Download or read book The Superstitious Mind written by Judith Devlin and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This intriguing book examines popular religion, traditional medicine, witchcraft, apparitions, demonology, and magic in nineteenth-century rural France. Devlin demonstrates that many of the impulses and mental processes now considered superstitious constituted a wholly reasonable response to the pressures of a harsh and impoverished life. Far from the product of a primitive mentality, many of these beliefs have survived in modern culture and can even illuminate the nature of modern mass politics.

Book excerpt: The living and the dead cohabited Paris until the late 18th century, when, in the name of public health, measures were taken to drive the latter from the city. Cemeteries were removed from urban space, and corpses started to be viewed as terrifyingly noxious substances. Working across a broad range of disciplines this book seeks to understand the meaning of the dead and their role in creating one of the most important cities of the contemporary world.
Download or read book Body Counts written by Fondation Marcel Mérieux and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2005 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an invigorating comparative and interdisciplinary reconsideration of the role of different types of medical counting, this wide-ranging bilingual volume takes us from the mortality tables of the eighteenth century to the movement for evidence-based medicine in our own day. Culled from the proceedings of La quantification dans les sciences medicales et de la sante: perspective historique held at the Musee Claude-Bernard in France in 2002, Body Counts moves beyond the usual emphasis on public health and clinical medicine to include the central role of numbers in laboratory work and medical instrumentation. Body Counts provides an innovative, historical, and sociological account of the functions of quantification. Download or read book Pornographic Archaeology written by Zrinka Stahuljak and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2012-10-08 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pornographic Archaeology: Medicine, Medievalism, and the Invention of the French Nation, Zrinka Stahuljak explores the connections and fissures between the history of sexuality, nineteenth-century views of the Middle Ages, and the conceptualization of modern France. This cultural history uncovers the determinant role that the sexuality of the Middle Ages played in nineteenth-century French identity. Stahuljak's provocative study of sex, blood, race, and love in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century medical and historical literature demonstrates how French medicine's obsession with the medieval past helped to define European sexuality, race, public health policy, marriage, family, and the conceptualization of the Middle Ages. Stahuljak reveals the connections between the medieval military order of the Templars and the 1830 colonization of Algeria, between a fifteenth-century French marshal and the development of Richard von Krafft-Ebing's theory of sadism, between courtly love and the 1884 law on divorce. Although the developing discipline of medieval studies eventually rejected the influence of these medical philologists, the convergence of medievalism and medicine shaped modern capitalist French society and established a vision of the Middle Ages that survives today.

Download or read book Abuse or Punishment written by Marie-Aimée Cliche and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2014-11-26 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At one time, the use of corporal punishment by parents in child-rearing was considered normal, but in the second half of the nineteenth century this begin to change, in Quebec as well as the rest of the Western world. It was during this period that the extent of ill-treatment inflicted on children—treatment once excused as good child-rearing practice—was discovered. This book analyzes both the advice provided to parents and the different forms of child abuse within families. Cliche derives her information from family magazines, reports and advice columns in newspapers, people’s life stories, the records of the Montreal Juvenile Court, and even comic strips. Two dates are given particular focus: 1920, with the trial of the parents of Aurore Gagnon, which sensitized the public to the phenomenon of “child martyrs;” and 1940, with the advent of the New Education movement, which was based on psychology rather than strict discipline and religious doctrine. There has always been child abuse. What has changed is society’s sensitivity to it. That is why defenders of children’s rights call for the repeal of Section 43 of the Canadian Criminal Code, which authorizes “reasonable” corporal punishment. Abuse or Punishment? considers not only the history of violence towards children in Quebec but the history of public perception of this violence and what it means for the rest of Canada.
