Book Andy Varipapa s Quick Way to Better Bowling

Download or read book Andy Varipapa s Quick Way to Better Bowling written by Andy Varipapa and published by . This book was released on 2015-04-17 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andy Varipapa won virtually every major bowling championship. He is remembered today for his youtube video, showing his fantastic, almost unbelievable bowling trick shots. To see it, search youtube for "Bowling Tricks with Andy Varipapa (1948)." His advice to the nation's 18 million amateur bowlers: The approach is the most important thing, four even steps with no sudden stop when the ball is released (though he himself, an exception to his own rules, takes five); the arm should swing up as if the bowler were throwing it up to shake hands with someone; the eyes should not be on the pins but on a point at the foul line where the ball will first touch. But there is one thing more: "Varipapa is rhythmical . . . that's why he's the greatest." Andy Varipapa was considered to be "the greatest one-man bowling show on Earth." He would perform fantastic trick shots, sometimes rolling two bowling balls at once that would collide together and then hit the ten pens. Sometimes the balls would hit each other, then hit the gutters and then bounce back and hit the pins. Andy was more comfortable rolling two balls at once then most people are rolling one. Varipapa said, "I can make a bowling ball do anything, but talk." In 1934 he made "Strikes and Spares" the first of his 26 movie shorts. In 1981, at the age of 89 Andy appeared on the TV show "That's Incredible" demonstrating his trick shots.

Book Andy Varipapa

Download or read book Andy Varipapa written by Glenn Gerstner and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-04-19 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Italy in 1891, Andy Varipapa immigrated to the United States in 1903, uneducated and unable to speak English. Equipped with little more than athletic ability, the will to succeed, and a healthy dose of self-confidence, he became bowling's first superstar. In the 1940s and 1950s, Varipapa was the world's most famous bowler. For more than 50 years, he dazzled fans with an array of never-before-seen trick shots in person, on movie screens, and on television. Varipapa was not only a performer but one of the greatest bowlers ever. He won the prestigious BPAA All-Star tournament in 1946, silencing critics who claimed he was just an entertainer. And he did so at age 55, long past most bowlers' retirement age. To prove it was no fluke, he repeated in 1947. Bowling fans recognized the outspoken and brash "Great Varipapa," who once said, "I'm the most skillful, talkative, and controversial bowler who ever lived." Few knew Andy, the kind and loyal family man and friend. Sourced from interviews with family and friends and more than 1,000 secondary sources, this first-ever biography of Varipapa tells the personal story of bowling's greatest showman and one of its most influential figures.

Book Historical Dictionary of Bowling

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Bowling written by John Grasso and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-08-07 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loggats, kayles, quilles, skittles, half-bowl and ninepins were all early forms of games in which the goal was to knock down small standing objects from a distance by rolling or throwing another object at them. Archaeologists have found items from Egypt around 5200 B.C. that included small stone balls and narrow pins that were possibly used for a game. Additional research has disclosed that Polynesians played a similar game, using small elliptical balls and round flat stone disks, and, like modern-day bowling, a sixty-foot throwing distance. The Historical Dictionary of Bowling contains a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 500 cross-referenced entries on both male and female bowlers, amateur and professional, bowling coaches, writers and other contributors to the sport of bowling; descriptions and results of major tournaments and terminology of the sport. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the sport of Bowling.

Book Encyclopedia of American Short Films 1926 1959

Download or read book Encyclopedia of American Short Films 1926 1959 written by Graham Webb and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-07-10 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short subject films have a long history in American cinemas. These could be anywhere from 2 to 40 minutes long and were used as a "filler" in a picture show that would include a cartoon, a newsreel, possibly a serial and a short before launching into the feature film. Shorts could tackle any topic of interest: an unusual travelogue, a comedy, musical revues, sports, nature or popular vaudeville acts. With the advent of sound-on-film in the mid-to-late 1920s, makers of earlier silent short subjects began experimenting with the short films, using them as a testing ground for the use of sound in feature movies. After the Second World War, and the rising popularity of television, short subject films became far too expensive to produce and they had mostly disappeared from the screens by the late 1950s. This encyclopedia offers comprehensive listings of American short subject films from the 1920s through the 1950s.

Book excerpt: This ten-volume encyclopedia explores the social history of 20th-century America in rich, authoritative detail, decade by decade, through the eyes of its everyday citizens. Social History of the United States is a cornerstone reference that tells the story of 20th-century America, examining the interplay of policies, events, and everyday life in each decade of the 1900s with unmatched authority, clarity, and insight. Spanning ten volumes and featuring the work of some of the foremost social historians working today, Social History of the United States bridges the gap between 20th-century history as it played out on the grand stage and history as it affected—and was affected by—citizens at the grassroots level. Covering each decade in a separate volume, this exhaustive work draws on the most compelling scholarship to identify important themes and institutions, explore daily life and working conditions across the economic spectrum, and examine all aspects of the American experience from a citizen's-eye view. Casting the spotlight on those whom history often leaves in the dark, Social History of the United States is an essential addition to any library collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first comprehensive introduction to Results Mapping, an in novative approach for assessing the worth of hard-to-evaluate social, health, and education programs. Results Mapping represents a true milestone in program evaluation-a milestone both as methodology for program accountability and as a technique for program improvement. It is relevant across a wide spectrum of pub lic health, social service, and systems-building initiatives. It introduces "new sci ence" into the field of program evaluation. It merges common sense with structured logic. It retains the richness of real world success stories without sacri ficing a hard-nosed focus on quantitative data and measurable outcomes. The contents of this book are directly pertinent for program leadership and staff, for sponsors and funders in the public and private sectors, and for those charged with assessing, documenting and analyzing the effects of program activ ity. Success Stories as Hard Data is designed to be readable, practical, and clear. Its author does not ignore previous scholarly work, but chooses to emphasize real world applications. For this Dr. Kibei is to be applauded.
