Book Rabbit un redeemed

Download or read book Rabbit un redeemed written by Peter J. Bailey and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book approaches Updike's oeuvre by illuminating its ongoing, pervasive conflict between faith and doubt. Concentrating on a trio of Olinger stories, the Rabbit Angstrom tetralogy, In the Beauty of the Lilies, and Rabbit Remembered and dramatizing most emphatically Updike's career-spanning dialogue with his complexly fragile religious beliefs, Bailey interprets the Rabbit saga as fictionalized spiritual autobiography in which, through imposing Harry Angstrom's perceptual limitations upon his own stylistic gifts, Updike set himself the toughest trial of his ethical and aesthetic creed of the spirit-affirming capacities of human perception and expression.

Download or read book Rabbit Tales written by Lawrence R. Broer and published by University Alabama Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tales of Rabbit Angstrom - Rabbit, Run (1960), Rabbit Redux (1971), Rabbit is Rich (1981) and Rabbit at Rest (1990 - Updike's Rabbit, the aging high-school basketball star adrift in the century's confusion, is an archetypal American hero, one strikingly real and individual yet emblematic of his class, his country and his era. Updike's achievements in these novels as poet and historian - his weaving of lyric and epic, of art and four decades of American politics - require that the novels be read on a variety of levels, thus lending themselves to the critical approaches represented in Rabbit Tales.

Book John Updike s Rabbit at Rest

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dilvo I. Ristoff
  • Publisher : Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers
  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book John Updike s Rabbit at Rest written by Dilvo I. Ristoff and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1998 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Updike's Rabbit at Rest: Appropriating History is a new historicist reading of Updike's last Rabbit novel. It follows the day-to-day chronology of events, in the novel and in the media, showing how history, with its variety and polyphonic immediacy, is appropriated by the characters, with what criteria, through which tropes, and to what ideological purpose. Although the emphasis of the text falls on Updike's appropriation of American history in the 1980's as it manifests itself in Rabbit at Rest, significant references are also made to the other Rabbit novels. These novels show how the history of the earlier decades is made into a motive for the characters' thoughts, feelings, and actions.

Book John Updike s Rabbit Tetralogy

Download or read book John Updike s Rabbit Tetralogy written by Marshall Boswell and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boswell shows that although each of the four individual Rabbit novels confirms this dialectical strategy in a unique way, the completed tetralogy comprises an additional series of dialectical pairs that sustain, rather than resolve, thematic and formal tension. Ultimately, the structure of the finished "mega-novel" echoes the work's thematic rationale." "To help readers who are interested in a particular Rabbit novel. Boswell devotes a chapter to each individual section of the tetralogy. At the same time, he treats each novel as an integral part of the more comprehensive whole."--BOOK JACKET.

Book John Updike

Download or read book John Updike written by Jack De Bellis and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2005-02-28 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-seven critics, as well as Updike himself, provide a kaleidoscopic view of the Rabbit Angstrom saga in 34 reviews and essays. There is dual purpose of this collection of critical responses: first, to provide a historical view of the critical reception of all of Updike's works about Harry Rabbit Angstrom—the four Rabbit novels and the novella Rabbit Remembered and second, to show how these reviews and articles can illuminate the reader with the range of approaches to the saga. These responses to the saga reveal the reception of each installment of the saga and how critical acclamation rose with each work. The first reviews of Rabbit, Run noted Updike's ability to redeem an ex-basketball player's ordinary life through brilliant, innovative style. Scholarly essays debated whether Rabbit was a satiric figure. Updike's sequel, Rabbit Redux, showed how, for reviewer Richard Locke the inner surface of banal experiences could be blended seamlessly to social unrest and war. A later critic, Irina Negrea adopted the Jean Baudrillard to critique Marshall McLuhan's optimistic vision of the global village. Reviewer Thomas R. Edwards found that Rabbit Is Rich is composed of meditations on religion, politics, and economics, with motifs intertwined. The saga, for critic Ralph Wood showed Updike as our finest literary celebrant both of human ambiguity and the human acceptance of it. Reviewing Rabbit at Rest, Joyce Carol Oates called it a hugely ambitious achievement and critic Thomas Disch proclaimed, it to be the best large-scale literary work by an American in this century, thus the Great American Novel.
