Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume describes physical properties of tungsten metal and covers specifically surface properties, electron emission, and field evaporation. Tungsten surfaces are probably the most extensively studied metal surfaces. Recently, experimentalists and theorists have focussed their interest on the atomic structure, lattice dynamics, and electronic properties of the W(100) surface. While the structure of the reconstructed low-temperature surface is well established, there are still unresolved problems concerning the structure at and above room temperature, the nature of the phase transition, and the driving force for the reconstruction. There are numerous and partly conflicting data on the surface energy, the self-diffusion parameters, and the work function of single-crystal and polycrystal tungsten surfaces. Electron emission, which is of fundamental importance for many applications, comprises thermionic, field, photofield, and photoelectric emission as well as emission induced by impinging electrons, atoms, or ions. Pioneering work in areas like thermionic or field emission is comprehensively discussed. Very recent studies of valence-band and core-level spectra moreover provide detailed information on intrinsic surface properties.

Book excerpt: The present supplement volume, A 7, is the first of a triad, A 5 to A 7, dealing with the chemical reactions of metallic tungsten. It describes the reactions with inorganic and organic compounds, except for formation reactions of organotungsten compounds. Volume A 6, to appear at the beginning of 1988, will cover the reactions of tungsten with metallic elements. Volume A 5, in preparation for 1988/89, will contain the reactions with nonmetallic elements and, in addition, cover the electrochemistry of tungsten. With the appearance of this last volume, the present knowledge of the chemistry of tungsten will be compiled in more than 1000 pages. In the Gmelin main volume on tungsten, published in 1933, the presentation of the information then available on the same subject required less than 6 pages. This enormous increase in relevant data over the last fifty years is stupefying, considering the fact that tungsten is a rather inert metal which is resistant to most chemical agents up to high temperatures. With afew exceptions,in fact, it was not so much the reactions of bulk tungsten which attracted the interest of the experimenters as the reactions taking place at its surface. This comes about for practical as well as scientific reasons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume continues the description of the chemical reactions of eiemental tungsten started with "Tungsten" Suppl. Vol. A 7. It covers the reactions with the metallic elements from zinc to actinoids. The treatment includes phase diagrams, bulk reactions, and surface processes which again are of outstanding importance in most systems. The raader is referred to the introductory remarks on pp. X/XI. Book Metal Chemical Reactions with Metals Antimony to Barium

Download or read book Metal Chemical Reactions with Metals Antimony to Barium written by Ernst Koch and published by Springer. This book was released on 1991-09-15 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume completes the description of the interactions and chemical reactions of elemental tungsten with metallic elements, treating its reactions with antimony, bismuth, and the alkali and alkaline earth metals. The reactions of tungsten with these elements are in most cases confined to surface regions. Corrosion of tungsten and mutual solubility are usually very low. An exception is the W - Be system, in which several intermetallic phases are formed. The surface processes in some of the other systems covered in the present volume evoked considerable scientific and practical interest, documented by the large number of publications. This holds particularly for the Cs-on-W and Ba-on-W surface systems. Cs- and Ba-activated tungsten electrodes were and are used in many technical and laboratory appliances. One example is the Cs diode device for thermionic energy conversion. Surface ionization of Cs and W is widely applied in ion sources and for some time attracted great attention with respect to its potential use in ion rocket propulsion engines. Cs-on-W is also a logical system for basic research on chemisorption due to the propitious chemical, crystallographic, and atomic properties of adsorbent and adsorbate. The majority of existing models for the chemisorption bond has been experimentally checked on this system. The particular interest in the W - Cs and W - Ba systems is reflected in the large portion of the text (256 pages) devoted to these systems.

Book Physical Properties Continued

Download or read book Physical Properties Continued written by Elisabeth Koch-Bienemann and published by Springer. This book was released on 1989 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume continues the edition of a number of supplement volumes dealing with the elements tungsten and molybdenum. Technology and metallurgy of molybdenum and tungsten have been described in the respective volumes A 1. Tungsten Supplement Volume A 2 has been published and comprises the nuclear and atomic properties, sections on the clusters and the vapor, the electronic structure, the lattice dynamics, and the basic crystallographic properties. The present volume A/3 deals with the relationships between lattice defects and mechanical properties. Each of the subsequent chapters, concerning the thermal, electrical, magnetic, and optical properties, has a somewhat larger scope than the corresponding chapter in the Molybdenum Supplement Volumes. Within these chapters, some noteworthy facts are the following: the melting point of tungsten is the highest of all metals, i.e., 3695 K, the behavior of the current carriers has been studied in great detail by numerous methods, and the emissivity characteristics have received much attention above all because of the high melting point. Another special feature is the very intense study of all surface properties and the phenomena, which will be described in a forthcoming volume.
