Book Incident Management in Intelligent Transportation Systems

Download or read book Incident Management in Intelligent Transportation Systems written by Kaan Özbay and published by Artech House Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective incident detection, response, clearance, and recovery from vehicle disablements and accidents can save countless commuter hours, gallons of fuel, and thousands of dollars. In this book, the authors describe an integrated traffic incident management system and related software designed to facilitate interagency communication and help transportation officials coordinate response activities so that traffic flow is restored to normal as soon as possible.

Book Assessing the Benefits and Costs of ITS

Download or read book Assessing the Benefits and Costs of ITS written by David Gillen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 17 chapters in this book, which evolved from a conference on measuring the contributions of ITS sponsored by the California Department of Transportation in February 2002, examine the costs and benefits of ITS in an economic and business policy context. Section 1 examines the broad theme of how and what ITS contributes to the economy and how one makes a business case for ITS. Section 2 includes three chapters on ITS applications in mass transit. Section 3 explores ITS applications in the automobile/highway system. Section 4 considers integrative issues including how ITS is perceived and how it can be positioned to improve surface transportation. This volume will be especially useful to researchers and policy makers working in transportation, transportation engineering, and the economic analysis of transportation systems.

Book Alternative Approaches to Condition Monitoring in Freeway Management Systems

Download or read book Alternative Approaches to Condition Monitoring in Freeway Management Systems written by Rod E. Turochy and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to growing concerns over traffic congestion, traffic management systems have been built in large urban areas in an effort to improve the efficiency and safety of the transportation network. This research effort developed an automated condition monitoring method that uses archived traffic data to provide a basis for assessing current traffic conditions and, if applicable, determining the degree to which the conditions are abnormal. The method is an improvement over commonly used traffic condition monitoring methods in that the system state is characterized across a range of conditions rather than in an incident or incident-free condition. An additional improvement is that the interrelationships among traffic parameters are exploited by using multivariate statistical quality control (MSQC) rather than analyzing values of mean speed, volume, and occupancy (traffic variables typically measured in a traffic management system) independently. This statistical approach provides the tools and basis for the extensions needed to assess current traffic conditions using historical data. Prototype applications for use in traffic management systems and for data mining purposes were developed. These applications employ a newly developed procedure for screening both current and archived data from traffic detectors to reduce the potential of using erroneous data in the MSQC-based traffic condition monitoring method. Several strategies for sampling the historical database, based on temporal relationships with current data, were developed and evaluated. Implementation of the method will allow traffic managers to focus their efforts on abnormally operating locations and then determine an appropriate course of action to attempt to return the system state to normal. Potential benefits include more efficient use of human and computer resources in traffic management centers, improved return on investment in traffic detection infrastructure, and reduced traffic congestion.

Book Traffic Control Systems Handbook

Download or read book Traffic Control Systems Handbook written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This "Traffic Control Systems Handbook" updates the 1985 edition (FHWA-IP-85-11; TRIS 00475445) and broadens the scope to include Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technology and concepts. The Handbook recommends decision-making processes in selection, implementation and operations of a traffic control system and describes ITS plans and programs. The "Traffic Control Systems Handbook": serves as a basic reference in planning, designing and implementing effective traffic control systems; provides an updated compendium of existing traffic control technology for the advanced designer and user; describes existing and evolving traffic control system technology; and aids understanding and facilitates training in the traffic control system field.

Book Vehicle Location and Navigation Systems

Download or read book Vehicle Location and Navigation Systems written by Yilin Zhao and published by Artech House Publishers. This book was released on 1997 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to provide, in a single source, the detailed interdisciplinary information needed to understand, design and implement advanced Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS, formerly IVHS). It presents state-of-the-art principles and practices that you can apply to a wide range of vehicle location and navigation systems -- placing special emphasis on the vehicle side of the system -- and synthesizes information scattered among many different engineering fields.
