Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annotations on the Epistles of Paul: To the Romans and I. Corinthians, Chaps; I. IV The epistle discusses, therefore, the principles that underly this thought of the world-embracing influence of the church at Rome. The thoughts here recorded are not new to the Apostle. They are the mature product of his most profound reflections in his solitary journeys and voyages, and in his efforts to bring the knowledge of Christ to men of all nationalities and of all classes and conditions of life. As at Rome all meet, so at the very idea of Rome, these thoughts are focussed, and flow forth in a continuous discourse by an inner necessity of his nature, impelled and guided by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Starting with the statement of the design of his Apostleship to bring all the nations into obedience to the faith, ch. I 5, he expounds the theme of the universality OF the grace OF god IN christ. After an Introduction (ch. I 1 the theme is announced, and the argument proceeds: I. All alike under condemnation (1 18 - 3 II. All alike are offered Justification by Faith (3 21-5 III. The Universality of grace, no apology for sin (6 12 - 8 IV. Relation of this doctrine to Judaism (9 1 - 11 V. Practical Exhortations (12 1 - 15 VI. Personal Matters, 15 14 - 16 27. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annotations on the Epistles of Paul to the Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Thessalonians The church addressed. There are some doubts whether this epistle was addressed to the Church at Ephesus. The absence of personal references and of allusions to the previous intimate relations between Paul and that Church is remarkable. The doubts suggested by this circumstance are increased by the omission of the words for in Ephesus (i I) in several of the best manuscripts of the New Testament; for example, the Vatican and the Sinaitic. This omission is confirmed by certain statements of early writers. Tertullian is authority for the statement that the heretic Marcion declared the letter to be addressed to the Laodiceans. The writings of Origen and of Basil contain statements which indicate that they knew of texts which omitted the words for in Ephesus. Nevertheless these suggestions of doubt are only sporadic, and the large preponderance of historical proof both in the form of textual evidence and ancient testi mony is in favor of Ephesus as the destination of the epistle. Book Paul the Ancient Letter Writer

Download or read book Paul the Ancient Letter Writer written by Jeffrey A. D. Weima and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This clear and user-friendly introduction to the interpretive method called "epistolary analysis" shows how focusing on the form and function of Paul's letters yields valuable insights into the apostle's purpose and meaning. The author helps readers interpret Paul's letters properly by paying close attention to the apostle's use of ancient letter-writing conventions. Paul is an extremely skilled letter writer who deliberately adapts or expands traditional epistolary forms so that his persuasive purposes are enhanced. This is an ideal supplemental textbook for courses on Paul or the New Testament. It contains numerous analyses of key Pauline texts, including a final chapter analyzing the apostle's Letter to Philemon as a "test case" to demonstrate the benefits of this interpretive approach.

Book Annotations on Galatians and Ephesians

Download or read book Annotations on Galatians and Ephesians written by Desiderius Erasmus and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 58 in the Collected Works of Erasmus series contains, for the first time, the English translation of Erasmus' Annotations on Paul's Epistles to the Galatians and Ephesians. Erasmus' Annotations began as marginal comments in his own copy of the New Testament and were subsequently published in 1516 as a supplement to the Novum Instrumentum. His annotations were intended to justify his changes based on the Greek text. In each successive edition, published between 1516 and 1535, the Annotations grew in size and scope providing Erasmus with the opportunity to defend his translations in the face of growing criticism from orthodox Catholic theologians. This volume notes the editorial changes made in the five editions and also provides the reader with information about the patristic, medieval and contemporary sources consulted by Erasmus, and about the evolving relations with contemporary critics. The Annotations played a pivotal role in the development of sixteenth-century biblical exegesis and mark a significant stage in the evolution of humanist biblical scholarship.
