S'il n'y a que des traces d'eau et très peu d'iode, les aiguilles d'acide sulfurique anhydre se colo rent en vert, et, à mesure que la quantité d'eau augmente, les aiguilles et l'iode se dissolvent, et la matière brune se pro duit; elle se recouvre d'ailleurs rapidement d'acide sulfu rique anhydre. Soumies à l'action de la chaleur, la matière brune et les aiguilles vertes d'acide sulfurique coloré par un peu d'iode dégagent des vapeurs d'iode mélangées d'acide sulfurique anhydre en vapeur. Le mélange de 'i0de et de l'acide sulfurique anhydre se fait en toutes proportions, il n'y a pas de combinaison entre ces deux corps, la matière brune ne se produisant pas quand les élé ments mis en présence sont parfaitement privés d'eau.
