Book Introductory Mass Spectrometry Second Edition

Download or read book Introductory Mass Spectrometry Second Edition written by Stephen Shrader and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mass spectrometry has played an integral part in the study of organic molecular structures for more than 50 years, offering significant information from small amounts of sample. The mass spectrum produced by electron impact ionization presents a pattern of peaks that can often give definitive structural information about an unknown compound. Introductory Mass Spectrometry, Second Edition guides readers in the understanding and recognition of those patterns, discussing mass spectra in terms that are familiar to chemists. It provides a basis for chemists to interpret mass spectra to solve particular structural problems. The Second Edition has been updated with modern techniques and data handling. Beginning with an introduction to the principles and instrumentation, it then sequentially explains the processes that occur in the mass spectrometer following ionization. The book is unique in the large number of mass spectra presented and provides examples of mass spectra from a wide variety of organic chemicals, concentrating on the relationships between fragmentation patterns, common chemical reactions, and chemical structures. The book also discusses mass spectra obtained with softer ionization techniques, which provide definitive information regarding molecular weights. The text describes mass spectra produced by electron ionization, discussing how the spectral peak pattern relates to molecular structure. It details the use of high-resolution and accurate mass measurement to determine elemental composition of ions in order to identify unknown substances. The book also introduces some of the recent techniques that can be employed to extend the usefulness of mass spectrometry to high molecular weight substances and more polar substances. It includes examples and problems representing a cross section of organic chemistry to help readers integrate the principles presented.

Download or read book Anion Receptor Chemistry written by Jonathan L Sessler and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anion recognition plays a critical role in a range of biological processes, and a variety of receptors and carriers can be found throughout the natural world. Chemists working in the area of supramolecular chemistry have created a range of anion receptors, drawing inspiration from nature as well as their own inventive processes. This book traces the origins of anion recognition chemistry as a unique sub-field in supramolecular chemistry while illustrating the basic approaches currently being used to effect receptor design. The combination of biological overview and summary of current synthetic approaches provides a coverage that is both comprehensive and comprehensible. First, the authors detail the key design motifs that have been used to generate synthetic receptors and which are likely to provide the basis for further developments. They also highlight briefly some of the features that are present in naturally occurring anion recognition and transport systems and summarise the applications of anion recognition chemistry. Providing as it does a detailed review for practitioners in the field and a concise introduction to the topic for newcomers, Anion Receptor Chemistry reflects the current state of the art. Fully referenced and illustrated in colour, it is a welcome addition to the literature.

Book Analyses for Mechanical Stability for Systems of Ions and Atoms Associated with Rings Cages and Crypts

Download or read book Analyses for Mechanical Stability for Systems of Ions and Atoms Associated with Rings Cages and Crypts written by J. M. McKinley and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There exist examples of systems in which small, simple metallic cations are associated with ring-like molecules (e.g., aromatic radical anions), with aggregates of molecules which encage the ion (e.g., solvation and coordination), or special molecules which trap ions within the molecular structure (crypts). For each of these examples, the harmonic oscillations of the ion in the presence of the molecular structure can be observed. Moreover, in many instances, the stability of the ionic motions in the presence of the molecular structure is important in considering some form of transport process which is associated with the ion. In this paper we present an analysis of the mechanics of the motion of an ion under the influence of various molecular structures. For our analyses, we use a form of symmetry-adapted Taylor series which we recently developed. We determine the positions of equilibrium for the ion in the presence of a continuous ring, a polygon and a polyhedron of sourses for the pair-wise forces. We also determine the states of stability for the positions of equilibrium through an examination of the second order terms in the Taylor series.

Book Instability Constants of Complex Compounds

Download or read book Instability Constants of Complex Compounds written by K. B. Yatsimirskii and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years many research workers have turned their attention to the quantitative characterization of complex compounds and reactions of complex-formation in solution. Instability constants characterize quantitatively the equili bria in solutions of complex compounds and are extensively used by chemists of widely-varying specialities, in analytical chemistry, electrochemistry, the technology of non-ferrous and rare metals, etc., for calculations of various kinds. Despite the wealth of numerical data, no reasonably full coliection of instability constants of complex compounds has been made until now. The various individual collections of data are far from complete and in most cases omit references to the source materials. Moreover, the present state of the chemistry of complex compounds most urgently demands the complete systematization of data on instability constants and an extension of work in this field which would take advantage of the latest physico-chemical methods. The present work contains instability constants for 1,381 complex compounds. We have considered it convenient to preface the summary of the instability constants with an introductory section of a general theoretical character. This section deals with methods for the calculation of instability constants from experimental data, the influence of external conditions, such as temperature and ionic strength, on the stability of com plexes, and the principal factors determining the stability of complex compounds in aqueous solution. (vii) PREFACE In compiling the summary we have used the original litera ture and abstracts for the most part up to 1954, and some work published in 1955-1956.

Book Molecular Anion Spectroscopy and Stability

Download or read book Molecular Anion Spectroscopy and Stability written by Jeffrey Daniel Steill and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed and thorough computational investigation of the SF6[superscript minus} anion is undertaken, with additional calculations of other stable SF−[subscript n] anions. The calculations are used to interpret recent infrared multi-photon dissociation (IRMPD) experiments of SF6[superscript minus] and SF5[superscript minus] anions done with the FELIX free electron tunable infrared laser in the spectral range of 450-850 cm−1. The vibrational spectroscopy of negative molecular ions is crucial towards understanding the dynamics of electron transfer processes, as well as providing experimental validation for computational models of molecular bonding in anions. Many molecular negative ions have been shown to exhibit long (i.e.> 1[mu]s) lifetimes with respect to electron autodetachment, and a recent reformulation of QET, or quasi- equilibrium theory, has shown success in reproducing these experimental lifetimes for a variety of molecules. In particular, the SF6[superscript minus] anion has an interesting history of disparate results for autodetachment lifetime measurements, largely dependent upon the type of experimental method employed. Analysis of the experimental data in reference to the theoretical predictions of QET suggests this disparity may be related to the degree of IVR, or inter-vibrational coupling occurring in the anion. Calculation of the electron autodetachment lifetime according to QET requires accurate values for the electron affinity as well as the vibrational frequencies for both the neutral and the anion. Ab-initio and DFT computations are extremely useful for providing reasonable estimates of the anion vibrational frequencies, however, experimental constraints upon these values are essential. An additional benefit of anion vibrational spectroscopy is the elucidation of molecular structure and symmetry. This is particularly relevant for the case of SF6[superscript minus], as certain computational methods show interesting results in regard to the distortion to lowered C4[subscript v] symmetry. This is in contradiction to the expected O[subscript h] symmetry of the SF6[superscript minus] anion, and the potential energy surface along this multi-dimensional vector of S-F bond dissociation is further computationally explored, as are the theoretical implications of a multiple-well potential surface.

Book Determination and Use of Stability Constants

Download or read book Determination and Use of Stability Constants written by Arthur E. Martell and published by Wiley-VCH. This book was released on 1992-03-30 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes potentiometric methods for determining stability constants and explains how these constants can be used to describe metal ion speciation in complex environmental and biological systems. It also provides three original computer programs on a disk for calculating stability constants and for using stability constants to calculate concentrations of molecular species in solution. The author gives examples of calculations for simple metal chelates, for metal complexes of large organic molecules, and for mixtures containing several metal ions and complexing agents in aqueous solution. They also describe common errors in calculating stability constants and how to avoid them. This carefully revised second edition is now even more useful to the reader, and, in particular, to those who make use of the program disk. Each program has been revised to improve speed, control, and error trapping.
