Download or read book Integrating Human Rights into Development Cooperation The Case of the Lom Convention written by Karin Arts and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-08-04 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human rights, democracy and governance concerns are prominent elements in the development cooperation policy of the European Community. The relations between the European Community (EC) and 71 developing countries in Africa, the Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) have proved to be a laboratory for developing ideas on these matters, for translating them into binding treaty norms, and for applying them in practice. The experiences gained in the ACP-EC relationship carry special value because they are the product of dialogue and joint decision-making between groups of developed and developing states. Therefore, 25 years of ACP-EC cooperation under the Lomé Convention provide a rich learning ground for anybody involved or interested in (the debate on) linking development cooperation to human rights and to human rights related concerns. This book explores the international law aspects of the subject. It first investigates the general international legal basis for linking development cooperation to human rights, democracy and good governance. Both the negative and positive ways of making such a linking (by punitive and supportive measures) are addressed. The book then delves into the evolution of Lomé treaty norms on the subject, and into the concrete human rights practices that took shape under them. It explores the contributions to and influence of both the EC and ACP states on those treaty provisions and practices. A comprehensive overview is provided of the support measures and sanctions resorted to in response to the human rights situation in ACP countries. The book assesses the overall experiences gained and presents a synthesis of factors that proved to be constraints or conducive to the efforts to integrate human rights fully into ACP-EC development cooperation. The insights gained could well inform similar efforts undertaken by others.

Download or read book Global Governance written by Lisa Martin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As economic, social and environmental connections among states have grown stronger and denser in the last decades, new levels and types of governance have emerged. The process of globalization, while not entirely new, has created new challenges for policymakers attempting to reap its benefits and manage its effects. This volume pulls together work on global governance that examines these challenges and looks at the patterns of governance that emerge. The work is organized into six sections. The first introduces concepts crucial to the analysis of global governance, including representation, efficiency, and hierarchy. The next two sections turn to specific patterns of governance in two realms, security and economic affairs respectively. The fourth section examines legal dimensions of governance. The fifth section concentrates on the impact of global governance on domestic politics, while the sixth looks at how concepts of norms and legitimacy structure our understanding of governance. Overall, this collection reveals a rich scholarly understanding of globalization, governance, and institutions that builds on deep theoretical roots while shedding light on major policy issues.
Download or read book Arbitration and Mediation in the ACP EU Relations written by Association for International Arbitration and published by Maklu. This book was released on 2008 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the product of a conference that provided an analysis of the initiatives seeking to integrate small and medium economies of the ACP (African, Caribbean, and Pacific group of nations) with the powerful forces of the greater markets, such as the European Union. Least developed nations tend to represent a vulnerable side in trade relations with greater economies, thus increasing a need to encourage the use of responsible trade practices and creating integration in a manner supporting the most vulnerable while guaranteeing the investments. Arbitration and mediation mechanisms play a decisive roll, providing an alternative to the imparity of justice administration in the different regions.
