I launched my project Knit India Through Literature in 1992 and started work in full swing around the middle of 1993 – with the belief that to research each of the 15 official languages recognized by the Indian Constitution (it is another matter that later on it increased to 18 within a single year) and to travel across the country to meet and interview the respective writers, it would take me a year per volume. Add another year for going to print, proof reading and the like, throw in an additional year just in case - you still have only six! This was how I calculated things would pan out when I started work in 1993 but the subsequent events proved my arithmetic way off mark, with the tally at sixteen years finally! This volume on the north Indian languages includes Hindi, Kashmiri, Punjabi, Urdu and also Sanskrit. The reason why I have included Sanskrit in this volume is that for centuries, Sanskrit ruled the roost in the Kashmir Valley more than in any other part of the country. The practice of writing a travelogue that offers detailed and interesting information on the state, before venturing into the interviews with the writers of a particular language, continues in this volume too. I travelled widely in the Hindi belt of north India, across the eight states of Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand that have Hindi as their official language, and am glad that I have been able to offer the readers a glimpse into the north India that I was introduced to! I wish to offer these four volumes - South, East, West and North of the Knit India Through Literature project, lovingly put together over the last sixteen years, as ornaments to adorn Mother India. I sincerely believe that they will add to her beauty and charm and serve to enhance her greatness. Thank You!

Book excerpt: Dwelling in the Archives uses the writing of three 20th century Indian women to interrogate the status of the traditional archive, reading their memoirs, fictions, and histories as counter-narratives of colonial modernity. Janaki Majumdar was the daughter of the first president of the Indian National Congress. Her unpublished "Family History" (1935) stages the story of her parents' transnational marriage as a series of homes the family inhabited in Britain and India -- thereby providing a heretofore unavailable narrative of the domestic face of 19th century Indian nationalism. Cornelia Sorabji was one of the first Indian women to qualify for the bar. Her memoirs (1934 and 1936) demonstrate her determination to rescue the zenana (women's quarters) and purdahashin (secluded women) from the recesses of the orthodox home in order to counter the emancipationist claims of Gandhian nationalism. Last but not least, Attia Hosain's 1961 novel, "Sunlight on Broken Column" represents the violence and trauma of partition through the biography of a young heroine called Laila and her family home. Taken together, their writings raise questions about what counts as an archive, offering us new insights into the relationship of women to memory and history, gender to fact and fiction, and feminism to nationalism and postcolonialism.

In a structured narrative, it focuses on the political processes inside India, events and circumstances in South Asia and the debates and literary movements in Europe and the United States to demonstrate how the literary project was specifically informed by literary-political movements. It explores the theorisation of literature and politics that informed progressive writing and argues that the progressive conception of literature, art and politics was closer to the theorisation of two thinkers of whom the writers themselves knew very little – Leon Trotsky and Antonio Gramsci. The book charts the progressive movement’s extension into the cultural arena through the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) and the deepening of its nation-wide character through a progressive nationalism instilled with left-wing ideology. One of the important aims of the AIPWA project was to advance the development of a popular vernacular based on the demotic language of north India – Hindustani. The book locates this issue within the broader nationalist discussion on the national language. Contrary to what is implied by much of the previous scholarship, the book argues that the progressive movement did survive the ravages of partition and that the progressives maintained organisations in both India and Pakistan. It looks at the short-lived but very colourful history of the PWA in Pakistan, using PWA documents, government records and personal testimonies. Arguing that literary output and cultural production cannot be understood, let alone interpreted, outside the context of the nationalist movement, war, independence and partition, the book presents a narrative that necessarily transcends disciplinary boundaries between literature, politics and history. Book excerpt: The displacement of the Egyptian Nubians from their ancient lands and their resettlement deeper in the land of Egypt in 1964 had an impact on Nubian culture and the Nubian language. Contemporary Egyptian Nubian consists of two dialects, Fadicca and Matoki. After the resettlement of Nubians, the interactions between speakers of the two Nubian dialects and speakers of Arabic increased. Nubian, an East Sudanic language, came into contact with a dominant Semitic language, Arabic. How has this increased contact affected the Nubian language in Egypt? The aim of this work is to examine from the perspective of a 'language-contact situation' the impact of the resettlement on the future of the Nubian language. The comparative data on the Nubian situation will add an important contribution to our fund of knowledge on processes of language contact. This is the first sociolinguistic study of the Nubian language from such a perspective.
