Download or read book Facing Freedom written by Daniel B. Thorp and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2017-12-28 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of African Americans in southern Appalachia after the Civil War has largely escaped the attention of scholars of both African Americans and the region. In Facing Freedom, Daniel Thorp relates the complex experience of an African American community in southern Appalachia as it negotiated a radically new world in the four decades following the Civil War. Drawing on extensive research in private collections as well as local, state, and federal records, Thorp narrates in intimate detail the experiences of black Appalachians as they struggled to establish autonomous families, improve their economic standing, operate black schools within a white-controlled school system, form independent black churches, and exercise expanded—if contested—roles as citizens and members of the body politic. Black out-migration increased markedly near the close of the nineteenth century, but the generation that transitioned from slavery to freedom in Montgomery County established the community institutions that would survive disenfranchisement and Jim Crow. Facing Freedom reveals the stories and strategies of those who pioneered these resilient bulwarks against the rising tide of racism.

Download or read book Intimate Reconstructions written by Catherine A. Jones and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2015-02-09 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Intimate Reconstructions, Catherine Jones considers how children shaped, and were shaped by, Virginia’s Reconstruction. Jones argues that questions of how to define, treat, reform, or protect children were never far from the surface of public debate and private concern in post–Civil War Virginia. Through careful examination of governmental, institutional, and private records, the author traces the unpredictable paths black and white children traveled through this tumultuous period. Putting children at the center of the narrative reveals the unevenness of the transitions that defined Virginia in the wake of the Civil War: from slavery to freedom, from war to peace, and from secession to a restored but fractured union. While some children emerged from the war under the protection of families, others navigated treacherous circumstances on their own. The reconfiguration of postwar households, and disputes over children’s roles within them, fueled broader debates over public obligations to protect all children. The reorganization of domestic life was a critical proving ground for Reconstruction. Freedpeople’s efforts to recover children strained against white Virginians’ efforts to retain privileges formerly undergirded by slavery. At the same time, orphaned children, particularly those who populated the streets of Virginia’s cities, prompted contentious debate over who had responsibility for their care, as well as rights to their labor. By revisiting conflicts over the practices of orphan asylums, apprenticeship, and adoption, Intimate Reconstructions demonstrates that race continued to shape children’s postwar lives in decisive ways. In private and public, children were at the heart of Virginians’ struggles over the meanings of emancipation and Confederate defeat.
Download or read book Dirt Don t Burn written by Larry Roeder and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dirt Don't Burn, the result of novel research by the Edwin Washington Project, is the story of how the Black community in Loudoun County, VA fought for public education from the end of the Civil War until the end of segregation in 1968. Over the course of nearly a century, various actors--parents, teachers, white allies, and others--pressed to ensure their children a better future, seeking to improve school facilities, increase access to education, and ensure that children's basic needs were met so that they could fully engage in learning. Enriching the narrative are personal stories, interviews, and analysis of records that were almost burned after having been lost for decades. The book also draws on archival NAACP files and records of educational philanthropies. In telling the story of one community, Dirt Don't Burn sheds new light on the larger history of segregation and equity--or lack thereof--in American education"--
