In words which quaintly represent to-day my own feelings, John Redman expressed his sense of the honor then conferred upon him and of the responsibility created by such an audience; for, said he, when I look around me I see so many gentlemen of character for learning, ingenuity, and integrity in the profession and practice of physick, and some whose talents have early called them forth into publick notice, and offices of dignity in the medical line, and who have conducted therein for many years so much to their own reputation, and to the advancement and satisfaction of their pupils and of their fellow-citizens. At the close of his address he confesses that his mind has taken a more serious turn, and says, I think it is very becoming in us at the commencement of this our Institution, to acknowledge the Sn preme Being to be our sovereign lord and ruler, and thus goes on into a simple and straightforward prayer, that through all the days of this College, they who sat about and all who are to come publickly and privately serve their generation faithfully, according to God's will, that they may find rewards beyond the grave. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Physicians of Philadelphia and Its Vicinity: An Address at the First Annual Meeting of the Association of Resident Physicians of the Pennsylvania Hospital, December 17th, 1885 The address which follows is one of three discourses delivered by members of the Association of Resident Physicians of the Pennsylvania Hospital, at its first annual meeting. The occasion was one which did not permit any very extended remarks, and a brief sketch only was given by the writer, of the physicians of Philadelphia who practised medicine here in its first two decades. It was a pleasing surprise to him to find how closely these men were linked, by their descendants, with the Pennsylvania Hospital from its inception to the present time. As it is passing through the press, another pleasing surprise presents itself in the fact, which had escaped his notice, that all of the Philadelphia physicians of that time were natives of Wales; a very significant fact, inasmuch as the Welsh immigrants constituted but a part of the population of the new city. Two of the writer's friends have recently shown how large has been the influence of the German life and thought in the United States. The writer, himself of Welsh descent, hopes that some one having more leisure, and more ability than he has, will ere long give the subject the consideration it deserves, and show how much as Philadelphians we owe in medicine, in law, and in religion to our Cymric ancestors. A few foot-notes have been added, but in other respects the address is as it was delivered at the hospital. Book excerpt: This work, composed originally for a lay audience and for popular consumption, will be to the aspiring medical student and the hardworking practitioner a lift into the blue, an inspiring vista or "Pisgah-sight" of the evolution of medicine, a realization of what devotion, perseverance, valor and ability on the part of physicians have contributed to this progress, and of the creditable part which our profession has played in the general development of science. The manuscript of Sir William Osler's lectures on the "Evolution of Modern Medicine," delivered at Yale University in April, 1913, on the Silliman Foundation, was immediately turned in to the Yale University Press for publication. Duly set in type, proofs in galley form had been submitted to him and despite countless interruptions he had already corrected and revised a number of the galleys when the great war came. But with the war on, he threw himself with energy and devotion into the military and public duties which devolved upon him and so never completed his proof-reading and intended alterations. The careful corrections which Sir William made in the earlier galleys show that the lectures were dictated, in the first instance, as loose memoranda for oral delivery rather than as finished compositions for the eye, while maintaining throughout the logical continuity and the engaging con moto which were so characteristic of his literary style. In revising the lectures for publication, therefore, the editors have merely endeavored to carry out, with care and befitting reverence, the indications supplied in the earlier galleys by Sir William himself. In supplying dates and references which were lacking, his preferences as to editions and readings have been borne in mind. The slight alterations made, the adaptation of the text to the eye, detract nothing from the original freshness of the work.
