Book Annotated Catalogue of the Carabid Beetles of the Republic of Macedonia Coleoptera

Download or read book Annotated Catalogue of the Carabid Beetles of the Republic of Macedonia Coleoptera written by Slavčo Hristovski and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The catalogue of the ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) of the Republic of Macedonia is the result of our permanent investigation during 15 years. It is based on the critical review of the data in 255 scientific publications and the revision of the collections deposited in the museums in Macedonia (Skopje and Struga), other European countries (Berlin, Budapest, Vienna, Sofia) and the first author's private collection. For all of the species and subspecies we have presented the known literature references, precise data for the studied material and overall distribution in the Republic of Macedonia. The study of the material resulted in new country records of 10 genera, 101 species and 25 subspecies. First detailed records are provided for another 47 species and subspecies, and additional material was studied of 482 species and subspecies. Type material of 18 species and subspecies was also examined. Thirteen species and one subspecies were rejected from the list of Macedonian ground beetles. Six more species are treated as questionable and were not included in the present list. As a result, the presence of 571 species and 234 subspecies (626 taxa in total) in Macedonia is confirmed. These taxa are arranged in 104 genera, 31 subtribes, 35 tribes and 13 subfamilies. The most numerous in term of the species are the genera Bembidion (60), Harpalus (48) and Amara (46), as well as Pterostichus (26), Ophonus (19), Carabus (16), Trechus(16), Brachinus (16) and Dyschirius (15).

Book Ecology and conservation of the Dutch ground beetle fauna

Download or read book Ecology and conservation of the Dutch ground beetle fauna written by Hans Turin and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-14 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decades, large amounts of data about carabids have been collected in the Netherlands, initially for the purpose of creating distribution maps for the country. In addition to information from collections and faunistic publications, a significant amount of data came from ecological studies using pitfall traps. Because of the rich tradition of carabidological research in the Netherlands, an exceptionally large database of these pitfall data is available. The database is a mix of approximately 1,500 short-term samples and circa 4,400 so-called 'year-samples', for which pitfalls were functional during the whole activity period of ground beetles in spring and autumn. These year-samples came from 2,850 sites, covering the period of 1953-2018, and represent all habitats on the Dutch landscape. These data offer an unusual view of the presence and activity of this common insect family. The data gathered from pitfall trapping is summarised and provides a fresh integrated perspective about the Dutch ground beetle fauna. The characteristic species composition of 17 habitat groups is described in detail. Over 320 species present in the database have been classified into six main groups, according to their patterns of habitat use. Both the classification of habitats and associated species have been tested and used in various analyses in the book. Two chapters give special attention to changes in the Dutch fauna over the past 66 years by means of extensive trend analysis and relate this understanding to nature conservation. The book provides an extension and update for Turin's (2000) atlas. The Dutch carabid fauna is discussed considering relevant literature but uses predominantly European studies to put the faunal patterns in broader context. This book presents the story of Dutch ground beetles and illustrates the contribution of pitfall trapping to our understanding of the ecology of this fascinating and unusually well-studied group of beetles.

Book Carabidae Insecta Coleoptera

Download or read book Carabidae Insecta Coleoptera written by André Larochelle and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The family Carabidae (ground-beetles, including tiger beetles) is composed of over 34,000 species distributed among 1,927 genera worldwide. Carabids occupy most land habitats on nearly all continents. Most ground-beetles, in temperate climates at least, live at the surface of the ground, while some species dwell in the soil, in caves, or on vegetation. They are mostly active at night and prey on a wide range of small animals such as other insects and spiders; some species are active during the day and feed on plant tissue. Most are recognisable alive by a peculiar way of running on the ground. Compared with larger or warmer regions of the world, the New Zealand fauna may appear relatively small, but New Zealand is a biodiversity 'hot-spot' with over fifty genera (about 60% of fauna) found nowhere else in the world. As a family, Carabidae are sensitive to their environment and are commonly used as biological indicators. They can also be used to control pest insects (e.g., caterpillars) and in the future, ground-beetles may become more commonly used in biological control. In New Zealand, conservation biologists have listed many, often large-sized carabids, as rare or threatened and worthy of protection. This new Fauna of New Zealand contribution partly updates Larochelle & Lariviere's Catalogue (FNZ 43) of 2001. Aimed at specialists and non-specialists, it should greatly facilitate identification and information gathering. Its purpose is to provide an overview of 134 species and subspecies belonging to the tribes Cicindelini, Pamborini, Amarotypini, Migadopini, Clivinini, Moriomorphini, and Trechini. Habitus colour photos and distribution maps are included for all taxa. Two genera and 16 species are described as new.
