Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wiley-Interscience Series in Discrete Mathematics and Optimization Advisory Editors Ronald L. Graham Jan Karel Lenstra Robert E. Tarjan Discrete Mathematics and Optimization involves the study of finite structures and is one of the fastest growing areas in mathematics today. The level and depth of recent advances in the area and the wide applicability of its evolving techniques point to the rapidity with which the field is moving and presage the ever-increasing interaction between it and computer science. The Series provides a broad coverage of discrete mathematics and optimization, ranging over such fields as combinatorics, graph theory, enumeration, mathematical programming and the analysis of algorithms, and including such topics as Ramsey theory, transversal theory, block designs, finite geometries, Polya theory, graph and matroid algorithms, network flows, polyhedral combinatorics and computational complexity. The Wiley-Interscience Series in Discrete Mathematics and Optimization will be a substantial part of the record in this extraordinary development. Recent titles in the Series: Local Search in Combinatorial Optimization Edited by Emile H. L. Aarts Philips Research Laboratories, Eindhoven and Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven Jan Karel Lenstra Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven and CWI Amsterdam In the past three decades local search has grown from a simple heuristic idea into a mature field of research in combinatorial optimization. Local search is still the method of choice for NP-hard problems as it provides a robust approach for obtaining high-quality solutions to problems of a realistic size in a reasonable time. This area of discrete mathematics is of great practical use and is attracting ever-increasing attention. The contributions to this book cover local search and its variants from both a theoretical and practical point of view, each with a chapter written by leading authorities on that particular aspect. Chapters 1 to 7 deal with the theory of local search and describe the principal search strategies such as simulated annealing, tabu search, genetic algorithms and neural networks. The remaining chapters present a wealth of results on applications of local search to problems in management science and engineering, including the traveling salesman problem, vehicle routing, machine scheduling, VLSI design and code design. This book is an important reference volume and an invaluable source of inspiration for advanced students and researchers in discrete mathematics, computer science, operations research, industrial engineering and management science.

Book Combinatorial Optimization

Download or read book Combinatorial Optimization written by Bernhard Korte and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive textbook on combinatorial optimization places special emphasis on theoretical results and algorithms with provably good performance, in contrast to heuristics. It is based on numerous courses on combinatorial optimization and specialized topics, mostly at graduate level. This book reviews the fundamentals, covers the classical topics (paths, flows, matching, matroids, NP-completeness, approximation algorithms) in detail, and proceeds to advanced and recent topics, some of which have not appeared in a textbook before. Throughout, it contains complete but concise proofs, and also provides numerous exercises and references. This sixth edition has again been updated, revised, and significantly extended. Among other additions, there are new sections on shallow-light trees, submodular function maximization, smoothed analysis of the knapsack problem, the (ln 4+ɛ)-approximation for Steiner trees, and the VPN theorem. Thus, this book continues to represent the state of the art of combinatorial optimization.

Book Multiple Criteria Optimization

Download or read book Multiple Criteria Optimization written by Xavier Gandibleux and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The generalized area of multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) can be defined as the body of methods and procedures by which the concern for multiple conflicting criteria can be formally incorporated into the analytical process. MCDM consists mostly of two branches, multiple criteria optimization and multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA). While MCDA is typically concerned with multiple criteria problems that have a small number of alternatives often in an environment of uncertainty (location of an airport, type of drug rehabilitation program), multiple criteria optimization is typically directed at problems formulated within a mathematical programming framework, but with a stack of objectives instead of just one (river basin management, engineering component design, product distribution). It is about the most modern treatment of multiple criteria optimization that this book is concerned. I look at this book as a nicely organized and well-rounded presentation of what I view as ”new wave” topics in multiple criteria optimization. Looking back to the origins of MCDM, most people agree that it was not until about the early 1970s that multiple criteria optimization c- gealed as a field. At this time, and for about the following fifteen years, the focus was on theories of multiple objective linear programming that subsume conventional (single criterion) linear programming, algorithms for characterizing the efficient set, theoretical vector-maximum dev- opments, and interactive procedures.

Book Data Correcting Approaches in Combinatorial Optimization

Download or read book Data Correcting Approaches in Combinatorial Optimization written by Boris I. Goldengorin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-10 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data Correcting Approaches in Combinatorial Optimization focuses on algorithmic applications of the well known polynomially solvable special cases of computationally intractable problems. The purpose of this text is to design practically efficient algorithms for solving wide classes of combinatorial optimization problems. Researches, students and engineers will benefit from new bounds and branching rules in development efficient branch-and-bound type computational algorithms. This book examines applications for solving the Traveling Salesman Problem and its variations, Maximum Weight Independent Set Problem, Different Classes of Allocation and Cluster Analysis as well as some classes of Scheduling Problems. Data Correcting Algorithms in Combinatorial Optimization introduces the data correcting approach to algorithms which provide an answer to the following questions: how to construct a bound to the original intractable problem and find which element of the corrected instance one should branch such that the total size of search tree will be minimized. The PC time needed for solving intractable problems will be adjusted with the requirements for solving real world problems.

Book Paradigms of Combinatorial Optimization

Download or read book Paradigms of Combinatorial Optimization written by Vangelis Th. Paschos and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-08-08 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combinatorial optimization is a multidisciplinary scientific area, lying in the interface of three major scientific domains: mathematics, theoretical computer science and management. These topics also deal with fundamental notions and approaches as with several classical applications of combinatorial optimization. Concepts of Combinatorial Optimization, is divided into three parts: - On the complexity of combinatorial optimization problems, presenting basics about worst-case and randomized complexity; - Classical solution methods, presenting the two most-known methods for solving hard combinatorial optimization problems, that are Branch-and-Bound and Dynamic Programming; - Elements from mathematical programming, presenting fundamentals from mathematical programming based methods that are in the heart of Operations Research since the origins of this field.

Book Probability Theory and Combinatorial Optimization

Download or read book Probability Theory and Combinatorial Optimization written by J. Michael Steele and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides an introduction to the state of the art of the probability theory that is most directly applicable to combinatorial optimization. The questions that receive the most attention are those that deal with discrete optimization problems for points in Euclidean space, such as the minimum spanning tree, the traveling-salesman tour, and minimal-length matchings. Still, there are several nongeometric optimization problems that receive full treatment, and these include the problems of the longest common subsequence and the longest increasing subsequence. The philosophy that guides the exposition is that analysis of concrete problems is the most effective way to explain even the most general methods or abstract principles. There are three fundamental probabilistic themes that are examined through our concrete investigations. First, there is a systematic exploitation of martingales. The second theme that is explored is the systematic use of subadditivity of several flavors, ranging from the naïve subadditivity of real sequences to the subtler subadditivity of stochastic processes. The third and deepest theme developed here concerns the application of Talagrand's isoperimetric theory of concentration inequalities.
