Book excerpt: White women are one of the most influential demographics in America—we are the largest voting bloc, with purchasing power that exceeds anybody else's, and when we unify to demand change, we are a force to be reckoned with. Yet, so many of us sit idly on the sidelines, opting out of raising our hands to do, learn, and engage in ways that could make a difference. Why? White American women are no monolith. Yet, as Women's March national organizer Jenna Arnold has learned over the past few years criss-crossing the US in conversations with white women about their identity and role in the country, we do possess common characteristics—ones that get in the way of us becoming more engaged as citizens. We're so focused on checking off our to-do lists, or so afraid of getting it wrong, or so busy trying to avoid conflict, that we are actively avoiding the urgent conversations we need to have. We are confused about how we got here and unsure how to do better. Raising Our Hands is the reckoning cry for white women. It asks us to step up and join the new frontlines of the fight against complacency—in our homes, in our behaviors, and in our own minds. Consider Raising Our Hands your starting place, your "Intro to Being a White Woman in Today's World" freshman-year class. In these pages, Jenna peels back the history that's been kept out of textbooks and the cultural norms that are holding us back, so we can finally start really listening to marginalized voices and doing our part to promote progress. The American white woman is a powerful force—an essential participant—to mobilize alongside the rest of humanity on behalf of the world, and we can no longer make excuses for why we don't have time or don't know enough.

Book excerpt: I offer this workbook on reflections on race, diversity, and inclusion for clients ofHarriet Speaks. As a diversity and inclusion practitioner, I am also a trainer and a coach -coaching and training individuals and organizations to become the best versionsof themselves as a result of their conscious and intentional efforts to see thehumanity in others via anti-racism and anti-othering work.Thinking about deep-seated issues of racism, anti-blackness, and other 'isms' inthis way helps us get to the heart of the issue. It is axiomatic that when we engagein racism and other 'isms' we hurt others. But what must also be understood is thatin these moments, we also dim our own light, erode our humanity, and fall shortof who we can be. Therefore, this work is foundational to each of us becoming thebest version of ourselves. And that means changes in behavior are required.Lasting behavioral change comes when we focus not only on "what" we do, but"why" we do it. The "why" is a part of self-examination. Self-examination is bestdone outside of a group. Group training and discussions can prompt thinking, butlet's face it: there are more things in group D&I trainings that go unsaid becauseof the fear of judgment; and often, what goes unsaid goes unexamined. If we are committed to changing ourselves, our communities, and our organizationsas it relates to race and other issues of diversity, we must learn about ourselvesin addition to learning from others. Self-reflection and self-examination help usdiscover our shadows and our stories; it can lead to true progress on our journeyto creating a more just society.Yet, most people do not start their race and inclusion journey within. They beginwith external inquiries: "What concepts/terms should I learn? Which books shouldI read?" That type of learning matters, but it merely tells you what someone elsethinks - without providing an opportunity to unpack and consider what you think.Real and lasting change begins within, I needed a tool to help my clients engage.
