These architects, partners since 1998, develop projects which, although often included in a common typology for youth offices in Belgium (Architecture Annex, interior design, the "behind the facade"), invoke ambitious means that only architects have. Anne and Vincent Pierret Ledroit conducting a thorough reflection on the fun of "live" on the testing of space by the user. They transcend the issues of functionality and use to create unique spaces and often ambiguous. They stage space as the material of plastic research, exploiting it masterfully combining the classic "discovery," "unbalanced," "tension," Dynamic "shrinkage" and other "expansions".

Book Belgique nouvelles architectures

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Nonnegative Matrix Factorization

Download or read book Nonnegative Matrix Factorization written by Nicolas Gillis and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2020-12-18 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) in its modern form has become a standard tool in the analysis of high-dimensional data sets. This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the most important aspects of the NMF problem and is the first to detail its theoretical aspects, including geometric interpretation, nonnegative rank, complexity, and uniqueness. It explains why understanding these theoretical insights is key to using this computational tool effectively and meaningfully. Nonnegative Matrix Factorization is accessible to a wide audience and is ideal for anyone interested in the workings of NMF. It discusses some new results on the nonnegative rank and the identifiability of NMF and makes available MATLAB codes for readers to run the numerical examples presented in the book. Graduate students starting to work on NMF and researchers interested in better understanding the NMF problem and how they can use it will find this book useful. It can be used in advanced undergraduate and graduate-level courses on numerical linear algebra and on advanced topics in numerical linear algebra and requires only a basic knowledge of linear algebra and optimization.

Book Car Safety Wars

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael R. Lemov
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield

Download or read book Car Safety Wars written by Michael R. Lemov and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-03-19 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Car Safety Wars is a gripping history of the hundred-year struggle to improve the safety of American automobiles and save lives on the highways. Described as the “equivalent of war” by the Supreme Court, the battle involved the automobile industry, unsung and long-forgotten safety heroes, at least six US Presidents, a reluctant Congress, new auto technologies, and, most of all, the mindset of the American public: would they demand and be willing to pay for safer cars? The “Car Safety Wars” were at first won by consumers and safety advocates. The major victory was the enactment in 1966 of a ground breaking federal safety law. The safety act was pushed through Congress over the bitter objections of car manufacturers by a major scandal involving General Motors, its private detectives, Ralph Nader, and a gutty cigar-chomping old politician. The act is a success story for government safety regulation. It has cut highway death and injury rates by over seventy percent in the years since its enactment, saving more than two million lives and billions of taxpayer dollars. But the car safety wars have never ended. GM has recently been charged with covering up deadly defects resulting in multiple ignition switch shut offs. Toyota has been fined for not reporting fatal unintended acceleration in many models. Honda and other companies have—for years—sold cars incorporating defective air bags. These current events, suggesting a failure of safety regulation, may serve to warn us that safety laws and agencies created with good intentions can be corrupted and strangled over time. This book suggests ways to avoid this result, but shows that safer cars and highways are a hard road to travel. We are only part of the way home.

Download or read book Reading MVRDV written by Véronique Patteeuw and published by Nai010 Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an old printing shop in Rotterdam, MVRDV produces designs and studies in the fields of architecture, urbanism and landscape design. Founded in Rotterdam in 1991 by Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries, MVRDV has become a household name in the Netherlands and beyond. With experimental research projects and mind-bending architecture, MVRDV has carved itself a niche in the international scene over the past ten years. Classic projects include the gravity-defying WoZoCo old age home in Amsterdam, the headquarters for public broadcasting company VPRO in Hilversum, the Dutch pavilion for World Expo 2000 in Hanover, and the recently completed Housing Silo in Amsterdam. The firm's experimental research projects on density, using a method of shaping space through complex amounts of data, have resulted in the publication FARMAX, the traveling exhibition Metacity/Datatown, and Pig City and Costa Iberica. This publication examines the context of MVRDV's research-based thinking and radical design strategies. Texts by a number of international critics, philosophers and architects probe into the whys and wherefores of MVRDV's architecture, the potential of the data-scapes, and the secret of the firm's success. Contributors compare MVRDV with other generations of architects and describe how new concepts are born.

0Exhibition: BOZAR, Brussels, Belgium (27.9.-25.11.2012).

Book excerpt: The landmark history of France and French culture in the eighteenth-century, a winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize When the apprentices of a Paris printing shop in the 1730s held a series of mock trials and then hanged all the cats they could lay their hands on, why did they find it so hilariously funny that they choked with laughter when they reenacted it in pantomime some twenty times? Why in the eighteenth-century version of Little Red Riding Hood did the wolf eat the child at the end? What did the anonymous townsman of Montpelier have in mind when he kept an exhaustive dossier on all the activities of his native city? These are some of the provocative questions the distinguished Harvard historian Robert Darnton answers The Great Cat Massacre, a kaleidoscopic view of European culture during in what we like to call "The Age of Enlightenment." A classic of European history, it is an essential starting point for understanding Enlightenment France.

Book No Accident

    Book Details:
  • Author : Neil Arason
  • Publisher : Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press
  • Release : 2014-04-29
  • ISBN : 1554589657
  • Pages : 499 pages

Download or read book No Accident written by Neil Arason and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is possible to eliminate death and serious injury from Canada’s roads. In other jurisdictions, the European Union, centres in the United States, and at least one automotive company aim to achieve comparable results as early as 2020. In Canada, though, citizens must turn their thinking on its head and make road safety a national priority. Since the motor vehicle first went into mass production, the driver has taken most of the blame for its failures. In a world where each person’s safety is dependent on a system in which millions of drivers must drive perfectly over billions of hours behind the wheel, failure on a massive scale has been the result. When we neglect the central role of the motor vehicle as a dangerous consumer product, the result is one of the largest human-made means for physically assaulting human beings. It is time for Canadians to embrace internationally recognized ways of thinking and enter an era in which the motor vehicle by-product of human carnage is relegated to history. No Accident examines problems related to road safety and makes recommendations for the way forward. Topics include types of drivers; human-related driving errors related to fatigue, speed, alcohol, and distraction and roads; pedestrians, cyclists, and public transit; road engineering; motor vehicle regulation; auto safety design; and collision-avoidance technologies such as radar and camera-based sensors on vehicles that prevent crashes. This multi-disciplinary study demystifies the world of road safety and provides a road map for the next twenty years.

Book Raamwerk in Practice Lichtervelde Youth Centre

Download or read book Raamwerk in Practice Lichtervelde Youth Centre written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Bart Decroos and Raamwerk (architects Gijs De Cock and Freek Dendooven) unfold the design process of Lichtervelde Youth Centre, through a set of unpublished work documents including sketches, scale models, plans, and pictures. Through four anecdotes, they explore how the reality of the construction site allowed them to continue the design process during the realisation of the building itself. Beyond the singularity of this remarkable project, the book demonstrates the critical relevance of construction in architecture theory and discourses. Three additional contributions shed lateral light on the level of research pedagogics and theory: the external outlook and the inner knowledge complement each other.0The book results from the collaboration between KU Leuven, ULB and U Liège within Architecture In Practice, a multi university research group exploring the multiple ways in which individuals can engage their professional architecture practice in academic research and reciprocally. The book has been double blind peer reviewed.

Book Satanism A Social History

Download or read book Satanism A Social History written by Massimo Introvigne and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 17th-century French haberdasher invented the Black Mass. An 18th-century English Cabinet Minister administered the Eucharist to a baboon. High-ranking Catholic authorities in the 19th century believed that Satan appeared in Masonic lodges in the shape of a crocodile and played the piano there. A well-known scientist from the 20th century established a cult of the Antichrist and exploded in a laboratory experiment. Three Italian girls in 2000 sacrificed a nun to the Devil. A Black Metal band honored Satan in Krakow, Poland, in 2004 by exhibiting on stage 120 decapitated sheep heads. Some of these stories, as absurd as they might sound, were real. Others, which might appear to be equally well reported, are false. But even false stories have generated real societal reactions. For the first time, Massimo Introvigne proposes a general social history of Satanism and anti-Satanism, from the French Court of Louis XIV to the Satanic scares of the late 20th century, satanic themes in Black Metal music, the Church of Satan, and beyond.
