Book Anodic Behavior of Titanium and Its Alloys in Sulfuric Acid

Download or read book Anodic Behavior of Titanium and Its Alloys in Sulfuric Acid written by Milton Levy and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electrochemical behavior of titanium and its alloys was studied in sulfuric acid media. Electronic potentiostatic anodic polarization techniques were employed. The anodic behavior of titanium was related to the parameters of temperature; acid concentration; chloride, iron, and copper additions to the electrolyte; yield strength level; microstructure of the alloy; and the use of passivating inhibitors. This book was released on 1966 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study was made to investigate the anodic polarization behavior of commercially-available titanium alloys in sulfuric acid solutions. Six materials were investigated at 22 plus or minus 1C using the potentiostatic technique. The electrolyte was 1, 5, and 10 normal concentrations of hydrogen-saturated, sulfuric acid. Anodic polarization curves (potential versus log current density) were obtained for all specimens in each of the three acid solutions. In addition, corrosion potential runs were determined for a 0.1N H2SO4 solution. All specimens display an active-to-passive transition. The alloy containing 13V-11Cr-3A1 was the only specimen investigated which exhibited transpassive behavior in the normal range of interest (E sub corr to +3.0 volts). None of the specimens exhibited Tafel behavior for anodic dissolution in the active region or in the transpassive region. The passive current density, ip, was less than 20 microamps/sq cm for all specimens, indicating the presence of a stable passive film on the specimen surface. The magnitude of the passive current density, ip, did not vary significantly with acid concentration. The passivation potential, Ep, became more noble (positive) with increasing acid concentration. The magnitude of the critical current density, icr, increased with increasing acid concentration. The corrosion potential was essentially constant for the 1, 5, and 10 normal environments. It was more noble by 0.2 to 0.4 volts in 0.1N acid concentrations for all specimens except the Ti-8A1-1Mo-1V alloy, for which it is more noble by almost 0.7 volts. (Author).

Book Anodic Polarization of Titanium and Its Alloys in Hydrochloric Acid

Download or read book Anodic Polarization of Titanium and Its Alloys in Hydrochloric Acid written by Milton Levy and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commercially pure titanium and the alloys studied exhibited active to passive transitions in HCl. Increasing the acid concentration increased the critical current for passivity and shifted the critical potential for passivity in the noble direction. Increasing the temperature served only to increase the critical current for passivity. Activation energies for the anodic polarization process were the right order of magnitude for a reaction controlled by reactivity at the metal surface. For the alpha-beta alloy 6Al-6V-2Sn the critical current for passivity increased as the ratio of amounts of beta-to-alpha phase decreased with increasing strength level. The addition of Fe(3+) and Cu(2+) (0.03 M) to the HCl facilitated passivation of the metal and its alloys. The maximum dissolution current densities for the metal and alloys in HCl were double those in H2SO4. Pitting of several of the alloys occurred in HCl but not in H2SO4. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this book are to give technical information about anodic pro tection, explain how economic analyses are made to determine whether or not it should be used, and describe some of the applications and equipment. Lim itations of the technique will be pointed out. Technological changes that have resulted in higher temperatures, pres sures, and velocities increase corrosion rates and markedly influence materials selection and design decisions. Continuous cycle systems impose increased demands on system reliability. New processes require more sophisticated equipment made of costlier metals which are often in short supply and subject to the vagaries of international commerce. The impact of continuing inflation influences decisions related to capital expenditures and maintenance costs. Some problems caused by these considerations can be solved, or solutions simplified, by the use of anodic protection. Technical and scientific information is presented on applications to industrial equipment, economics, design and installation, operation and maintenance, electrochemical principles, laboratory tests and procedures. A historical summary, patent list, glossary of terms, and a subject index are included. It is important to acknowledge that much of the information has been from the original work of others, including the publications of many friends.
