Download or read book Another Side of Bob Dylan written by Victor Maymudes and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2014-09-09 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vivid, first-hand account of Nobel Prize-winning singer and songwriter Bob Dylan as an artist, friend, and celebrity, illustrated with never-before-seen photographs, and told by an engaging raconteur who cut his own swathe through the turbulent counterculture. August 2014 marks 50 years since Bob Dylan released his fourth album, Another Side of Bob Dylan. Recorded in one night, in the middle of a turbulent year in his life, the music marked a departure from Dylan's socially-conscious folk songs and began his evolution toward other directions. During the years they spent together, few people outside of Dylan's immediate family were closer than Victor Maymudes, who was Dylan's tour manager, personal friend, and travelling companion from the early days in 1960s Greenwich Village through the late 90's. Another Side of Bob Dylan recounts landmark events including Dylan's infamous motorcycle crash; meeting the Beatles on their first US tour; his marriage to Sara Lownds, his romances with Suze Rotolo, Joan Baez, and others; fellow travelers Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Wavy Gravy, Dennis Hopper, The Band, The Traveling Wilburys, and more; memorable concerts, and insights on Dylan's songwriting process. On January 26th, 2001, after recording more than 24 hours of taped memories in preparation for writing this book, Victor Maymudes suffered an aneurysm and died. His son Jacob has written the book, using the tapes to shape the story. A Los Angeles Times Best Seller.

Excerpt: The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan is the second studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released in May 1963 by Columbia Records. Whereas his debut album Bob Dylan had contained only two original songs, Freewheelin initiated the process of writing contemporary words to traditional melodies. Eleven of the thirteen songs on the album are original compositions by Dylan. The album kicks off with "Blowin' in the Wind," which would become one of the anthems of the 1960s, and an international hit for folk trio Peter, Paul & Mary soon after the release of Freewheelin. The album featured several other songs which came to be regarded as amongst Dylan's best compositions and classics of the 1960s folk scene: "Girl from the North Country," "Masters of War," "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall" and "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right." Dylan's lyrics embraced stories ripped from the headlines about civil rights and he articulated anxieties about the fear of nuclear warfare. Balancing this political material were love songs, sometimes bitter and accusatory, and material that features surreal humor. Freewheelin' showcased Dylan's songwriting talent...

Book No Requiem for the Space Age

Download or read book No Requiem for the Space Age written by Matthew D. Tribbe and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-06 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the summer of 1969-the summer Americans first walked on the moon-musician and poet Patti Smith recalled strolling down the Coney Island Boardwalk to a refreshment stand, where "pictures of Jesus, President Kennedy, and the astronauts were taped to the wall behind the register." Such was the zeitgeist in the year of the moon. Yet this holy trinity of 1960s America would quickly fall apart. Although Jesus and John F. Kennedy remained iconic, by the time the Apollo Program came to a premature end just three years later few Americans mourned its passing. Why did support for the space program decrease so sharply by the early 1970s? Rooted in profound scientific and technological leaps, rational technocratic management, and an ambitious view of the universe as a realm susceptible to human mastery, the Apollo moon landings were the grandest manifestation of postwar American progress and seemed to prove that the United States could accomplish anything to which it committed its energies and resources. To the great dismay of its many proponents, however, NASA found the ground shifting beneath its feet as a fierce wave of anti-rationalism arose throughout American society, fostering a cultural environment in which growing numbers of Americans began to contest rather than embrace the rationalist values and vision of progress that Apollo embodied. Shifting the conversation of Apollo from its Cold War origins to larger trends in American culture and society, and probing an eclectic mix of voices from the era, including intellectuals, religious leaders, rock musicians, politicians, and a variety of everyday Americans, Matthew Tribbe paints an electrifying portrait of a nation in the midst of questioning the very values that had guided it through the postwar years as it began to develop new conceptions of progress that had little to do with blasting ever more men to the moon. No Requiem for the Space Age offers a narrative of the 1960s and 1970s unlike any told before, with the story of Apollo as the story of America itself in a time of dramatic cultural change.

Book The Search for a Relational Home

Download or read book The Search for a Relational Home written by Chris Jaenicke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Search for a Relational Home, Chris Jaenicke gives the reader an inside view of what actually happens in psychotherapy and how change occurs. He describes how both participants – the patient and the therapist – feel, and how they affect each other. The reader is encouraged to vicariously partake in the process from the perspective of his or her own life experiences. The book describes the nature of therapeutic action through a radicalized version of intersubjective systems theory. It demonstrates how psychotherapy is an outcome of a highly personal encounter between two unique human beings, and how, while the goal of psychoanalysis is to help the patient, this can only be achieved inasmuch as both participants are willing to undergo transformation. Jaenicke clarifies how both successes and failures as well as personal strengths and weaknesses play a constitutive part in the psychotherapeutic process. The Search for a Relational Home also provides theoretical and practical guidelines for supervision. Jaenicke presents here a unique approach to the process of psychotherapy which will be vital reading for psychoanalysts, psychotherapists and those in training as well as students in all fields of mental health.

Book The African Journalist

Download or read book The African Journalist written by Keith Nalumango and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when you stumble upon evidence that implicates fellow executives in corrupt practices, and in your quest to fight the vice, you face the obstacles of ethnicity and trade unionism, backed by bad governance from the highest political office in the land? Alfred and Lewis are senior executives at an African broadcasting company who produce evidence against corrupt fellow executives, but most of whom belong to the state President's ethnic group. In the silent war that ensues, the President, First Lady, Vice President, some Cabinet Ministers and Backbenchers, the Intelligence Service, the company's Board of Directors, its nonchalant CEO and some of the company's clients side with the villain, Spade, the VP of Operations and famous TV personality. Unionized workers go on a pro-Spade strike. Undaunted, Alfred and Lewis threaten to spill the beans. So, Spade resigns his job, but only after being promised a diplomatic appointment. When Alfred succeeds Spade as VP of Operations, he strives to clean the slate. But without the CEO's support, and in an environment where some company employees are on State House payroll, will Alfred succumb to the demands of ruling party politicians for the control of the newsroom diary? Will the corruption ever stop? Will Lewis's contract of service be renewed? Tipped about a danger to his life, Alfred and family must leave for the US. From the President's office to the boardroom and the courts, from TV studios to the cemeteries, the scenic beauty of Cape Town and the wilderness of Kenya, The African Journalist tells the tale of the African journalist today. Although a work of fiction, the story is inspired by true events. It's the story of Africa's perennial ethnicity problem, as witnessed recently, on an explosive scale, in Rwanda, Kenya and South Africa.
