Book excerpt: The essays in this collection address questions raised by a modernity that has become global with the victory of capitalism over its competitors in the late twentieth century. Rather than erase difference by converting all to European-American norms of modernity, capitalist modernity as it has gone global has empowered societies once condemned to imprisonment in premodernity or tradition to make their own claims on modernity, on the basis of those very traditions, as filtered through experiences of colonialism, neocolonialism, or simple marginalization by the forces of globalization. Global modernity appears presently not as global homogeneity, but as a site of conflict between forces of homogenization and heterogenization within and between nations. Prominent in this context are conflicts over different ways of knowing and organizing the world. The essays here, dealing for the most part with education in the United States, engage in critiques of hegemonic ways of knowing and critically evaluate counterhegemonic voices for change that are heard from a broad spectrum of social, ethnic, and indigenous perspectives. Crucial to the essays' critique of hegemony in contemporary pedagogy is an effort shared by the contributors, distinguished scholars in their various fields, to overcome area and/or disciplinary boundaries and take the wholeness of everyday life as their point of departure.

Book excerpt: Bapu's betrothal with Ba took place when Bapu was only six and Ba seven. The actual marriage came off when he was thirteen years of age. Thus, they lived a long married life of sixty-two years. This means that Ba alone of all persons had the unique opportunity to see and understand Bapu's life in all its completeness - both at its weakest and strongest. She was a close witness of Bapu's spiritual progress from overindulgence in sensual pleasure to perfect brahmacharya. When he made a resolve to observe brahmacharya she readily accepted it as her own. Her noblest virtue, to quote Bapu's words, was this that 'she was never the temptress.' Thus, as his partner in the performance of life's duty Ba played the role of a real helpmate in the making of Bapu's life. She never came in the way of Bapu's efforts for his spiritual progress. Writing about it in his Autobiography Bapu says: “Willingly or unwillingly, consciously or unconsciously, she has considered herself blessed in following in my foot-steps and has never stood in the way of my endeavour to lead a life of restraint.” —From the Book

Clothes have been used to assert power, challenge authority, and instigate social change throughout Indian society. During the struggle for independence, members of the Indian elite incorporated elements of Western style into their clothes, while Gandhi's adoption of the loincloth symbolized the rejection of European power and the contrast between Indian poverty and British wealth. Similar tensions are played out today, with urban Indians adopting "ethnic" dress as villagers seek modern fashions. Negotiated through a telling of Hindu religious stories, the mediated voice of Morari Bapu, a former school-teacher turned narrator, is a major medium of performance transposed into multiple media such as theatre, stage, music and spectacle. The book engages with voice as a vehicle of meaning to scrutinize its discursive production, imagination and re-production across mobile contexts. It investigates how the transnationally disseminated practices re-contextualize religious subjectivities of an affective community enmeshed in spatio-sensorial modes.
