Bancroft and his assistants set out to record the memoirs of early Californios, one of them being eighty-three-year-old Don Jose Maria Amador, a former Forty-Niner during the California Gold Rush and soldado de cuera at the Presidio of San Francisco. Amador tells of reconnoitering expeditions into the interior of California, where he encountered local indigenous populations. He speaks of political events of Mexican California and the widespread confiscation of the Californios' goods, livestock, and properties when the United States took control. A friend from Mission Santa Cruz, Lorenzo Asisara, also describes the harsh life and mistreatment the Indians faced from the priests. Both the Amador and Asisara narratives were used as sources in Bancroft's writing but never published themselves. Gregorio Mora-Torres has now rescued them from obscurity and presents their voices in English translation (with annotations) and in the original Spanish on facing pages. This bilingual edition will be of great interest to historians of the West, California, and Mexican American studies.

The phenomenon of hybridity has been pervasive throughout Spanish history. The hybrid literary and visual texts studied in this volume—ranging from aljamiado writings and the legacy from the convivencia to contemporary immigration narratives—blur or erase purportedly fixed boundaries: between history and fiction, story and History, nationality and transnationalism, subjectivity and objectivity, as well as between genres, cultures, languages and eras. Hybridity constitutes the state of simultaneously belonging to categories that had previously been considered exclusive. It renders the concept of pure as a construct, a chosen perception, a psychic imposition on experience. Implicit within hybridity is a fusion of two or more separate factors, entities or concepts, but the essential aspect of this fusion is that the hybrid text becomes an original. Hence, hybridity nods to the past, but points to the future. Hybridity in Spanish Culture, written both in Spanish and English, as a “metahybrid,” is a collection about hybridity that is a hybrid itself. In hopes of blurring borders, dissipating taxonomies, and dehierarchizing binary oppositions, the European and US authors and editors contribute to cultural studies scholarship and underscore the omnipresence and ubiquity of interstitial conditions as they relate to national or cultural identity, linguistic crossings, inter-genre blendings and the conception of home and belonging.

Recognized by the International Society of Poets in Owings Mills, Maryland, “A Flight in the Night” was published back in 2002 by the International Library of Poetry. He has been writing in English now for twenty-five years. With over a hundred poems written, half of them reside in Spanish, and the other half in English. Las poesías las he agrupado por el tipo de sentimiento que las motivó, o los momentos personales, y estados de ánimo, que las provocaron. En cada grupo aparecen en el orden temporal en que fueron escritas. Momentos de "Imposibles" hay siempre en la vida de cualquiera: deseos que son irrealizables por una u otra circunstancia, y de muy variados tipos. Los Momentos de "Ensueños" reflejan las ilusiones de mi etapa adolescente. "Ansiedades" están ligadas a algún tipo de angustia, llevaderas unas, asfixiantes otras. "Añoranzas" se producen al recordar momentos que dieron felicidad. Momentos de "Familia" se corresponden con recuerdos familiares. "Reflexiones" resultan de los momentos en que hacemos un poco de filosofía personal. "Variedades" son poesías circunstanciales que no encajan en los grupos anteriores. "Dicha", al ver la que tengo en mi recta final y en lo que está por venir.
