Download or read book Aesop s Human Zoo written by Phaedrus and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us grew up with Aesop's Fables—tales of talking animals, with morals attached. In fact, the familiar versions of the stories attributed to this enigmatic and astute storyteller are based on adaptations of Aesop by the liberated Roman slave Phaedrus. In turn, Phaedrus's renderings have been rewritten so extensively over the centuries that they do not do justice to the originals. In Aesop's Human Zoo, legendary Cambridge classicist John Henderson puts together a surprising set of up-front translations—fifty sharp, raw, and sometimes bawdy, fables by Phaedrus into the tersest colloquial English verse. Providing unusual insights into the heart of Roman culture, these clever poems open up odd avenues of ancient lore and life as they explore social types and physical aspects of the body, regularly mocking the limitations of human nature and offering vulgar or promiscuous interpretations of the stuff of social life. Featuring folksy proverbs and satirical anecdotes, filled with saucy naughtiness and awful puns, Aesop's Human Zoo will amuse you with its eccentricities and hit home with its shrewdly candid and red raw messages. The entertainment offered in this volume of impeccably accurate translations is truly a novelty—a good-hearted and knowing laugh courtesy of classical poetry. Beginning to advanced classicists and Latin scholars will appreciate the original Latin text provided in this bilingual edition. The splash of classic Thomas Bewick wood engravings to accompany the fables renders the collection complete.

Download or read book The Fables of Ph drus written by Phaedrus Phaedrus and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Driven by thirst, a Wolf and a Lamb had come to the same stream; the Wolf stood above, and the Lamb at a distance below. Then, the spoiler, prompted by a ravenous maw, alleged a pretext for a quarrel. "Why," said he, "have you made the water muddy for me while I am drinking?" The Fleece-bearer, trembling, answered: "Prithee, Wolf, how can I do what you complain of? The water is flowing downwards from you to where I am drinking." The other, disconcerted by the force of truth, exclaimed: "Six months ago, you slandered me." "Indeed," answered the Lamb, "I was not born then." "By Hercules," said the Wolf, "then "twas your father slandered me;" and so, snatching him up, he tore him to pieces, killing him unjustly. This Fable is applicable to those men who, under false pretences, oppress the innocent.
Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Descartes written by John Cottingham and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-09-25 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Descartes occupies a position of pivotal importance as one of the founding fathers of modern philosophy; he is, perhaps the most widely studied of all philosophers. In this authoritative collection an international team of leading scholars in Cartesian studies present the full range of Descartes' extraordinary philosophical achievement. His life and the development of his thought, as well as the intellectual background to and reception of his work, are treated at length. At the core of the volume are a group of chapters on his metaphysics: the celebrated 'Cogito' argument, the proofs of God's existence, the 'Cartesian circle' and the dualistic theory of the mind and its relation to his theological and scientific views. Other chapters cover the philosophical implications of his work in algebra, his place in the seventeenth-century scientific revolution, the structure of his physics, and his work on physiology and psychology.
Download or read book The Essential Guide to Dutch Music written by Jolande van der Klis and published by Leiden University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the composers of Dutch origin, only a handful have achieved world renown, such as early seventeenth century's Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck and today's Louis Andriessen. Nonetheless, so much more Dutch music is worthy of attention. Now, for the first time ever, four centuries of composition in the Netherlands are documented in an alphabetical reference work. This book, an initiative of MuziekGroep Nederland, contains a hundred articles written by over forty specialists. Each essay deals with the life and work of an individual composer and is followed by a list of works as well as a discography. Short bibliographies make suggestions for more specialized reading.

Download or read book Telling Tales on Caesar written by Phaedrus and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2001 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cameos showcase Tiberius in private and Augustus in court, with Pompey the Great on campaign and Phaedrus himself struggling against prejudice and persecution, and tales feature all sorts - a toadying slave, wicked servant, vain musician, effeminate soldier, sexy poet, and rogue quack. These forgotten tales tell short and clear Roman parables of power and powerlessness. Humorous and acute, they explain, and protest at, the Caesars, and they sit perfectly among Aesop's sadistic lions, murderous wolves, and apes in purple."--Jacket.
