Book An American Angler in Australia

Download or read book An American Angler in Australia written by Zane Grey and published by ETT Imprint. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1936, the celebrated American author Zane Grey arrived in the sleepy New South Wales town of Bermagui, with the express reason of angling for the world's largest fish - Marlin, sharks and Swordfish. Here is his little classic of the chase. Four miles out I sighted a long sickle fin cutting through a swell. Did I yell, "Marlin!"? I certainly did. An instant later Peter sighted another farther out, and this tail fin belonged to a large fish. I could not tell whether or not it indicated a black marlin. It stood up three feet or more, and that much would make a tail spread of over six feet. These marlin were riding the swells and they were moving fast. The tails would come up out of the top of a swell and cut the water at more than a ten-knot speed. Then they would vanish. It is always necessary to run the boat in the right direction to head the fish off. The Avalon is fast - she can do eighteen knots when opened up - but we could not catch up with the big fellow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In every coastal town in Australia, there's a bait shop and a boat ramp, and, in garages around the country, fishing rods are strung up waiting for their next outing. Many of us have a special fishing spot, and families pass on tips from generation to generation and exchange fishy tales of amazing catches and near misses. Bringing her personal passion for throwing in a line, author Anna Clark celebrates the enduring pleasure of fishing in "The Catch: The Story of Fishing in Australia". This book charts the history of fishing, from the first known accounts of Indigenous fishing and early European encounters with Australia's waters to the latest fishing fads; from the introduction of trout and fly fishing to the challenges of balancing needs of commercial and recreational fishers. Fishing personality Rob Paxevanos, host of "Fishing Australia", says that "The Catch" is 'by far my best fishing read to date'.

Book Of Rivers and Rises

Download or read book Of Rivers and Rises written by Les Hawkins and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-11-07 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The is book is written in appreciation of the many joys and quiet contentment that I have found in my wanderings by river and lake. These words were penned by the legendary Australian author David Scholes. It would be hard to find a better way to introduce a collection of fi shing adventures, because fi fty years of waving the slender rod have given me abundant pleasure, copious exercise both physically and mentally, wonderful & lasting friendships and the enjoyment of being at one with nature. On refl ection, it seems that centuries ago a good friend and skilled fl y fi sherman introduced me to what became a pastime, perhaps an art, certainly a physical exercise, a method of spending the family fortune and a lifelong pleasure. We were privileged in those days to enjoy accommodation in the heart of some of the fi nest trout streams in Australia, as the Red Shack stood alongside Pollocks Creek at Kiandra. Oddly, it was also known as the Poachers hut, odd because the keenly enthusiastic users were exactly the opposite, with the tongue-in-cheek motto there are no rules and dont you dare break them. Since those early days I have fi shed in many countries and all the states of Australia and although the body ages the enthusiasm does not. I hope you enjoy the ramblings in the following chapters and perhaps disagree or otherwise with some of the theories within.

Book Fishing in the Good Old Days

Download or read book Fishing in the Good Old Days written by Bob Kearney and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2022-03-29 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bob Kearney has been addicted to recreational fishing and is a devout keeper of the legends and lore of the Australian angler. He is also a world authority on fisheries and marine ecosystem management. In Fishing in the Good Old Days, Kearney looks back on his six decades of experience as a fisherman in earnest pursuit of the iconic jewfish off the rocks and beaches of northern New South Wales. He recalls unforgettable adventures, colourful personalities, the thrill of the chase and, yes, the ones that got away. Along the way, he exposes the environmental consequences of poorly planned coastal activities. Kearney also addresses a serious question: Is the holistic experience of fishing for fun, now, truly not as good as it was in the 1960s? Of course, this question rests on many others about recreational and commercial fishing practice, fisheries management, coastal and marine conservation, and the impact of the terrestrial world, including through human population growth and climate change. With a grasp of the scientific research as acute as his ear for the anglers’ voices of his youth, Kearney demonstrates that the answer to his question is far from straightforward.
