Gabriel Durrand's wingman, ex Army Ranger Linus Shepherd, has failed to return from a covert mission in the sweltering jungles of Colombia. Gabe is determined to make certain no man is left behind. Not on his watch. Recouping from an injury himself, he knows he can't bring Shep home alone and seeks an interpreter. When an unknown named Eddy Edwards is recommended for the assignment, Gabe hopes to meet him at Edwards’ neighborhood bar. Hours later, thinking this Eddy is a no-show, Gabe flirts with a girl-next-door beauty. Sparks fly, but during the ensuing romantic interlude, he realizes she’s heavily armed, deadly dangerous, and probably an enemy operative. Jennifer ‘Eddy’ Edwards has been on desk duty at the CIA for far too long and is ready to get her hands dirty, but when she meets sexy Gabriel Durrand at her local hangout, wires get crossed, hormones sizzle, and a battle erupts. Will this unlikely team save Shepherd or will they kill each other before ever arriving in South America? Book Burning Down the House

  • ISBN : 1101911190
  • Pages : 306 pages

Download or read book Burning Down the House written by Jane Mendelsohn and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2017-02-21 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It begins with two girls: Neva, from the Caucasus, sold into the sex trade; and Poppy, the adopted daughter of a wealthy New York real estate family, the Zanes. As their paths cross and their fates intertwine in an exquisite high drama that blurs the lines between realism and myth, we travel with them from lavish weddings to the transglobal underworld; from London and New York to Laos and Istanbul; and we watch as the mighty Zane dynasty slips from greatness. Mendelsohn captures the emotional worlds of these characters with visceral immediacy, and transforms their private narratives into a larger story about the forces of globalization, human trafficking, and sexual violence. Gripping and psychologically acute, Burning Down the House is an extraordinary family saga that limns the inescapable connections between the personal and the political.

Book An Index to African American Spirituals for the Solo Voice

Download or read book An Index to African American Spirituals for the Solo Voice written by Kathleen A. Abromeit and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-01-30 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spirituals were an intrinsic part of the African-American plantation life and were sung at all important occasions and events. This volume is the first index of African-American spirituals to be published in more than half a century and will be an important research tool for scholars and students of African-American history and music. The first collection of slave songs appeared in 1843, without musical notation, in a series of three articles by a Methodist Church missionary identified simply as c. Collections that included musical notation began appearing in the 1850s. The earliest book-length collection of spirituals containing both lyrics and music was published in 1867 and entitled Slave Songs of the United States. Not since the 1930s, with the publication of the Index to Negro Spirituals by the Cleveland Public Library, has an index of spirituals been compiled. The spirituals are neatly organized in four indexes: a title index, first line index, alternate title index and a topical index that includes twenty major categories. A bibliography of indexed sources serves as a guide for further research.

Book We Won t Back Down

Download or read book We Won t Back Down written by Jos? Angel Guti?rrez and published by Arte Publico Press. This book was released on 2005-11-30 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On December 9, 1969, change was in the air. The small town of Crystal City, Texas would never be the same. After weeks of petitioning for a hearing with the Crystal City school board, students of Crystal City High and their parents descended on the superintendent's office. The students had been threatened with suspension and even physical violence. Powerful members of the community had insisted they would fire the parents of students if they went in front of the school board, and still, they came. Finally, the school board removed the chairs in the gallery, and the parents and students stood until members of the school board fled to avoid the confrontation. As the students and their parents stood in front of the building, a cry rose from the crowd. "Walk out. Walk out." So began the Crystal City High student walk out. At the center of the fervor was Severita Lara. Called la cabezuda, or stubborn girl, by her mother, Lara bore the mark of a leader from an early age. She was not afraid to stand up to anyone: girls or boys, teachers or superintendents. She always followed her father's advice, "If you know it's right, do it." José Angel Gutiérrez, the famous civil rights leader, chronicle's Lara's ascent from a willful child to the mayor of Crystal City. From her father's doting support to her mother's steel-rod discipline, Gutiérrez offers a detailed portrait of the early family life of the woman whose continuing struggle against segregation and discrimination began while she was still a high school student in Crystal City. He also follows her attempts as a single mother to achieve her dream of being a doctor and providing for her sons. This is the story of la cabezuda, Severita Lara, who has made an indelible imprint on American history. JOSÉ ANGEL GUTIÉRREZ is the author of a memoir for young adults The Making of a Civil Rights Leader: José Angel Gutiérrez (Piñata Books, 2005); two works of social commentary, A Chicano Manual on How to Handle Gringos (Arte Público Press, 2003) and A Gringo Manual on How to Handle Mexicans (Arte Público Press, 1998); and a memoir for adults, The Making of a Chicano Militant (University of Wisconsin Press, 1998). He is the editor and translator of Reies López Tijerina's autobiography, They Called Me King Tiger (Arte Público Press, 2000). The founder and former director of the Center for Mexican American Studies at the University of Texas at Arlington, he is a professor of Political Science at the University of Texas at Arlington. He also practices law in Dallas, Texas, where he lives with his family.
