Book Sociolinguistics Soziolinguistik Volume 1

Download or read book Sociolinguistics Soziolinguistik Volume 1 written by Ulrich Ammon and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 888 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition of the handbook Sociolinguistics/Soziolinguistik , the then young discipline has changed and developed considerably. The field has left behind its status as an interdiscipline between sociology and linguistics and is now a worldwide established field. Sociolinguistics continues to contribute to solving practical problems in areas such as language planning and standardization, language policy, as well as in language didactics and speech therapy. Moreover, new topics and areas of application have arisen from the autonomy of the discipline - these have been systematically and extensively included in the second edition of the handbook. The new overall concept depicts the regional and disciplinary representativity of sociolinguistic research while offering an encyclopedia-like useablitiy for all its readers. This includes theoretical depth and stringency for readers interested in theory, as well as methodical abundance and detail for empirical researchers. The descriptions of methods are so informative and precise that they can directly be used in the preparation of project planning. Similarly, the descriptions in the practice-oriented articles are so precise that users can accurately assess to what extent they can expect a certain sociolinguistic approach to help solve their problems. With an extensive description as its goal, the second edition of the handbook Sociolinguistics/Soziolinguistik takes into account the current standing of the discipline and the modified structure of the field.

Book Linguistics and Literary Studies Linguistik und Literaturwissenschaft

Download or read book Linguistics and Literary Studies Linguistik und Literaturwissenschaft written by Monika Fludernik and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Engagement in Professional Genres

Download or read book Engagement in Professional Genres written by Carmen Sancho Guinda and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-04-24 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engagement has turned essential in today’s communication, as professional communities are becoming more specialised and transient, and their audiences more diverse. Promotionalism and competitiveness, in addition, increasingly pervade human activity, and thus engaging readers, listeners and viewers to attract and persuade them is part of the know-how of almost every profession. The eighteen chapters in this book, written by well-known discourse analysts from different nationalities and research backgrounds, and with various interests and understandings of communicative engagement, guide us through a discovery of perspectives and strategies across work settings and practices, genres, semiotic modes, discourses, disciplines, and theoretical frameworks and methods. They build a mosaic that leads to a broad picture of (meta)discursive engagement as (di)stance and raises current issues, challenges, and future research directions.

Book Language for Specific Purposes

Download or read book Language for Specific Purposes written by Giuliana Elena Garzone and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together work by both well-known scholars and emerging researchers in the various areas of Language for Specific Purposes (LSP), such as political, legal, medical, and business discourse. The volume is divided into three parts in order to align rather than separate three different but related aspects of LSP: namely, translation, linguistic research, and domain specific communication on the web. Underlying all the contributions here is the growing awareness of the ever-increasing multiformity of specialised communication and the ever-wider social implications of the communicative situations in which it is embedded, especially where it involves the need to move across languages, cultures and modes, as in translation and interpreting. The contributions consistently bear witness to the need to review received notions, pose new questions, and explore fresh perspectives. The picture that emerges is one of extreme complexity, in which researchers into specifically linguistic aspects of LSPs and their translation across languages and media declare their awareness of the pressing need to come to terms with a wide range of social, pragmatic, intercultural and political factors, above and beyond socio-technical knowledge of the domains under investigation.

Book Constructing Legal Discourses and Social Practices

Download or read book Constructing Legal Discourses and Social Practices written by Girolamo Tessuto and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-11 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over recent decades, legal language and its representation of social action, social actors and social practices have provided systematic insights into the meaning and function of text, discourse or talk realised in academic, professional and institutional sites of communication, and generated a variety of data for analysis, method and theory. Constructing Legal Discourses and Social Practices, the first issue of the Legal Discourse and Communication international series, looks descriptively and interpretatively at the realised forms of legal discourse and how these are framed and organised by social practices within distinctive sites of legal communication. The four main parts of the book provide a broad coverage of key issues and perspectives arising from a variety of genres (spoken, as well as written) employed in institutional, professional and organisational communication of the law, and bring into focus recent research where language and law play out in the real world. This invaluable book is multi-dimensional and multi-perspectival in its design and implementation, and will be an essential reference for those researching and working in the areas of applied linguistics and for postgraduate students.

Book The Architecture of Determiners

Download or read book The Architecture of Determiners written by Thomas Leu and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2015 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work in morphology is typically concerned with productive word formation and regular inflection, in any event with open class categories such as verbs, nouns, and adjectives, and their various forms. The Architecture of Determiners, by contrast, is devoted to a set of function words: the closed class of determiners. While it is traditionally assumed that function words are syntactically atomic, Thomas Leu shows that a comparative perspective on a series of determiners - each insistently vivisected into its minimal morphotactic segments - reveals an anatomy with properties analogous to clausal syntax, including a lexical, an inflectional, and left peripheral layer, as well as transformational relations among subconstituents. Leu argues that determiners are extended adjectival projections with a closed class minimal stem. Leu focuses on Swiss German and German, using other Germanic and non-Germanic languages as a comparative domain. His discussion of the internal structure of determiners includes demonstratives (ch.2), distributive quantifiers (ch.4), possessive and negative determiners (ch.5), and interrogative determiners such as 'was f r' (ch.6). His main claim - that all of these involve extended adjectival projections - connects naturally to a discussion of adjectival / determiner inflection in German. Chapter 3 addresses the oft-debated strong versus weak agreement alternation in a novel way, proposing that the adjective moves within its own extended projection, in a way akin to verb movement to C in the clause. This accounts for the central facts of nominative and accusative inflection. Chapter 7, then, addresses dative and genitive morphology, setting them syntactically apart from adjectival / determiner inflection in a way that leads to a surprising account of most of the systematic (meta-) syncretism patterns in German adjectival inflection.

Book The Architecture of Focus

Download or read book The Architecture of Focus written by Valéria Molnár and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-12-22 with total page 629 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection investigates the architecture of focus in linguistic theory from different theoretical perspectives. Research on focus and information structure in the last four decades has shown that the phenomenon of focus is highly complex, the theoretical approaches manifold, and the data highly sensitive. The main emphasis has been placed on the integration of the notion of focus in generative grammar. In recent years, however, the approaches to focus and information structure underwent a radical change in perspective. The theoretical concept of focus, its related terms and phenomena became the object of research. Along with it, the research questions shifted: instead of locating focus in the architecture of grammar, linguists investigate the architecture of focus itself. The central underlying idea of this collection is to document this change in perspective with the aim of isolating essential keystones and research areas in both the theoretical and empirical domain. The book is structured accordingly. Following the introduction, there are four main sections: The general section discusses the theoretical foundations of focus within grammar. The second section hosts papers which investigate the representation of focus and topic at the syntax-pragmatics interface. The third section discusses the phonological representation of focus and its relation to meaning. The papers of the final section investigate different types of focus constructions in a variety languages. The collection of papers on the architecture of focus, its interpretation and representation mirror the establishment of the focus research field.
