Download or read book Songs of the Sons and Daughters of Buddha written by and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lyrical translation of an inspired selection of verses from the earliest Buddhist monks and nuns. More than two thousand years ago, the earliest disciples of the Buddha put into verse their experiences on the spiritual journey--from their daily struggles to their spiritual realizations. Over time the verses were collected to form the Theragatha and Therigatha, the "Verses of Elder Monks" and "Verses of Elder Nuns" respectively. In Songs of the Sons and Daughters of the Buddha, renowned poets Andrew Schelling and Anne Waldman have translated the most poignant poems in these collections, bringing forth the visceral, immediate qualities that are often lost in more scholarly renditions. These selections reveal the fears, loves, mishaps, expectations, and joys of the early monks and nuns, when, struck by wild insight, they cried out the anguish or solace they knew in their lives.

Download or read book Where the Moose Slept written by Atwood Cutting and published by Gatekeeper Press. This book was released on 2017-05 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The setting is deep in a field of wildflowers, far from any city. It is during the Alaska oil boom, and two anachronistic romantics have heeded the call of the wild. Kate has come from Hawaii, ‘to see a winter.’ Inspired by the cultural revolution of the sixties, she dreams of a Utopia. Tim, a soldier returning from Vietnam, simply wants to build a log home and live life the way he wishes. They elope. Their epic wilderness experiment takes Emerson’s vision of Transcendentalism through self-reliance, and puts meat on it, while the outcome of this odyssey calls to mind the reports of “seeing the elephant” by many who traveled west by covered wagon in the mid-19th century. This is Historical Fiction. Photographs and letters written from the pioneer wife to her mother detailing the adventurous newlyweds’ pre-technological lifestyle were treasured, and eventually handed down to Atwood Cutting by her grandmother. The nonfiction narrative is likely to evoke disbelief in young adults and fond memories in seniors, while nature lovers and DIY souls will lap up the innovative transportation and construction solutions described. If the wilderness calls your name, and you dream of running toward its perfection but can’t clear your schedule, then you are the right reader for this trilogy about pioneering before there were cellphones.

Download or read book Chinnamast written by Elisabeth Anne Benard and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first monograph which examines the rare Buddhist and Hindu Tantric goddess, Chinnamasta, her rituals, her names and forms (namarupa) and their symbolism by comparing and contra-sting her sadhanas (spiritual practices) in Hinduism and Buddh-ism. The entire Hindu Chinnamastatantra section from the Sakta Pramoda, the Buddhist Chinnamunda Vajra-varahisadhana and theTrikayavajrayoginstuti are translated for the first time into English. Since Chinnamasta is a rare goddess, her texts were not popularized or made fashionable according to the dictates of a particular group at a particular time. The earliest extant texts dated from the ninth and tenth centuries a time when Hindu and Buddhist Tantras were developing under common influences in the same place in India. Having such texts about Chinnamasta Chinnamunda from these centuries, one can begin to understand the mutuality of a general Tantric tradition and the exclusivity of a particular Hindu or Buddhist Tantric tradition. Hence the study not only examines Chinnamasta, but also attempts to under-stand what is a Tantric tradition.
