenomenon and the identified constructs of leadership empowerment and organizational culture. The findings in the literature draw implications for (1) organizational appeal to recruitment, (2) Employee retention, and (3) increased workplace productivity. This exploratory qualitative study looks into existing research on the job satisfaction phenomenon via consensus on popular literature on the subject. It uses these findings and best practices to drive further insights by conducting research via the survey on participating subjects and case studies to supplement the findings.

Book excerpt: Work-related learning can be broadly seen to be concerned with all forms of education and training closely related to the daily work of (new) employees, and is increasingly playing a central role in the lives of individuals, groups or teams and the agenda’s of organizations. However, as this area of study becomes more prominent, debates have opened about the nature of the field, as well as about its configurations and effects. For example, some authors have a broad definition of WRL and define it as learning for work, at work and through work, ranging from formal, through semi-structured to informal learning. Others prefer to use the concept of WRL mainly in connection to informal, incidental learning processes during work, leading to competent workplace learners. Formal and informal learning are distinguished from each other with respect to the level of intention (implicit/non-intentional/incidental versus deliberative/intentional/structured). Another point of discussion originates from the different ‘theoretical backgrounds’ of the authors: the ‘learning theorists’ versus the ‘organizational theorists’. The first group is mainly interested in the question of how learning comes about; the second group is predominantly interested in the search for factors affecting learning.

Book excerpt: Given the recent increase in the investigation of the intraindividual variability of job satisfaction (e.g., Ilies & Judge, 2002) the present study sought to further our understanding of this topic through more comprehensively investigating the potential predictors and criteria of the frequency and amplitude with which individuals vary in their levels of job satisfaction over short time frames. It was hoped that by including both personality (i.e., NA, PA, Neuroticism, Extraversion, and Openness to Experience) and situational predictors (i.e. job stressors), results from this study would help clarify how individual differences interact with situational characteristics to explain patterns of within-person variability. In addition, this study also sought to determine the extent to which job satisfaction variability is important to the prediction of employee job performance and turnover intentions. Results from the current study suggest that it may not be useful to distinguish between the frequency and amplitude with which individuals vary in their levels of job satisfaction over short time frames. Aside from this general conclusion, the situational predictor and three of the five personality traits investigated were shown to be important in explaining the frequency with which individuals' coworker, nature of work and promotion satisfaction varied. Variation in the facet of work satisfaction was also found to be an important predictor of job performance, and this remained true after accounting for mean levels of work satisfaction measured cross-sectionally. Finally, results lend some support to suggest the facets of coworker and nature of work satisfaction to be particularly important when considering short-term within-person variation. While many of the hypothesized relationships were not supported, given the current results, it seems worthwhile to continue to investigate the roles that personality and situational change play in describing the within-person variation of different facets of job satisfaction as well as the role of this within-person variation in predicting organizational outcomes.

Book excerpt: Employee engagement has received a great deal of attention in the last decade in the popular business press and among consulting firms and the practitioner community. They claim employee engagement is a new human resource practice that business organizations can use in order to cope with the uncertainty of turbulent industry conditions. However, in the academic community, the concept remains new, and therefore, the concept requires rigorous seminal studies to validate it. Given that practical interest in work engagement has outstripped the currently available research evidence, fundamental questions, like how it can be increased and how and why it benefits individuals and organizations, still require answers. Therefore, this study empirically tested relationships among antecedents and consequences of employee engagement in the hotel setting. In particular, this study provided theory-based empirical evidence regarding whether employee evaluations of self (i.e., core self-evaluations) and perceptions of organizational environment (i.e., psychological climate) affect employee engagement. This study also investigated how employee engagement directly and indirectly leads to intrinsic rewards, job satisfaction, personal attachment to an organization (i.e., organizational commitment), and the leader-member exchange relationship (LMX). In accordance with the purpose and objectives of the study, 11 hypotheses were proposed based on several theories: Kahn's three psychological conditions theory, job demands-resources model, social exchange theory, and conservation of resources theory. To test the hypotheses, data were collected from 394 hotel employees and managers in the United States. The proposed relationships were examined using hierarchical multiple regression and structural equation modeling. Results of hypothesis testing showed that core self-evaluations and three components of psychological climate (managerial support for service, interdepartmental service, and team communication) positively influence employee engagement. The results also revealed that employee engagement is positively associated with all the outcome variables. This study further demonstrated that LMX mediates the relationships of employee engagement with job satisfaction and organizational commitment; job satisfaction mediates the relationships between employee engagement and organizational commitment and between LMX and organizational commitment. Given that employee engagement is an important current issue for hospitality companies, the findings should provide the hotel industry with a more complete picture of how employee engagement is associated with its antecedents and outcomes. A discussion of managerial implications is included along with theoretical implications of the findings, an evaluation of research limitations, and directions for future research.

I asked them to write in non-technical terms, e.g., without a lot of statistics, and almost all did so. The previous handbook proved to be quite popular, so I was asked to edit a second edition. This new edition has been expanded to 33 topics, and there are some new authors for the previously included topics. The new edition also includes: updated case examples, updated references and practical exercises at the end of each chapter. It also includes a preface on evidence-based management. The principles for the first edition were intended to be relatively timeless, so it is no surprise that most of the principles are the same (though some chapter titles include more than one principle). This book could serve as a textbook in advanced undergraduate and in MBA courses. It could also be of use to practicing managers and not just those in Human Resource departments. Every practicing manager may not want to read the whole book, but I am willing to guarantee that every one will find at least one or more chapters that will be practically useful. In this time of economic crisis, the need for effective management practices is more acute than ever.

Book excerpt: The aim of the current study was to investigate the influence of dispositions and work situations on job satisfaction, and the mediating role of perceptions of work situations on the relationship between dispositions and job satisfaction. Identifying the antecedents of job satisfaction is important both theoretically and practically, as job satisfaction is closely related to other organizational variables such as job performance, organizational citizenship behavior, absenteeism and turnover. Most of the extant studies on the antecedents of job satisfaction have focused on populations in economically developed countries. However, there are cultural and language differences between these countries and China, and it is unclear if findings in other countries can be generalized to the Chinese population. Furthermore, there are few comprehensive studies investigating a range of both situational and dispositional variables. The main contribution of the current study is to incorporate major dispositional and situational variables and investigate the mediating role of perceived work situations on the disposition and job satisfaction relationship in China.A cross-sectional research design was used in the study. The sample was taken from employees in industrial and commercial organizations in China's northeast. All the measures were well-established, widely used multi-item measures developed in English-speaking countries. Confirmatory factor analysis and Cronbach's alpha demonstrated that the measures were of good validity and reliability and could be used for Chinese populations.Regression analysis found that of the ten situational variables, seven had a statistically significant relationship with job satisfaction: distributive justice, supervisor support, role conflict, autonomy, routinization, role ambiguity, and promotional chances. Of the seven situational variables, distributive justice had the largest effect on job satisfaction, followed by supervisor support, role conflict, autonomy, routinization, role ambiguity, and promotional chances. Three situational variables were not significantly related to job satisfaction: work overload, co-worker support, and pay level. The relationship between job satisfaction and positive affectivity and conscientiousness were partially mediated by perception of work situations, while the relationships between job satisfaction and negative affectivity and neuroticism were completely mediated by perception of work situations. Of the dispositional variables, positive affectivity had the strongest total effect on job satisfaction, much of it mediated by perceived work situations.The findings of this research support the theory that job satisfaction has both a dispositional source and situational source. Disposition has an influence on job satisfaction both directly and indirectly through work situations. The research findings also suggest that most of the findings on the antecedents of job satisfaction reported in research undertaken in economically developed countries can be generalized to China. However, the finding of a non-significant relationship between work overload, co-worker support and job satisfaction could be country-specific. In a transitional country such as China, work overload may be linked to secure jobs, and as a result people may be not unhappy to work intensively for long hours. In terms of practical implications, the findings of this study provide managers in industrial and commercial enterprises with guidelines in establishing conditions for the creation and maintenance of high levels of employee's job satisfaction.
