Book Annual Attendance Demand in Minor League Baseball

Download or read book Annual Attendance Demand in Minor League Baseball written by Nola Agha and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considerable time has been spent on identifying the demand determinants in major league sports. Much less attention has focused on minor league baseball despite its unique business structure: with free inputs provided by strategic alliance partners, minor league teams rely more heavily on their home stadiums, promotions, local brand, and partnerships with Major League clubs to generate demand. This conceptual research first defines the characteristics of minor league baseball that make it unique from demand in Major League Baseball. Next, it discusses theoretical demand determinants and provides a review of empirical results. It concludes by identifying the problems in current MiLB demand modelling and offers suggestions for improvements and future research.

Book Stadium Construction and Minor League Baseball Attendance

Download or read book Stadium Construction and Minor League Baseball Attendance written by Seth R. Gitter and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The established literature shows that new stadium construction for major league baseball (MLB) teams can increase attendance, but there are limited studies at the minor league level. We use a data set encompassing all A, AA, and AAA minor league baseball teams from 1992 to 2006 to estimate the impact of stadium construction on minor league attendance. This data set includes almost 200 teams, over half of which constructed a new stadium during the 15-year observation period. Over a 10-year period our results show that new stadiums increase attendance by 1.2 million fans at the AAA level, 0.4 million at the AA and high A level, and 0.2 million at short season low A. A cost benefit analysis suggests that increased ticket sales do not offset the stadium costs, in line with previous works on MLB.

Book excerpt: In 2022, Major League Baseball changed its rules to include the designated hitter position in both the American and National Leagues. Up until that year, designated hitters were only used by American League teams. This rule change creates an environment where half of a major sports league is given a shock to offensive production. We analyze the demand for offense by investigating how the designated hitter affects attendance and offensive production for National League teams. Our results contribute to a rich literature that analyzes how offense affects fan participation, as we provide the first evidence using causal inference that offense increases fan attendance. Using a difference-in-differences framework, we show that the offense created by a designated hitter increases attendance by about 3.5-7.9% at National League home games as a result of the rule change. Given a point estimate increase in total offense of about 4.85%, we find evidence that attendance is likely elastic with respect to total offense.

Book Factors Affecting Spectators Decision in Attending Minor League Baseball Home Games

Download or read book Factors Affecting Spectators Decision in Attending Minor League Baseball Home Games written by Mohanned S. Shobian and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many reasons as to why fans attend home game events. This study examined what motivates individuals to attend Lake County Captains Baseball events. Managers have some influence over many of the factors that affect attendance at the minor league baseball (MiLB) games such as budgeting, concessions, cleanliness or attractiveness of the stadium, and promotional activities. However, there are some factors that managers cannot control (e.g., weather and city population). Two hundred Lake County Captains fans participated in this study. Participants completed a two-sided survey questionnaire that has six different dimensions (29 items): Residual Preferences (6 items), Economics (5 items), Social Aspects (4 items), Enjoyment (5 items), Team Identification (4 items) and Team Affiliation (5 items). The survey questions are based on a 5-point Likert Scale, measuring factors that affect attendance from 0́−strongly disagree,0́+ 0́−neutral,0́+ to 0́−strongly agree.0́+ The survey is also designed using ordinal and nominal scales for the demographic information of the participants in the survey. An exploratory factor analysis was used to examine the factor structure and items of the survey. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze all the demographic factors and items on the survey. Factorial MANOVAs were used to examine the mean vector scores of perfectionisms between the demographics and the seven factors. Significant age differences were found in Residual Preference-Environment and Team-Affiliation based on attendance, whereas significant annual household income differences were found in Economics and Enjoyment based on attendance. Likewise, significant education levels differences were found in Team-Affiliation. The spectators agreed that all factors played a huge role in motivating them to attend the Lake County Captains Minor League Baseball. Age, household income, and education levels had the most significant effects on attendance. When arranging a plan to increase attendance, it is essential to focus on the 25-36 age group, individuals who earned $40,000-$59,000 a year, and participants who obtained bachelor0́9s and master0́9s degrees, the largest groups in attendance at the game. It appears that the primary motivating factors for the adolescents would be socialization and enjoyment
