Book Jean Leray 99 Conference Proceedings

Download or read book Jean Leray 99 Conference Proceedings written by Maurice de Gosson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains papers presented at the first conference held to honor the memory of, arguably, the greatest mathematician of the twentieth century, Jean Leray. Contributors from all over the world have submitted their work to be included in this unique collection, and it reflects the esteem in which Jean Leray was, and still is held. The book is divided into five parts: hyperbolic systems and equations; symplectic mechanics and geometry; sheaves and spectral sequences; elliptic operators and index theory; and mathematical physics. This volume will appeal to all those who acknowledge the value of Jean Leray's work in general, and students and researchers interested in analysis, topology and geometry, mathematical physics, classical mechanics and fluid mechanics and dynamics in particular.

Book Elliptic Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Elliptic Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations written by Thomas H. Otway and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is a concise introduction to the partial differential equations which change from elliptic to hyperbolic type across a smooth hypersurface of their domain. These are becoming increasingly important in diverse sub-fields of both applied mathematics and engineering, for example: • The heating of fusion plasmas by electromagnetic waves • The behaviour of light near a caustic • Extremal surfaces in the space of special relativity • The formation of rapids; transonic and multiphase fluid flow • The dynamics of certain models for elastic structures • The shape of industrial surfaces such as windshields and airfoils • Pathologies of traffic flow • Harmonic fields in extended projective space They also arise in models for the early universe, for cosmic acceleration, and for possible violation of causality in the interiors of certain compact stars. Within the past 25 years, they have become central to the isometric embedding of Riemannian manifolds and the prescription of Gauss curvature for surfaces: topics in pure mathematics which themselves have important applications. Elliptic−Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations is derived from a mini-course given at the ICMS Workshop on Differential Geometry and Continuum Mechanics held in Edinburgh, Scotland in June 2013. The focus on geometry in that meeting is reflected in these notes, along with the focus on quasilinear equations. In the spirit of the ICMS workshop, this course is addressed both to applied mathematicians and to mathematically-oriented engineers. The emphasis is on very recent applications and methods, the majority of which have not previously appeared in book form.

Book Green s Kernels and Meso Scale Approximations in Perforated Domains

Download or read book Green s Kernels and Meso Scale Approximations in Perforated Domains written by Vladimir Maz'ya and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-06-07 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are a wide range of applications in physics and structural mechanics involving domains with singular perturbations of the boundary. Examples include perforated domains and bodies with defects of different types. The accurate direct numerical treatment of such problems remains a challenge. Asymptotic approximations offer an alternative, efficient solution. Green’s function is considered here as the main object of study rather than a tool for generating solutions of specific boundary value problems. The uniformity of the asymptotic approximations is the principal point of attention. We also show substantial links between Green’s functions and solutions of boundary value problems for meso-scale structures. Such systems involve a large number of small inclusions, so that a small parameter, the relative size of an inclusion, may compete with a large parameter, represented as an overall number of inclusions. The main focus of the present text is on two topics: (a) asymptotics of Green’s kernels in domains with singularly perturbed boundaries and (b) meso-scale asymptotic approximations of physical fields in non-periodic domains with many inclusions. The novel feature of these asymptotic approximations is their uniformity with respect to the independent variables. This book addresses the needs of mathematicians, physicists and engineers, as well as research students interested in asymptotic analysis and numerical computations for solutions to partial differential equations.

Book Mathematical Models for Eddy Currents and Magnetostatics

Download or read book Mathematical Models for Eddy Currents and Magnetostatics written by Rachid Touzani and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph addresses fundamental aspects of mathematical modeling and numerical solution methods of electromagnetic problems involving low frequencies, i.e. magnetostatic and eddy current problems which are rarely presented in the applied mathematics literature. In the first part, the authors introduce the mathematical models in a realistic context in view of their use for industrial applications. Several geometric configurations of electric conductors leading to different mathematical models are carefully derived and analyzed, and numerical methods for the solution of the obtained problems are given. Related issues such as convergence of the approximations and error estimates are discussed. The second part of the monograph presents various coupled problems that involve eddy current or magnetostatic problems, in particular magneto-hydrodynamic problems and magnetic shaping problems concerning the melt flow of electrically conducting metals, induction heating processes, inductively coupled plasmas and ferromagnetic screening modeling. The presentation of each model comes with numerical illustration from industrial applications.

Book The Papacy and the Levant 1204 1571

Download or read book The Papacy and the Levant 1204 1571 written by Kenneth Meyer Setton and published by American Philosophical Society. This book was released on 1976 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third of four volumes which trace the history of the later Crusades and papal relations with the Levant from the accession of Innocent III (in 1198) to the reign of Pius V and the battle of Lepanto (1566-1571). From the mid-fourteenth century to the conclusion of his work, the author has drawn heavily upon unpublished materials, collected in the course of more than twenty "palaeographical journeys" to the Archivio Segreto Vaticano and the Archivi di Stato in Venice, Mantua, Modena, Milan, Siena, Florence, and the Archives of the Order of the Hospitallers at Malta. Volumes 1, II, and IV are available at www.amphilsoc.org.

Book The Sculpture of Reform in North Italy ca 1095 1130

Download or read book The Sculpture of Reform in North Italy ca 1095 1130 written by Dorothy F. Glass and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entirely original in its methodology, this study offers a fresh approach to the study of Romanesque fa?e sculpture. Declining to revisit questions of artistic personalities, artistic style and connoisseurship, Dorothy F. Glass delves instead into the historical and historiographical context for a group of significant monuments erected in Italy between the last decade of the eleventh century and the first third of the twelfth century. In her reading, local culture takes precedence over names, context over connoisseurship; she argues that it was the cultural, intellectual and religious life of the abbeys of San Benedetto Po and Nonantola that provided the framework for the Reformist ethos of much of the sculpture adorning the cathedral of Modena. Glass argues that the monuments are deeply rooted in the concerns of the reform of the church, more commonly known as the Gregorian Reform, that these reform ideas and ideals were first fomented in monastic communities and then adopted by the new cathedrals built in cities that, freed of submission to imperial German rule, had recently rejoined the papal fold. The Sculpture of Reform in North Italy, ca 1095-1130: History and Patronage of Romanesque Fa?es moves scholarship beyond continuously reiterated opinions concerning style, attribution, chronology, origins and influence, instead opening new and fruitful lines of inquiry into the patronage and historical significance of these extraordinary monuments.
