Book Annual Report of the Entomological Society of the Province of Ontario

Download or read book Annual Report of the Entomological Society of the Province of Ontario written by Entomological Society of Ontario and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Report of the Entomological Society of the Province of Ontario: For the Year 1880 We may point with justifiable pride to the goodly pile of useful literature published by our Society during this period. Ten Annual Reports have been presented to the Government, which have been printed and widely disseminated as a part of the Report of the Commissioner of Agriculture for the Province of Ontario. These Reports of our Society have been full of matter of great importance to the agriculturist and the fruit grower, since most of the insect enemies to field crops and fruits have been systematically treated of in them, and the remedies best fitted to control or destroy the pests explained. The Reports have been much sought after and have no doubt accomplished much good. The Canadian Entomologist, the monthly organ of our Society, has now nearly completed its twelfth volume, the last ten of which have averaged about 250 pages octave, nearly all original matter. In these are recorded the observations of our members on all parts of the continent on insect life in its various forms. The life histories of a large number of species have been given in detail, and a vast amount of other material of much value in promoting the interests and advancing the science of Entomology presented. Our journal is held in high esteem abroad as well as at home, and was for some years the only journal devoted exclusively to Entomology on the continent of America. During the past year the Entomologist has contained many very valuable papers; among those especially worthy of mention are the contributions of Mr. W. H. Edwards on the life histories of the butterflies of North America. We are pleased to learn that he is still pursuing his investigations in this department, and that he will continue to give the readers of the Entomologist the details of his discoveries. Recognizing the important work our Society 1s doing, and with the object of further aiding our endeavours, the Ontario Government have added during the past year to our annual grant the sum of $250, which will enable us to illustrate more freely the articles to be published in our reports and in our journal, and to carry on the ordinary operations of our Society without embarrassment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Ninth Annual Report of the Entomological Society of Ontario, 1898 The Council has much pleasure in stating that entomological books can now be imported into Canada free of all Customs duty, and that this concession was Obtained through the representations of our Society. Early in the year, the President called the attention of the Council to the fact, that under item N O. 464 of the tariff, books upon the application of science to industries of all kinds could be imported free of duty, and suggested that an effort should be made to secure the placing in the same category books upon entomology, on account of the close connection between that science and the suc cessful prosecution of agriculture. This was unanimously approved by the Council and a Committee consisting of the President and Drs. Bethune and Fletcher, was appointed to prepare a memorial to the Government. The memorial having been approved, was signed by the President and Secretary, and was duly forwarded to the Finance Minister on the eve of the introduction of the budget, but owing to the pressure Of other business was held over until the prorogation of Parliament. It was referred to the Minister Of Cus toms, who requested the President to arnish more information, and to submit samples of books. On this being done, the Hon. Mr. Patterson, at once decided that such books should be admitted free under the item above referred to. The Society was represented at the meetings in Boston, in August last, of the Association of Economic Entomologists of North America, and the American tion for the Advancement of Science, by its President, Mr. Lyman and the Rev. Dr. Bethune. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Sixth Annual Report of the Entomological Society of Ontario, 1895 The next point in connection with agriculture that I wish to refer to is one that comes as a sort of rider to the last a companion to it, namely, the application of science to agriculture. Now, in certain quarters the moment you begin to talk about the science of agriculture and scientific farming an objection is raised and people say there is nothing scientific about it, it is all practice, and when you find a scientific farmer you find a farmer who does not make much progress.
