Book excerpt: The swelling of uranium and of a few selected uranium alloys on post-irradiation annealing was investigated by utilizing density measurements in conjunction with the observation of pores in the microstructures of annealed specimens. Specimens were irradiated to about 0.3 at.% burnup in a constrained condition at approximately 275 deg C and were subsequently pulse annealed. The amount of swelling was found to be less than 1% for U specimens that were pulse annealed up to 75 hr at temperatures below 550 deg C; the amount of swelling, however, increased considerably on annealing at temperatures between 550 and 650 deg C. Specimens pulse annealed up to 75 hr at 618 deg C decreased in density by approximately 18%. The swelling was accompanied by the formation of bubbles on grain boundaries in recrystallized regions. The observations suggest that recrystallization is a necessary prerequisite for pronounced swelling in the alpha phase.

Book excerpt: Two kinds of hot-pressed B4C specimens were irradiated with 15MeV He+ from 4.3x1014 to 1.13x1016ion/cm2 at 400-760 °C, and with 100keV He+ from 1.0x1013 to 2.0x1017ion/cm2 at room temperature. After ion irradiation, the microstructure of specimens was analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The ion-irradiation by 15MeV helium ions produced a radiation-enhanced precipitation with Fe-rich composition and the radiation-induced amorphization in the B4C matrix, but the irradiation by 100keV helium did not make amorphization. This result suggests that the inelastic scattering (electron excitation), rather than elastic scattering, plays an important role in amorphization of B4C. The annealing of ion irradiated B4C above 1000°C indicated incineration of precipitated crystals and a formation of a small numbers of helium bubbles.

Book excerpt: This volume brings together 47 papers from scientists involved in the fabrication of new nuclear fuels, in basic research of nuclear materials, their application and technology as well as in computer codes and modelling of fuel behaviour. The main emphasis is on progress in the development of non-oxide fuels besides reporting advances in the more conventional oxide fuels. The two currently performed large reactor safety programmes CORA and PHEBUS-FP are described in invited lectures. The contributions review basic property measurements, as well as the present state of fuel performance modelling. The performance of today's nuclear fuel, hence UO2, at high burnup is also reviewed with particular emphasis on the recently observed phenomenon of grain subdivision in the cold part of the oxide fuel at high burnup, the so-called "rim" effect. Similar phenomena can be simulated by ion implantation in order to better elucidate the underlying mechanism and reviews on high resolution electron microscopy provide further information. The papers will provide a useful treatise of views, ideas and new results for all those scientists and engineers involved in the specific questions of current nuclear waste management.
