Book The Splendour of Himalayan Art and Culture

Download or read book The Splendour of Himalayan Art and Culture written by Aśoka Jeratha and published by Indus Publishing. This book was released on 1995 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Himalayas are a source of inspiration and challenge to the researchers, intellectuals and adventurers. The lofty mountains with snow-clad peaks and lush green forests fascinate one and all. This work on the art and culture of people of the Himalayan region is fourth in sequence by the author. After Folk Art of Duggar; Ripples in the Himalayas; and Rajat Shikhron Ke Rupehle Swar, this work completes the first phase of studies of Himalayan culture. Earlier Kumaon, Garhwal, Kashmir and Ladakh Himalayas and their ranges were covered in detail. With the inclusion of Dhauladhar ranges and nearby surroundings of Kangra, Palampur, Baijnath, Mandi, Kullu, Manali, Lahaul & Spiti, Kinnaur and upper regions of Shimla in this book, it completes the studies of western Himalayas. The author has visited himself in most of these areas and collected the data so that first hand information can be provided to the readers. In a way it is a first endeavour in this field wherein the people and the land are discussed collectively for the first time. However, individual tribes of Himachal Pradesh do find their place in sociological studies done in the field, but we do not find a comparative study for which an objective effort has been made in this book for the benefit of readers and art historians alike. The book covers the art, architecture and cultural aspects of Himachal Pradesh. References have also been made to Basohli, Jammu, Manket, etc. as the Pahari art of minature paintings had its own legacy in these erstwhile kingdoms." -- Cover description.

Book Muslim Communities and Cultures of the Himalayas

Download or read book Muslim Communities and Cultures of the Himalayas written by Jacqueline Fewkes and published by Routledge South Asian Religion Series. This book was released on 2022-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores individual perspectives and specific iterations of Muslim community, Muslim practice and experience of Islam in the Himalayan region as well as the concept of the general Islamic community the Ummah. A multidisciplinary analysis of Muslim communities and historical and contemporary Islamicate traditions, the book shows how Muslims understand and mobilize regional identities and religious expressions. Moreover, it assesses regional interactions, the ways in which institutions shape Muslim practices in specific areas and investigates the notion of the Himalayas as an Islamic space. The book suggests that the regional focus on the Himalayas provides a site of both geographic and cultural crossroads where Muslim community is simultaneously constituted at multiple social levels. As a result, chapters document a wide range of local, national, and global interests while maintaining a focus on individual perspectives, moments in time, and localized experiences. This book draws attention to the cultural, social, artistic, and political diversity of the Himalaya beyond the better-understood and frequently documented religio-cultural expressions of the region. It will be of interest to academics in the fields of anthropology, geography, history, religious studies, Asian Studies, and Islamic Studies

Book Culture and the Environment in the Himalaya

Download or read book Culture and the Environment in the Himalaya written by Arjun Guneratne and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-24 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with human-environment relations in the Himalaya. It explores how different populations and communities in the region understand or conceive of the concept of environment, how their concepts vary across lines of gender, class, age, status, and what this implies for policy makers in the fields of environmental conservation and development. The chapters in this book analyse the symbolic schema that shape human-environment relations, whether that of scientists studying the Himalayan environment, public officials crafting policy about it, or people making a living from their engagement with it, and the way that natural phenomena themselves shape human perception of the world. A new approach to the study of the environment in South Asia, this book introduces the new thinking in environmental anthropology and geography into the study of the Himalaya and uses Himalayan ethnography to interrogate and critique contemporary theorizing about the environment.

It has a rich diversity – natural and cultural, and diversity in all walks of life. Most of its uniqueness is unknown because of its remoteness. Even, the native people are not aware of them. This book aims to describe the uniqueness of the Central Himalaya in terms of its natural and cultural diversity in detail. Supported by original figures and primary data, this book is empirically tested. It is mainly based on observation and participation and the use of a qualitative approach. Book Art and Culture of Himalaya

Download or read book Art and Culture of Himalaya written by Kuldip Singh Gulia and published by . This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of factors are responsible for disappearance of different art forms from the Himalayan region. The main among them are social, economical and ecological ones. The cultural invasion from outside is also one of them. During Mughal, Sikh and Rajput periods, the Himalayan art and culture was at its zenith. But during the British period, it took a nosedive. The British were rather pragmatic and matter of factly. They wasted no efforts on vain and inane aesthetics even in the building activities. They raised buildings rather for public schools, hospitals and other public utilities only. This volume describes the social constitution, its polyandrous marriage systems and peculiar customs and rituals, paintings, sculptures and religious practices of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan. This book is a must read for the serious students of art, culture, sociology and anthropology.
