Download or read book Public Workers written by Joseph E. Slater and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-15 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the dawn of the twentieth century to the early 1960s, public-sector unions generally had no legal right to strike, bargain, or arbitrate, and government workers could be fired simply for joining a union. Public Workers is the first book to analyze why public-sector labor law evolved as it did, separate from and much more restrictive than private-sector labor law, and what effect this law had on public-sector unions, organized labor as a whole, and by extension all of American politics. Joseph E. Slater shows how public-sector unions survived, represented their members, and set the stage for the most remarkable growth of worker organization in American history. Slater examines the battles of public-sector unions in the workplace, courts, and political arena, from the infamous Boston police strike of 1919, to teachers in Seattle fighting a yellow-dog rule, to the BSEIU in the 1930s representing public-sector janitors, to the fate of the powerful Transit Workers Union after New York City purchased the subways, to the long struggle by AFSCME that produced the nation's first public-sector labor law in Wisconsin in 1959. Slater introduces readers to a determined and often-ignored segment of the union movement and expands our knowledge of working men and women, the institutions they formed, and the organizational obstacles they faced.

Book Social Education in the Twentieth Century

Download or read book Social Education in the Twentieth Century written by Christine A. Woyshner and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the birth of the republic, the aim of social education has been to prepare citizens for participation in democracy. In the twentieth century, theories about what constitutes good citizenship and who gets full citizenship in the civic polity changed dramatically. In this book, contributors with backgrounds in history of education, educational foundations, educational leadership, and social studies education consider how social education - inside and outside school - has responded to the needs of a society in which the nature and prerogatives of citizenship continue to be contentious issues.

Book Seattle s Women Teachers of the Interwar Years

Download or read book Seattle s Women Teachers of the Interwar Years written by Doris Hinson Pieroth and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Seattle's Women Teachers of the Interwar Years, Doris Pieroth describes the contributions of a remarkable group of women who dominated the Seattle public school system in the early years of the twentieth century and helped to produce well-educated citizens who were responsible for the widespread philanthropic, volunteer, and municipal activities that came to characterize the city. While most publications on the history of education have emphasized theory or administration, Pieroth focuses on individual teachers. Set against the backdrop of a developing city, the book provides vivid portraits of educated, strong, ambitious women making successful careers at a time when job opportunities for women were very limited. Pieroth interviewed as many of these women as she could find, and quotes from the interviews enhance her lively, well-written narrative. Using details drawn from local newspapers and school publications, she demonstrates that the influence of this cohort of women made modern Seattle the livable place that it remains today. Seattle's Women Teachers of the Interwar Years is a significant contribution to the history of Seattle and the region, to women's history, and to the history of education.
